I go by price and the company's financial rating (usually A to A+). I also look at what they consider a delay, reimbursement rates for lost/stolen luggage, etc. Most recently, we bought a policy with a cancel for any reason as it wasn't much more. Unfortunately there's no magic formula. If one has primary coverage for similar cost as one that has secondary coverage, then I'd go with the one that offers primary coverage.

. If a student has applied for a job at the same place one of their previous professors work, would it be inappropriate to email that teacher and ask them if they wouldn't mind being a reference? My husband says it's inappropriate, but I don't think it is. As a professor yourself, what do you think? I should probably mention that my professor is/was my polysci teacher and his day job is as a judge for the city of Riverside. I am currently being considered for a records clerk position at the same courthouse he works at. Thoughts??

having been both a adjunct prof and a judge, I can tell you that it is not inappropriate but probably very appropriate to list the former professor/now judge as a reference. They WILL go ask him about you. (make sure it would be a goooood reference). He doesn't do hiring/firing; there's probably a court administrator, but the court administrator is going to want someone that the judges/rest of staff are happy with.

Did anybody get cruise insurance NOT through their travel agent? I got it last time not from the travel agent, but from another website. I just remembered I haven't done that yet. Is it to late? I thought I remember reading somewhere you have to get it within a week of booking a cruise. Is that right? What websites did you guys use? I think it was www.insuremytrip.com that I used last time. Now I can't remember. I need to look for the paper.

I was a travel agent for 8 years and I always sold and used Access America for my personal trips. Their website is http://www.accessamerica.com/

What everyone else said is 100% accurate (of course)! Usually they try to get you to buy insurance right away because purchasing it within a certain amount of time from the original booking dates waives pre-exsisting conditions. For instance, if you have to cancel for a medical reason and you booked within that time frame - you are covered whether or not the condition is pre-existing. However, if you purchase it outside of that time frame and have a condition which existed within 6 months of your booking date, then you are not covered. With that said, you can generally purchase the insurance up until your final payment or final payment date (depending on the company). Mostly it is due before your final payment date and must be purchased with or before you make your final payment on the cruise.

For anyone considering insurance I'd also like to point out the medical coverage. Yes, insurance covers cancellation for certain reasons, trip delay, lost baggage, etc. However, the most important reason to purchase it is for the medical coverage! What most people don't realize is that (most) personal insurance does not cover you in international waters! Think about it this way: if you are on a shore excursion (or ship), trip and fall and break your leg - the cruise ship does not have the ability to deal with that. You will have to pay to be taken to a hospital at the closest port (life-flighted off if necessary), you will be left at that location and the cruise will go on without you. You will be responsible for paying for any medical assistance the ship gave you, the transportation to the hospital (whatever that may be), the medical attention and stay in the hospital, AND you will have to pay out of pocket to get yourself and any family members home back in the United States (airfare, etc). You would be looking at tens of thousands of dollars! I once had a passenger (not old, mid 40's) who insisted she didn't need the insurance. Her husband died on the ship. Can you imagine?!?!? After it was all said and done - it cost her over $100,000 to get the body off the ship, from the country they were in back into the U.S. etc., etc.!! No matter what you think/hope/know won't happen - PREPARE FOR IT ANYWAY!

OK - I will shut up now I'm not saying you have to purchase the insurance, I just want everyone here to know how important it is! LOL - with that said I will admit that I have not purchased my insurance yet!

Kris & Karen: Thank you both for the advice on my ex-professor! I really appreciate it.

Karen: LOL - yes, I was a good student! I was one of few to get an A in his class. Being a polisci class he wanted dialog and vocalization, especially about current events - whether he disagreed or not. But, only about 5 or 6 out of 30+ of us participated, so he knew our names and not theirs. He was also pretty strict on the papers (he assigned the textbook plus 3 additional books for the semester - one of which was 900 pages!) - he was SO ANNOYED after the first papers were turned in because of the lack of quality. Most people didn't do well, but I always got A's on them. He is also the one that suggested to me that I look into a job with the city, so he's really the reason I'm being considered at all! (Granted, it took the city 6 months after getting my resume to contact me! How insane!!).

You were a judge? That's awesome! I used to want to get into law, but I decided to become a teacher instead. I LOVE jury duty though! I hate it when people sit in the holding room and complain about having to be there, it really ticks me off! I've been called twice and been chosen for the jury twice, and I think it's great.

I will definitely contact him! (School is out right now though, so I hope he checks his email!)

Kris: Yes - pretty much all of my teachers have been part time, and it SUCKS! My math teacher last semester was horrible - she refused to help anyone after class time because she wasn't a full time teacher. She would just say, "I don't have office hours because I'm part time. I can't help you; you'll need to go to the Math center." She was HORRIBLE! I think the only full time professor I've had was when I had a problem with my English teacher freshman year and had to finish the class in 1:1 meetings with the English department chair (that was a NIGHTMARE situation!) Other than that, I think everyone else has been part time! I've had professors in interesting fields though; judges, engineers for boeing, statisticians, and even a teacher who had NEVER taught college before, she had been teaching 7th grade English (and it showed)!

LOL - no offense, but I've avoided taking Phych classes! I'm glad that they weren't/aren't required for my major or transfer requirements and I've been able to choose other classes! Granted, I don't know what a psych class is really all about, I've just always been leery because I've had problems with psychologists/psychiatrists in the past and my mom is a legal nutcase. I've always preferred to stay away from those topics (as much as I can anyway). I'm curious though, what kinds of things do you talk about in a psych class?

It actually can be a fun class.

I see from your signature that you've stayed at Coronado Springs and Port Orleans FQ. We've stayed at Port Orleans and Pop Century and have decided that the value resorts are not for us. However, I'd like to know your thoughts between the two. Which one did you like better? The FQ was nice because of it's size and being the first pickup on the bus route, but I always wonder what we were missing in terms of amenities.

I could have taken psychology to fulfill my social sciences, but instead I've taken sociology (which was FAR too liberal for me), political science (which was an amazingly interesting class), and history 111 (my minor will be history, so it helps me there). I could have also taken psychology to fulfill lifelong learning and self-development, but instead I'm taking nutrition. I chose nutrition because I've always battled with food (and I'm diabetic), so I think it's a class I will benefit from. Now that I'm talking to you about it and thinking a little more about it, becoming a teacher I probably should have take psychology or child development or something. Woops. Do you know, when I get my single subject teaching credential will I have to take something like this? What you mentioned, learning about how biases and experience contaminate your thought process, I think that would be fun! I guess my experiences and biases towards clinical psychologists wrongly contaminated my thought process towards psychology classes.

Yes, and we've also stayed at Pop Century, too. We just don't like to announce or admit it! We will never, ever stay at a value resort again - unless there is some off-hand circumstance where we have no other choice. For Port Orleans I should mention that it was French Quarter, not Riverside. We would probably not stay at Riverside, it's too spread out, the bus goes there after FQ so buses seem more difficult. We love, love, love french quarter - the atmosphere and ambiance suit us well. It's also a bit smaller of a property and the bus goes there 1st, so we like it. The food is not great, but also not horrible compared to other resort food. For Coronado the room was actually nice, nicer than the french quarter rooms. However, the food situation there alone is enough to make us not want to stay there. There property is nice, bigger than we'd normally like, but quite and relaxing with the water and the hammocks along the meandering pathways. Ryan also loves the 3 caballeros - so he gets a real kick out of it. But truly, the food alone is enough to make us stay away! That said, I guess your question was really to compare Port Orleans and Pop, so here goes that. Value resorts are horrible! I know it's still Disney, but the attitudes of the cast members are different and the quality of service is lacking. The rooms feel just like a Travelodge or something of that caliber, and there's no "magic" to me there. It's not anything I can really explain, it's just the way the value resorts make me feel. The rooms are definitely smaller at a value, and the decoration inside leaves something to be desired. As far as amenities go, I don't know that you're really missing anything. In truth you get the bus service at both a value and a moderate, they both have food options, etc. I don't recall if our value had an ironing board and stuff (i don't think so), but I believe the moderates do, every hotel has pools and stuff, so there's no real difference there. Really, I think the difference is mostly just ambiance and quality of room/stay in general. We are Disney Vacation Club members now so we really only stay at Animal Kingdom or other DVC properties, but if we had to stay at a moderate on cash, we would choose FQ and then Coronado Springs next. As I said before, unless we absolutely were forced into it, we would never stay at a value again! Does that help?!?! Feel free to ask me anything - I love talking Disney!

As my husband already said, we lived in Vegas until last March when we were forced to move , and we miss is horribly! We'd love to move back there, but unfortunately that's probably not possible until the economy turns around, so several years Whereabouts in Vegas do you live? We were in Centennial Hills and we LOVED it! Like Ryan said though, not being there in the dead of summer is nice though. Then again, even though it's 110 in Vegas and 90 here, it feels hotter here because there's no humidity in Vegas - so on that I might disagree with him

POR (Port Orleans Riverside) and POFQ (Port Orleans French Quarter) are pretty similar to each other. Coronado Springs (CSR) is a much different experience than the other moderates. CSR is in large part a conference hotel (home of the largest ballroom in the Southeast US) so the Disney theme is played down.

I've stayed at POFQ 3 separate times. It is the smallest moderate resort at WDW. Even if you get the room that is the farthest away from the front desk the walk is still pretty short (a few minutes). We have literally been in the farthest possible rooms (BLDG 7, corner room, 3rd floor) and the walk is about the same as the walk from the middle of the Animal Kingdom Lodge to the bus stop. The only dining options at POFQ is the counter service food court. The food isn't awful, but it isn't great either. Since the resort is so small the walk to refill your drink mug isn't too bad. There used to be a table service restaurant here, but it closed nearly 10 years ago. You can take the boat or walk to the restaurant at POR, but personally I would just take the boat to Down Town Disney and eat there. The pool is pretty small, but you can use the POR pool too. Personally we don't use the pools so it isn't a big deal to us. I think that the theme of POFQ is the best of the moderates, I really enjoy the fact the you are walking down little "streets" as you walk around the resort. POFQ has the best moderate bus service in my opinion. It often shares buses with POR, but POFQ is the first to be picked up and the first to be dropped off. When it is busy it sometimes gets its own buses to and from some of the parks.

We've never stayed at POR, but I've done quite a bit of research on it. It is much, much larger than POFQ, with literally twice as many rooms. All of the buildings at POFQ are 3 story, while at POR there is a mix of 2 and 3 story so the resort is much more spread out. It looks like it can be quite a hike from the far end of resort back to the front desk. The food court is basically the same items as at POFQ, just more busy since there are twice as many people. There is a table service restaurant which is always packed. I've never been there, but I have read mixed reviews about it. You can take the boat to Down Town Disney just like from POFQ. The bus service is pretty awful (in my opinion) since it uses multiple stops (4). When the buses are busy most of seats will be taken after the 1st or 2nd stop which leaves people with standing room only or no room at all by the 3rd and 4th stop. This was a big problem when we stayed are Saratoga Springs a few years ago, there is nothing fun about being at the last bus stop and waiting 45 minutes to get on a bus because the last 3 buses that came by were full. This is also a problem at CSR since they use 4 bus stops. POR is the only moderate which can sleep 5 since some of the rooms have a pull down bed.

We've stayed at CSR once. I've read some reviews that compare CSR to mini-deluxe resort, but I don't think that is accurate. While I think that it is "nicer" than the other moderates, it is also more sterile. CSR doesn't really fit in with the other moderates because it really caters to the conference crowds while also trying to be Disney resort. The resort is big and spread out, even more than POR, and has almost as many rooms (1950 vs 2000). The big plus about CSR is the bed situation. The rooms are bigger than the other moderates so the beds are two queen sizes beds instead of two full size beds, there are also more king size bed rooms than the other moderates. If I remember correctly at POR and POFQ king bed rooms are around 3% of the rooms, at CSR is it more like 10%. There is a table service restaurant, which I have not been to, that gets mixed reviews, but is not crowded and doesn't need a reservation. There is a little quick service cafe with soda fountain to refill your mugs and some prepared food items (some fresh prepared items as well). Then there is the Pepper Market which is the counter service food court with servers. I really don't understand the concept here since the servers don't do anything. Basically there are some themed areas with different types of food, you order then you wait for your food just like at the other food courts, but the servers clear you plates so there is a 10% service charge. The food was somewhat better than the other food courts while also being more expensive before adding in the service charge. The food is freshly prepared so it takes longer and may not be family friendly. There is also a lounge here (I believe that it is privately operated), while all the moderates have a lounge/bar this one is more like a night club. The recreation here is better than at POFQ and POR. The pool is amazing and there is a big lake in the middle with seasonal boat rentals. All of the moderates have bike rentals and fish poles available. The bus situation is multi-stop like POR. Since this resort seems to attract more couples and less families and since it has less rooms than POR & POFQ (when they use combined bus service) the waits and crowds for the bus aren't too bad. You still have to deal with standing room only if you are at the later stops.

In my mind it comes down to POFQ vs CSR since POR has a lot of the same problems as CSR (size/crowd) without the benefits (bed and room sizes). I personally prefer POFQ since it seems more magical, because the bus service is great and because I enjoy the boat to DTD. With that being said our last POFQ stay was in a king bed, if I had to spend a long trip in a full size bed CSR would look almost as good.

There are 4 of us DH, DD (8) and DS (5) and myself. We're super excited to be going on our first cruise!I have to say though after reading up on some of the posts we are not as Disneyfied as all of you on this thread, either when it comes to cruising or to DL/WDW! I remember reading someone's post about "This is the part where you stone me" b/c her kids haven't grown up on Disney movies etc. and I'm afraid to say we're in the same boat! My kids need some brushing up on Disney characters, my son had found a pic of Chip and Dale the other day and thought it was Alvin and the Chipmunks!!! Yikes! We have some movies to watch!

Undecided about the FE yet but will let you know Jessica. Leaning more towards a yes though, it just feels overwhelming!!

Hey gang, we just got back home after a three-night camping trip. I'm glad to see you all behaved yourselves! I see I've got some catching up to do! But first I hope you all had a great weekend and a fun and safe 4th!

Jessica/Ryan - You two did a fantastic job with the logos. I think the 4th one fits the name the best and is my favorite. They are all really good though. I really like the 2011 logo with the wheel as the 0. Very nice touch!

Emily/Jessica - You two crack me up with your movie talk. My wife is hooked on the series and is trying to get me to see the new one. I saw the last one but Amy talked me into a double date with her co-worker and her husband and after I agreed, told me what we were seeing. We may need a ruling from Karen but I suspect, while it was very unethical, it was perfectly legal. In watching the movie, I was more confused than anything because I hadn't read the books and didn't see the first movie. I'm hoping one of Amy's friends pull through and take her to see the new one so I don't have to go. Maybe all this vampire and werewolf talk will make Amy come out of her posting hybernation!

Sue - If your margarita recipe is a hit, please send it to me. It's supposed to reach 67 tomorrow here on the coast and I'm going to need to cool off any way I can!

Tonya - I have been researching the canopy tour quite a bit and exchanged emails with the company. If your husband wanted to do it but you didn't, you can go along and not do the actual zip line. If you book directly through the company, you can just pay $20 and take the transportation there, swim in the river, visit with the monkeys, eat in the restaurant, etc. without doing the actual zip line.

We are going but my daughter is too young to do it so we are going to take turns watching her while the other does the zip line and then take a later shuttle back.

Kris - We've stayed at all four of the true moderates so let me know if you have any questions. I see Jessica and Ryan did a great job of giving their thoughts. I actually really prefer POR over POFQ. I did like the smaller size of POFQ as the long walks to the food court and front bus stop got old at POR. What I loved most about POR is more than any other moderate or value, I felt like I was really in that setting rather than just staying at a well-themed hotel. The bus service was pretty bad, only when it went to all of the bus stops. We sometimes got lucky and the front stop by the lobby would be the first.

A lot of people complain about CSR because of the convention feel and seeing some people walking around in business and business-casual attire. It didn't bother me as I really didn't see much of it. Pepper Market is widely regarded as the best counter service restaurant in the moderates (and values for that matter). I loved it and think it's far superior to any counter service place for any resort we've stayed. My only complaint is that they have a weird system where they stamp a card for everything you pick out and then pay on your way out. It's strange. The table service place was not bad at all but not very memorable. We had breakfast there one morning. CSR is really spread out too but the property is beautiful and the most clean of any of them. If I had to rank them though, I'd go with POR, CSR not too far behind, CBR a distant third and very closely followed by POFQ. I know I'm in the minority though!

Andrea - Welcome to the group. Hey, there's no such thing as turning 40. We just celebrate our 29th birthday for the 12th time! Ooh good, more kids on the ship. We will be celebrating my DD's 5th birthday a month early on the ship. She will be happy to hear there are other little girls in our group.

Cori - No worries about not being as "Disneyfied" as some of the rest of us. Just keep posting here and we will find submliminal ways to convert you! I was never actually into Disney until I met my wife. My first trip to Disneyland with her is what got me hooked. I hope you decide to do the FE as it will be a lot of fun.

I have stayed at the POFQ, but haven't stayed at any of the other moderate resorts. Our 1 night stay before the Magic in January at the Pop was enough for me to realize that the values won't cut it for me and my family. I did love the POFQ because of its size, but always wondered if I was missing out on something that was offered at the larger moderates. For instance, we walked around PO and noted that the quick serve restaurant had a lot more options.

I'm not sure when we'll get back to WDW, but we will be spending a long weekend at DL in October for my birthday, so I'm looking forward to that.
