Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

Hoping they open up in January now for my Grandson's birthday. With Newsom's announcement I am giving up hope for this year and also giving up hope that any NFL team in California will be allowed to bring in fans. I work at Levi Stadium and its been devastating to the workers their and every arena and stadium in the area. Most workers at those places work all the events.

Well as Pete always said Chapek as wanted a reason to downsize for awhile.

I personally am not against a ticket hike, with less people in the park. I have always been for that!

It is what it is. I don't think Gavin has some nefarious political 'agenda' and I don't think Disney's a greedy corporation with no regard for its employees or public health. I think they're just people who are trying to do what they feel is best for the business and/or the people they're responsible for. Unfortunately at this point there seems to be no 'place in the middle' at which they can meet. I'm not going to stand in judgement because no one really knows the specific 'sticking point'. We all speculate, but we don't know.

OK, I will say I give the 'side eye' to Disney's top brass' total remunerations packages vs the layoffs. Their actual 'salaries' are just a tiny portion of the total income they receive. But I've been a bit 🤨 at corporate packages long before the pandemic.

... If Disney decides to sue then maybe it will force change so people can get back to work permanently. Not to mention all the non-Disney businesses that are suffering, especially in Anaheim, the hotels and restaurants, etc. Everyone is losing with this extended closure.

This whole thing is really leaving a bad taste in my mouth. In general, I thought Newsom's response has been good, but lately he seems to have shifted the focus from trying to reopen things with minimizing virus spread to eliminating virus spread before re-opening. He's not alone. I live in Alameda county and we still don't have indoor dining even though we moved to red a couple weeks ago.

I was pessimistic at the outset about the opening time frame for Disneyland--I think I initially picked late October way back--but the latest comments by Newsom are extremely disheartening. I agree that it sounds as if he's not contemplating allowing theme parks to open until COVID is under control with either a vaccine or therapeutic. Given that every other Disney park has managed to re-open during COVID, I think this is an unreasonable standard, and if I were Disney, I'd be looking at ways to open anyway and/or contemplating litigation. I'd bet Disney legal is hard at work doing exactly that.

Absolutely right. If Disney throws the CMs the money they’ll use to litigate this, then what? The CMs are still furloughed until the parks open. This money is just going to pay for insurance and benefits for what... a month more? When they can use the same money to get these people back to work, paying for benefits and income permanently.

I will agree, restoring the executive suite salary while firing nearly 30k employees is a bitter taste; however, we also need to understand that operations right now don’t warrant a need for that many cast members either, given the unprecedented shift in business due to the pandemic. The hundreds of imagineers and the live performers that were let go.... its hurts. It just makes me think that’s a shift in Disney magic. BUUUUT rationally thinking, if Disney is no longer investing as much in new projects due to the decimating economic effect it has had on them, then that’s why imagineers go. If the current situation calls for no live performances (or less so) to avoid congregating As much, then those performers get let go. If operations, buffets, and hotels are reduced, then it makes sense to cut staff there.

It’s hurtful to see. But they are a business 🙁 and they kept everyone on furlough for 7 months to allow the CMs to still have benefits while looking for other things. My sister is one of those affected, so this is definitely not a good situation for us. But you can see the perspective this company comes from.

We are in Alameda County also. We seem to be very slow moving with opening.

Just popping in as we are supposed to go to San Diego for Christmas (we live in NY so fingers crossed we can even get there), and DH & I were SO excited to try to get to Disneyland as we've never been. I was so convinced the parks would be open by Christmas, especially after following the progress at WDW, and it's so disheartening to see this complete lack of progress. DH still wants to get to DTD for an evening, and I'm sure we will, but it'll be so frustrating to be so close to the parks and only be able to basically wave from outside the gates.

Speaking as a former WDW CM myself, I feel for those CMs that just want to work. I absolutely would not have been able to remain independently living in Florida if this had happened when I was working. Many CMs live entirely paycheck to paycheck. Honestly, when this all started, I was firmly in the camp of shutting everything down until this virus was under control. As time passes, however, I realize that pandemic or not, there are still bills to pay and mouths to feed. There has to be some sort of balance here and it's unfortunate that there isn't even any hint of a compromise in California.

I simply don't buy the claim that California has a "health-first" response. A health first response would prioritize keeping schools open for in-person learning before pretty much every other sector, since access to education is one of the single most impactful social determinants of health. A health-first and DATA-DRIVEN response would not shut down outdoor parks, playgrounds, national and state parks, &c., driving people indoors where the virus spreads much more easily.

NOTE: This is not a dig specifically at California or Newson, since all states that have imposed restrictive lockdowns have pretty much followed this pattern. But it's not a health-first response, it is an optics-driven response.

We are supposed to go on Dec 1st. We’ve been going to DL at every year at Christmas time for 15 years and thought briefly about switching to WDW instead. But it would be too much of hassle with changing everything, plus we are also in limbo on a Jan 25th Disney Dream cruise. My OCD planning brain could not take all of that, lol.

So we are keeping our plans, at least until our PIF deadline (Nov 1st). It seems unlikely but I would kick myself if we canceled right now and (by some miracle) it opens.

Re-posting DIS Guideline #5 as a reminder for everyone posting here and on this board in general. Please keep this in mind when posting in this thread, on the DLR boards, and on other DIS boards:
5. POLITICS/RELIGION
Because of the large number of complaints of personal attacks related to these subjects and inability for many people to keep a civilized conversation when discussing these hot-button topics, politics and religion will no longer be appropriate topics on our forums. Political or religion based posts or threads will be removed, and repeated violations of this rule can result in an infraction.

This doesn't mean that political news or facts can never be mentioned here. Clearly, these things have been posted throughout the 300+ pages of this superthread. But please remember that there is a big difference between posting these facts and news updates vs. venting/ranting/disparaging/preaching/insulting/trolling/etc. with this same information. Just about everyone here understands the frustration and the anger. There is no need to lash out or dump on anyone. It is possible to show respect when we disagree with people, both with people here and people in the news. A little grace can go a long way toward saving sanity.

Now, let's get back to the game!

Ok Disney: DLR food festival -- let's get the party on. Everything but the rides and get some folk back to work and see what we can do to support the local economy. Knott's and Seaworld doing it already. Legoland has some modified version. Our zoos are doing okay.

There's a lot of entertainment and value that DLR offers beyond just the rides and get the Imagineers back into reimagine outdoor activities via AR like they've done in the past with passport at Epcot.

Steal shamelessly from Universal's magic wand from HP world. So much possible as our Gov has dug his heels in for the long haul; so let's get out of that mode and Imagine..... I have my wallet ready :)
