I've posted this thread on the collecting board as well, but I also figured posting here would help as well since I'm trying to save as much money as possible creating my own personal "home away from home".

I'm thinking of collecting the Disney World Monorail set for my den. I've eyed it a few times & I love the huge layouts they have at a few stores at DW. My question is, can anyone tell me what pieces are available for the set & how much each piece costs at the park? I'm watching several Ebay auctions but since I'm heading down to DW next month, I don't want to overpay on Ebay when I can get them cheaper at DW. As far as available pieces, I know there are the resorts, Spaceship Earth, Cinderella Castle, TTC, multiple monorail lines. I've also seen interactive rides/attractions like Dumbo, Haunted Mansion, Alice in Wonderland. I'm not sure if there's a DisneyLand set too, but I only want Disney World pieces. If anyone can help me with any of this info, I'd greatly appreciate it. It's tough to find this info, but I knew if any group could help, it would be you guys. Thanks.

We have bought every piece that has come out for this set. The monorail and the castle are the most expensive components. I think they are about 60. each. We have spent about 25. each for other pieces, like the ones you mentioned. We also got the Disney World sign, and signposts last year. I think some of the pieces have been discontinued, but liquidated on places like Disney Deals & maybe at the outlets. I don't recall an Alice component-that's probably Disneyland, as is the California Coaster (don't recall the actual name) that they have. There are pieces that you can get that aren't necessarily made for the monorail, but may fit in, like the Tree of Life. We bought that at the Disney World toy store. You could call Disney World Marketing and ask for the names and prices of all the pieces, and find out which have been liquidated. Most ebay sellers mark up the prices, but you may find auctions from those that purchased the discontinued pieces at a discount. I know we bought the HM at full price (25 or 35), and then they started showing up on ebay in later years for like 15. We never displayed ours, due to the amount of room it will take up, and the ages of our kids and pets. I'll still continue to buy the pieces, and display when the kids fly the coop.

I have alot of pieces to the set and the prices are anywhere from $25 for the Dumbo ride to (I think) $60 for the Contemporary and Spaceship Earth. The set is nice to look at, but the quality of the pieces is not what you would expect from the price. They are made of plastic and very flimsy. The Contemporary can't be touched or it falls apart. My son originally started the collection, but once he saw the quality of the pieces and that he couldn't actually play with them, he lost interest.

We just came back from WDW and the only pieces we saw for sale are the monorail, the hotels, Spaceship Earth, castle, the sign set, and the tree/lamp post set. I haven't seen the interactive rides in awhile (require interactive posts as well). We have several rides for the set from DL that we bought for half price at WDW (we assume WDW got a wrong shipment). We have always found the most pieces for the set at the gift shop at the exit of Dinosaur at AK (don't know why).

Just so you know, even though they add to the scene, the castle and haunted mansion do not interact with the monorail nor are they designed to be part of the track. The mainly just add to the ambiance.

We have the switching station and the monorail set comes out during the holidays around the Christmas tree and winds throughout all the presents.

I appreciate all the replies. Keep 'em coming. I just picked up a Dumbo piece off Ebay for about $20{$12 for the piece plus $8 s/h}. Is this piece interactive?

Is the monorail sturdy enough to play with? ds wants it and I was debating on buying it for him for christmas when we go up in Dec. tia

Most definitely! Just remember that if you keep the monorail announcements on all the time you will REALLY go through batteries quick! ;)

My DH has been collecting these items for the past couple years. He has several monorails(different colors) and much more. The Alice piece is probably the Tea Cups and is a hard one to get. I won one on Ebay-but they can go pretty high-over $100.00. Also you might want to keep in mind to buy extra track and attraction connectors, just in case some should get damaged. We are going down in several weeks and DH has said he is buying another switch station-just in case they discontinue he wants a backup one.
There is also an Astro Orbitor piece.
Hope you find what you are looking for.

I would recommend calling WDW Merchandising and asking about the Monorail sets - they will tell you what is available and the cost.

You can purchase directly from them and they'll ship it to you. GREAT when you get home from a trip and say "I wish I had bought xyz" - just give them a ring and it's on it's way !!! :)

Yeah, but it's more fun getting the info here. People always add in more info that I never would have thought to ask about.

I think I'll give them a call anyway. bUt keep the responses coming.

I've got an update for all you Monorail collectors out there. I just called WDW Merchandising to get some pricing. Apparently Haunted Mansion is sold out & no longer available. And she told me the Grand Floridian & Contemporary are being discontinued & are now half price at $19.99 each. I went ahead & ordered 1 of each so I wasn't stuck paying double or triple later on Ebay. Just wanted to pass this info along. Thanks for the suggestion to call WDW Merchandising tbelfonti.

Be sure to check out all the outlets when you're there. My son (who is 6) loves Spaceship Earth and we were able to find it for $19.99 at the outlets. They also had some of the railroad pieces and monorail tracks there too. Hope this helps you out!! Good luck with it!!
