Disneyland with family of 6 - hotel recommendations? AFV Club?

I am starting to plan a fall trip to Disneyland. It will be me and DH, 18yo son, 13yo daughter, 6yo daughter, and 6yo son. Last time we went to DL was 1996, for DS1's 3rd birthday. We've been to WDW several times.

Anyway, I'd love to hear your favorite hotel recommendations for a family of our size. We stayed in a family suite at All Star Music last time we went to WDW and loved it, so something along those lines (although real beds for the big kids at least would be nice) would work. Has anyone ever gotten a condo through the Armed Forces Vacation Club in the DL area?

We are also a family of 6 and finding rooms (without spending a fortune is difficult). We found that the Anaheim Plaza http://www.anaheimplazahotel.com/ works great for us. They have a "family suite" which is basically 2 rooms with 4 queens and 2 bathrooms. Right now they run about $100 and during the summer about $160. And it is well within walking distance to the parks.

Not sure about the AFVC in the area, although we are military as well. Just haven't heard about it. Hopefully a military DIS'er can help you out there.

Also look at Desert Inn and Suites. Its right across the street from DL and has several suite configurations for a reasonable rate.

Hi! I'm a military DISer (well, my hubby does the work and I just reap the benefits lol).

I wasn't familiar with AFVC so I went to their site and did some research. It looks like their properties in Anaheim (search the Los Angeles Area) are VERY limited (only two showed up) and the rates are more expensive than I've found at closer places with no discounts at all!

Check your local MWR/Recreation office on base and see, first of all, if they offer discount hotels in Anaheim. Ours does, but we are located in San Diego, so I'm not sure if the WA office would as well. Second, there are a number of hotels on Harbor that offer military discounts. Just call around to places you're looking into and ask. It's usually the same as the AAA discount, but they don't offer multiple discounts so it's usually one or the other. The on-site properties also offer military discounts, but I find them to still be quite expensive. I don't know your budget, however, so you might want to look into them if you'd like to "splurge".

If you want to stay on property, you can look into renting points from a DVC member to get a 1 bedroom villa at the GCH. Otherwise, you'll need 2 rooms anywhere on site.

There are lots of options for larger families on harbour. Just depends on what you're looking for.

You could stay in a Disney Suite! The 6 of us stayed a couple of times at the RI Maingate in a Penthouse suite. Suited our needs perfectly.

The Marriott offers fabulous military discounts. There are two Residence Inns in the area. The one on Clementine would be an ok walk for the teens but probably too far for the six year olds. The RI on Harbor is too far to walk but you shouldn't have an ART problem in the fall, unless you're going near Halloween. Both also offer complementary hot breakfast buffets every day and a light dinner Mon-Thurs evenings. Great for teens!

We go to Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites. The hotel is right across the street from the DL entrance. There are many restaurants nearby...McDonalds, Denny's, Ihop, Coldstone Creamery, etc.
