Hi everyone, I am planning on proposing to my future wife to be in about a month at Disneyland and was hoping I could get some advice.

I have looked all over the internet and got a few contacts from the Disney website and Fairy Tale Weddings website to help set up something special. I received an email back with a list of possible ideas. Aside from a few little things they could set up, most of the ideas were more or less just places in the park to ask not actual things they can set up to make it extra special and unique. I called the number that they gave me to contact them if I had any other questions but I was a little disappointing when they told me that all my ideas are not possible because they interfere with regular park operations.

I have seen all these videos of such amazing proposals and I was really hoping to do something similar, maybe not as over the top as some of the videos but I want to do something amazing that she will never forget and will make her so happy.

Any Ideas?

Just off the top of my head....get a Photopass, then ask one of the photographers to take your picture together, then when he gets ready to take the pic, drop down on one knee and propose. You will have a picture of the moment.
I am sure others will have better ideas.

Maybe hand it to the photographer with a small note that says "I'm going to propose" so that they're prepared.

Several Disney photographers use Nikon D90's. I have the same camera. See if the photographer will change the shutter speed to the fastest option, 4 frames a second. This way you'll get lots of shots fast of your proposal and reaction. I use this camera feature when shooting my grandson's football games.

Good luck

Maybe you can do that photopass proposal by her favorite character?
Just a guess, but I'll bet that characters are not allowed to participate in something like that. I have seen photographers take pictures of proposals in front of the castle, though.

They're not allowed to change the settings on the camera once it's checked out.

You could do a sit down meal or Character meal and some how slip a ring on top of a cupcake or dessert and then ask her.. ?

Thank you for all the great advice I will definitely get photos of it and hopefully video too. I like the idea of getting a character involved and also though sequence photos of it happening. I was hoping to do something a little more though, like in this video link below. They got the cast members in on it. I would hope to have something original though not exactly what they do in the video. Any thing similar to this would make her so happy and would be amazing. Anybody know how to set up something like this, or do you think you have to know someone who works there?

We were sitting at the Dessert Counter at Napa Rose and the dessert chef and manager were making a dessert with an engagement ring in the middle. They presented the dessert to their table after the meal and that is how he proposed. Though that was kinda cool.

Pretty much need to know someone for the real inside stuff. They get a lot of this stuff everyday.

What were your original ideas that they couldn't do?

Characters are not allowed to participate in proposals and will have to turn their back if you try to do it in front of them. They can be there to take pictures after. (Because many of the characters have permanent smiles and DIsney does not take the risk she will say no and there is a pic of Mickey with a giant smile. It is company policy).

As far as the Splash Mountain photo, again, you are risking that you won't be able to use it. Guests are not allowed to have objects in hand during rides due to safet regulations, even papers which could fly out and cover a sensor shutting down the ride. CMs are supposed to delete any photos of guests violating policies so it is a possibility that depending on who works the photo counter your photo would be deleted.

Most restaurants will cooperate with a proposal. When I worked Fantasyland Attractions, we did the blocking off for the fireworks. One night we let a man go up in front of the castle after we blocked it off (but when it was still safe) and propose. IT was great because it was just the two of them and made for a great pic, plus everybody could see it. There are no guarantees though so you would need to have a back up plan.

07RobinHood,

First off, this is very exciting, and I know everyone here is wishing you a magical day when this happens! I see you have been searching the web, looking at what others have done. There are so many great places and times to pop the big question at Disneyland… on the Mark Twain, at the carousel, while getting a sketch made of the two of you (I’m sure you’ve seen this). I like what SMD said, "Maybe hand it to the photographer with a small note that says "I'm going to propose" so that they're prepared.” You KNOW they would love to help you out and capture the moment.

I proposed to my Princess 17 years ago this past January 24th. I had that ring box in my pocket all day. I planned to ask, kneeling in front of the castle at dusk, on the compass rose. So about that time I worked our way over, and just as we were getting close, here came the marching band! (My wife loves to tell this story) So… I had to stall, while they played. As soon as they finished and started to march off I walked us to the center of the compass and… Well the rest is history. It was great because there where so many people there, having just watched the band play. I had several people yelling, “hey give me your camera, I’ll get a shot”, which I took them up on. Seventeen years ago was before PhotoPass.

Anyway things have worked out pretty well… seventeen years. We just visited this past Jan 24th, which was a Saturday like it was all those years ago.

However you decide, be it quite and somewhat personal (as much as it can be at Disneyland!) at a park restaurant or on an attraction, or right out in front everyone, you can bet you’ll be nervous, you’ll both feel magic, she’ll say yes, and you’ll both never forget.

What were your original ideas that they couldn't do?

Original idea: Was to be walking by one of the random street shows they do and be pulled in and asked to stand there. Then have a Good character like Goofy or Mickey come in and hand her a balloon with a hidden ring tied to the string inside the balloon and a weight on the bottom so it wouldn't fly away. Then a villain character like Pete could come in and would pop the balloon. Goofy would then take the popped balloon place it in my hands and shrug his shoulders like "oh well" then I would open up the pieces of the popped balloon to revile the ring and drop down to my knee and ask her the question. Then Goofy could come back after I ask and hand her a new unpopped balloon. I also wanted to have maybe a friend or family member secretly there to photograph and maybe video tape the whole thing. I also had one last surprise to get us front row for the world of color show later on in the day. Anyways that was my idea but it doesn't seem possible now. I would be happy to do anything that would make her happy though. I want to involve the balloon some how because every time we go she always asks for one :)

My more realistic back up plan now is to do the thing with the photopass people and slip them a note that I will be proposing so we can get photos. I havent completly thought this through but I would go get the balloon and tie it to the end of the box or ring, and then have her wait for me somewhere while I got set it up and come back with the end of the balloon string inside my pocket like its caught on something, then hand the string to her surprize her when she tries to pull it out and get the string unstuck.

Our local sports anchor proposed to his fiancee in front of the castle at night. He went to City Hall and they allowed a PP photog to be dedicated to him and take the photos. They came out great. There isn't anyone else in the photos so as the PP said he may have done it before Fireworks and the CM's let him behind the ropes.

I know someone who proposed on the balcony of the Dream Suite at dusk and those photos are AMAZING too! But he paid for the VIP tour to do it - so if you're willing to spend the $3,000 they would probably help you do anything you want that's available for the VIP tour (In the Lillian Belle, on the Railroad platform with fireworks behind you, in the Court of Angels, etc.)

There seem to be many variables in making a "perfect" proposal at DLR so I would just focus on getting the photos not a big production because so many things can go wrong.
