OK ... I've been totally confused throughout this thread and it's time to ask ... Someone please explain to me about GTY.. Vacation club... etc. I am totally ignorant.. like no really NO CLUE and blond so I need a slooow explanation of how it all works.

I can't explain the Vacation club but GTY is when you book within a specific category but with no room number. You are guaranteed a room with in that category you booked or higher. GTY rooms are also a bit cheaper as I recall. Hope that helps!

We have the DVC, and when we added points last year, we got this cruise free. But, because it is free, basically what we were given was a GTY that we would have a room in that category. Pretty much I am assuming that those rooms will be assigned out after a certain point of allowing people that are paying to select there rooms.

Normally, we use our DVC points to book at SSR or BLT for our Disney Vacations, but we banked the points for this year and are using them towards our 7 day cruise next May/June to Alaska (also on the Wonder). Because we used our points, it's the same thing as paying, and we have a confirmed room on that one.

Vacation Club is like a timeshare for Disney vacations. You buy in with a down payment and then pay once a month for a certain number of points per year. These points are spendable on cruises, wdw, etc. Or you can save them up year to year for a bigger vacation. We are not members, but I was curious and checked out the website for it so I wouldn't waste an hour of cruise going to the informational on onboard.

OH... YES! I thought everyone knew. Emma has no idea we are going to Disney and I won't tell her untill the day we leave(hubby knows about Disney). Then 7 days into our Disney trip I will surprise both of them with the cruise.

You buy the # of points you think would cover your vacation needs for any given year. Like we started out with 230 points at SSR. You can bank them for up to one year, and you can borrow from a future year if you need to. We added points last year so that we could get to BLT. You can either finance this or pay for it directly. Our original package we financed for 10 years. I don't have my paperwork with me right now so, I cant remember the total, but it was in the $16,000 range. We paid for the 100 points we added. The way we look at it, between what we were paying for 6-7 nights, we would have spent the same amount of money as we did buying the vacation club. But, with the vacation club, you own it for 49 years.

The cost of it does depend on which resort is considered your home resort. You also do pay a maintenance fee/property taxes. Again, when I investigated what my annual cost was along with the cost of the DVC, I came to the conclusion that I would overall be spending less than if I directly paid for a vacation. And, if we ever wanted to go other places, we can use it for other places too. We can also use it for Disney Cruises.

There are discounts available for tickets/season passes, as well as some of the stores and restaurants if you a DVC member.

I just like it because basically when I want to go on a vacation, I just have to pay for my travel and activities. My accomodations are paid for.

When you want to schedule a vacation, the points required are based on what time of year and what size room/condo you want.

So after the 7yrs. the 16000 is paid off you keep receiving your points with only paying maintenance fees for 42 years? What do the maintenance fees run? And you can't do the Dining plan? And will the point value go down?... today it cost XXX points to stay for a week, 10yrs from now it cost YYY points and you don't have enough points. Do they have some kind of guarantee on point value?

At the going rate of $101 a point that cost is $10,403. So if I wanted to join the club and take that trip, getting 103 pts. a yr it would cost me $10,403 and then I would get 103 pts. every year? I saw it's a min of 150 pts to purchase.

Jen, earlier I punched in a vacation(mon-sun) over Thanksgiving(an expensive week) with a two bedroom condo, can't remember which property but I think it was one of the more expensive ones and it showed @240 may be 237. In my head I rounded up to 250 thinking that would be the most we would ever need. It comes out to approximately 25250 because I think the cost right now is $101 per point. Financing of course cost more with interest.
