I walked a half marathon (NOTHING compared to running a full marathon, I know

Anyway, it was nice and mild. Can't imagine how it would be running it and running it in the heat bleah I'd keel plumb over!
Hey I'm so glad you're on here, if you don't mind me picking your brain and getting your expert advice.... In Feb I started entering little races like 5K's etc and I run on the treadmill at the gym. Anyway a few months ago my right achilles tendon started killing me and after the walk thingy my right foot puffed up (I had actually been training for it and had walked the route a few times so I don't think it was just the "shock" of walking that long of a distance.
Anyway the foot swelling went down but my achilles tendon still hurts everytime I do the treadmill. I try to stretch it etc. and then I realized my tennies are about 2 years old, way overdue for replacing.
So the last ones I got, literally I just walked in the store, went to the running section and picked one that actually fit and was pink (my favorite color). Now that I'm actually trying to take running a little more seriously do you have any advice on good brands what to look for etc?
I run on the treadmill every day but the "races" I have done have been on city streets or trail runs. Do I need a different shoe for treadmill vs. trails?
Arggh any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Especially regarding my achilles tendon, I can't go more than three miles without keeling over and the pain in my ankle isn't helping me get past that mental barrier that I actually could go 5 miles if I tried.
The frustrating thing is 6 months ago I could go 5 miles no problem (well I take that back, i was huffing and puffing and feeling like puking but I could do it, now I can't go three without hobbling and giving up because the pain isn't going away and I'm worried I'm just making it worse)
Thanks (and sorry that was so long)!
