Hi! I'm thinking about going to Disneyland this summer. I might also visit Universal Studios, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Sea World and maybe more. What I know is, I will be travelling alone, by air and will NOT be renting a car. It will be during this July, but when doesn't matter much. I'd like to stay in the cheapest hotel/youth hostel possible, but I would like to be able to stay at Disneyland Resort until it closes (concerning transportation). Do you have any suggestions? It's my first visit and haven't got a clue where to stay and how transportation works over there. Thanks a lot!

Well first off- Hotel rates around DL are quite high for most of the month- For mid July the cheapest Ive found is 65 a night- The farther you go away the cheaper it would be but then transportation becomes an issue-

Transportation to all of those would be pretty hard without a car- From DL- the Zoo and Sea World are about an hour south- and Universal Studios is an hour north- There are usually tours that go to those places from some hotels but you'll have to search them out and I know they are a bit pricey.

You can take an LAX airport bus such as the SuperShuttle (blue vans) to the Disneyland area hotels for about $16 (last I heard). As for cheap hotels in within walking distance, the lowest in the AAA guide is Abby's Anaheimer Inn, which is listed as $59-$69 for that time of year. It's a one star motel, but it is very close, adjacent to the DL Resort property on the southwest side (Katella and Walnut).

As for Universal Studios, you can take the OCTA #50 bus eastbound on Katella to the Anaheim Amtrak station, and then take Amtrak or Metrolink trains into LA Union Station, then transfer to the MTA Red Line subway to the Universal City station. http://www.mta.net/riding_metro/metro_rail/red_line.htm

Similarly for San Diego, take Amtrak southbound, but I'm not sure what options you have for getting to the Zoo or SeaWorld from the SD Amtrak station.

If you don't already know about it you should look into the City Pass. Mary has info about it on www.mousesavers.com

You can stay walking distance from DL but other places will require a car I think... you can get to San Deigo via Amtrack for pretty cheap but California is really not set up for travel without a car.
