Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Weekend ** September 2-4, 2011 ** Check-In

I'll make sure I follow your TR when you get it started!

I'm half hoping they'll just move MM to Monday ;) Then I can do the Minnie & Friends character meal during the MM hour even though I have an AP, haha.

Thanks for the map. I haven't paid any attention to it lately. Looks a little different, they're keeping us out of the backstage areas more. I've still got to get my hands on a jogger. I signed up for the stroller division since the whole family will be involved and the 6 year old couldn't be left alone in the hotel! We'll figure something out

Okay~ here are the pics of the headband. The nice thing is that it isn't tight at the ears so it won't drive you crazy after 13 miles!

I'm going to wear mine like this setting it on the bill of my hat and folding Tink up.

I've got 3 extra so let me know if anyone wants one! I got them for the Tink 1/2 but you could use them for DL too.

Kim, those are so cute! I'd love to wear one for the Tink 1/2.

It is very interesting reading how everyone's training is progressing, so I thought I would share my story.

A little background on me - I had 8 knee operations between my 15th and 33rd birthdays, so I have always assumed running was out of the question.

I was in pretty good shape, so I decided to celebrate turning 45 by walking a local half marathon. It completley hooked me and over the following years I was successful in all of the halfs I walked. I could chug along at under a 15 minute pace and was quite comfortable, always finishing strong and never getting swept.

As I approached my 50th birthday I began to see more about the run/walk method as well as Chi running. I decided give this a try figuring that maybe combining the Chi technique with the run/walk discipline would allow me to run in the races I love.

In the last year I have transitioned to a run/walk method. I had hoped to work up to more running than walking, but through trial and error, LOTS of reading and 3 halfs in the past 12 months trying different schemes I have landed on a weird marriage of 3 well known plans:

My basic training plan for a half is the 14 week plan from Marathoning for Mortals. For speedwork I add in Yasso 800s once every ten days from Bart Yasso's Perfect 10 for half marathons and last but not least, all of my running is done at 30 second walk/run intervals as advocated by Jeff Galloway.

I have tried longer intervals and had actually worked up to 3:1s but my knees protested so much that I was really debating on what to do next.

In the middle of this struggle and feeling like a failure as a runner I happened to read Amby Burfoot's article in Runner's World about running the Athens marathon with his wife and son. He wrote that he did the Athens using Galloway's intervals of 30 seconds!! It was an OMG moment for me - if a person with Amby's running credentials could do 30 second intervals, I shouldn't feel embarassed or ashamed if dialing down to that level worked for my body.

Long story short - I settled into 30 second intervals at the beginning of March and since then have set a new PR for the half (by 7 1/2 minutes :woohoo:), have dropped my average mile times by over 1 minute from my best longer interval times and my knees are :cheer2:

I've got 6 miles as my long run this weekend and am very happy with how my DL training has gone thus far. I am getting much better at "feeling" my pace and have actually been doing negative splits on all of my runs.

I am also really enjoying my new "toy" - I upgraded from the Garmin 205 to the Garmin 610 about 10 days ago. It is TOTALLY worth the month of pb and j lunches I am now packing :lovestruc

Good luck to all as we train into the summer heat! Stay hydrated, keep cool and train smart!

Kathy

Thanks for sharing your story, Kathy! It gives me hope that I'll actually be able to do the Tinkerbell Half in January! And I totally didn't know Garmin made things like that. Pretty cool! I've just started to use my iPhone to track my progress. We'll see how that works.

OK, I'm trying to remember where someone had mentioned some good prices on some waist packs or something for running. I'm looking for somehting to carry some stuff in when I run. Now that I'm using my iPhone to track my progress I have to hold it for now (crossing my fingers I don't drop it before I can find something to use) it's too bulky for my tastes to strap on my arm like I did with my iPod nano. I just can't for the life of me remember what I was looking at beforehand.

Any suggestions?

No problem! Just let me know how you want me to get it to you. I can mail it, we can meet up before the DL races or the Tink races. Whatever works for you!

Do you want one w/ bottles for water or just a pouch? I've seen ones that are just a pouch with a belt around your waist and the pouch can expand to hold some stuff like your phone. They sell those at expos for like $20. I can't remember the name of the company, I'll check in the back of my running mag tonight for you. I know that there'll be a couple vendors in DL, and if you want one before, they'll be at the SF Marathon expo the 29th and 30th if you want to pop over. I can get you the address if you want. If you want one that has bottles, they sell those at running stores and Sports Authority. They range anywhere from $30-50, depending on the number of bottles and type of belt you buy. The bottle belts also have a little pouch where you can throw your phone in too.

I carried my iPhone throughout the WDW half. It was inconvenient, but I figured I may as well to save a few seconds from taking it in and out of my pocket.

I bought this at the WDW expo: http://www.ifitnessinc.com/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=14 I think I paid around $20-22 for it, not the $28.95 as the site lists. I bought an arm band from the apple store but it wasn't very secure; it kept bouncing and eventually slid off my arm. The belt doesn't ride up or down while I'm running which makes it great.

It carries what I want: iPhone, headphones, keys and gel packs. I hold a water bottle in my hand if I feel the need to bring one. I don't carry a water bottle during a race because I know I'll be able to grab a drink throughout the course if I need to.

Thanks for the suggestions!! I'm thinking that if I ever want a water bottle with me I'd rather carry it than have it attached to my waist so I'll probably not go for one that holds one. I'm wondering if I should just tough it out and see what they've got during the Expo. I would try to make it out to SF but I can't swing out that far anytime soon right now as much as I wish I could (I've been dying to go to a Giants game). My run today with my iPhone went well enough except for the sweaty hands thing by the end of it.

Anyway! I started Jeff Galloway's 5K program today. I love that there's an App for my phone and I can really keep track of what I'm doing. Today wasn't so bad!

I know exactly which running belt you are thinking of from ifitness. It is the lycra version, but it looks like they ar getting ready to discontinue them as all but the military green version are listed as out of stock. I have used mine for my iPhone too many times to count and it is great. A bonus is that it protects your phone from rainas well. My DH was carrying his Blackberry in his pocket when we were in a 5K and it started to rain HARD! His Blackberry died that night, but my iPhone in the ifitness pouch was just fine! :)

Found it! Along w/ the ifitness belts, there's the spibelt. That one has the pouch has expandy-type material. Their site is www.spibelt.com. Just went to their site and they have a code for free shipping~ ship09. They have a few different types and they start at $20.

I use a SPIbelt and I love it. I fit my chapstick, iphone, and key in it.

I have finally had the nerve to ask for the time off for the race (yes, I registered back in March for a race I didn't have permission yet to take :sad2:) and I got not only Friday but Thursdays as well! I'm excited to finally say that I'm going to DL for my first time as well as for my first DL 1/2!!!

Glad you were able to get the time off!! That's exciting that it'll be your first time at DIsneyland.

OK, just thought I would update! I just placed on order for a Spibelt ;) I even found a coupon for 15% + Free Shipping (usweekly10). Pretty good deal so including CA sales tax it came out to a total of $18.19 - not bad!

I think you'll like it. I can fit everything I need in it and it doesn't bounce around when I run.
