Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

Up until this week (even almost til today's interview), my thoughts were "This will resolve itself shortly, it will work out." After listening to the press conference, if Disney wants to sue, I'm behind them.
I said this a few weeks ago, but Disney should've sued as soon as the new reopening blueprint was released and didn't include theme parks.

I wasn't really worried about DLR before, but I kind of am now. Expecting 1 case/100k people (isn't that yellow?) is something that might never happen...especially if as many people decline vaccinations as polls seem to indicate. Newsom's statement is a little bit frightening in that he's willing to accept a dead halt on a city's economy for an indefinite period of time, when there isn't really data to support that theme parks reopening causes outbreaks.

Right now I don't think there is enough pressure for Newsom to change his stance. He does have some valid concerns with spikes occurring in other areas of the world. However, at some point the economic issues need to be addressed. We can't continue down this path forever. Eventually the economic bill will come due.
Honestly, I think the unions themselves are going to have to stop going after Disney as the employer and start going after Newsom. Unions have huge power and political sway. They may get some movement.
However I doubt it.
Honestly, it's all so complicated. I want Disney to open. I'm comfortable with the idea of Disney open. But is that the right call or not. Who knows?
Is there anyway for the federal government (either Trump’s or Biden’s) to withhold funds until something moves forward with this?

I am not a real political person so I don’t know if the federal government would even get involved with state problems like this but they might if they see enough people on unemployment because the state won’t allow certain economic sectors to open??

Could either Trump or Biden (if this gets into the new year) request a sit down between all parties?

So at this point I think Disney's response will be more layoffs and cancellations. I do think they will sue, but with the way this is going, it doesn't look good. We though about switching to WDW but for the same price we would only get 4 days... not really the same experience there.

Thank you. That's a bummer. My credit will run out in January. I think my airline tickets may be toast. :(
Double check your expiration dates. When covid started, Southwest changed the expiration dates on many tickets to 2022. The flight had to be booked and/or scheduled within a certain window, but if it was, then the expiration date extension was granted automatically. There is a look-up tool on Southwest's website.

No, the federal government isn't going to get involved in a dispute between Disneyland and California. At this point, Disneyland has three options: (1) wait; (2) drum up additional pressure, possibly by trying to convince the union to get involved, and hope it works better than the last two times they tried this; or (3) sue. We have to remember that although Disneyland being open or closed is VERY important to those on this board, it is not very important to most of the population. In fact, I'd venture to guess that if you took a survey, at least a plurality and probably a majority would support theme parks' continued closure.

I know that we all believe Disneyland reopening is also important to the people who work there; but if that is the case, it is interesting that the unions have been absolutely, radio silent on this. I agree with the poster who said unions have greater political power and may be able to move Newsom if they/their members want to. But they aren't. Why?

At this point, absent a court order or significant union-driven political pressure, I'm predicting a DL opening in 2021, likely between April and June, after flu season and no less than 2 months of stable numbers, whether those numbers are "yellow" or "orange".

I was sure they would open for the holidays but the "no hurry" and "we're going to be stubborn about it" lines make me think my wife's 2021 prediction is going to be right. Ugh. I really didn't want to go to WDW before their 50th but I think I may have to plan that out.

As sad as this post is, I think you're probably right.

I can't even begin to comprehend that DLR could possibly be closed for an entire year. That hurts deep down. It's just crazy and wrong!😪

I remember really early on, Newsom said that the NFL would not be playing in California in 2021. That was like in April maybe. I thought even then, that theme parks weren't opening so long as the NFL wasn't playing. Now of course the NFL found a way to play, kind of, but with no fans, whereas Disney can't function without "fans".

I’m still going to wait until Disney sends out the cancelation email for my 10/25-10/31 dates. We’ll see how far they cancel with tomorrow’s weekly email.

I’m wondering if we see a lawsuit brought on by CAPA soon.

Since I don’t live in California, I also want to do some research and see if any of the unions publicly endorsed Newsom for governor and maybe that is why they have been quiet. Maybe they picked him and now they are stuck with the policies that have been decided. But on the other hand, you would think that if they endorsed him that they would be in his ear trying to move things forward. Maybe it is falling on deaf ears?? Who knows at this point?

Anybody know how long it has take WDTC to process refunds for vacation packages? I booked mostly with gift cards so I will need to wait until those are refunded until we make any plans for WDW.

I am having a full on hissy fit over not being able to go to Disneyland.

So I moved to California—15 mins from DL—during this mess in March. I bought my first AP 2 weeks before they cut off purchases of any new passes and tickets. Prior to this, I had visited DL once as I was a WDW gal, having lived on the east coast. I moved here with the parks in mind.

7 months later I can see the good Lord both laughing at me and patting me on the back😂 both for the parks and the mess of a state I now call home LOL
