Hello
We Plan to go on a Cruise in July.
We are thinking of the Wish 4 Night Cruise or the 5 Night Fantasy with 2 Stops at castaway cay.

Is the Fantasy old and Dated?

What would you Choose for the First Disney Cruise ?

2 adults and 1 Boy ( 7 Years old )

thanks

I'm a first time cruiser also and I chose the Wish for my family because I felt more drawn to the modern staterooms (the bathrooms in particular do look dated to me on the older ships), the seemingly enhanced kids' clubs, and the dining options. My family is really looking forward to the dinner shows on the Wish. Friends of mine who have been on multiple ships say the food on the Wish is the best. However, there are many people who seem to prefer the older ships and longer cruises. Everyone has their own opinions on things. You probably can't go wrong.

I’ve cruised on both of these gorgeous ships. Fantasy is not outdated! Two stops at Castaway seals the deal!

Fantasy is not old and dated; it's been kept up beautifully. I almost always choose the longer itinerary (and in this case with the double dip definitely would!).

I would pick the Fantasy - most importantly, I would get a Cat 8A (cabin 5020, 5022, 5520, or 5522) for the extra space, divider wall, and two large portholes. It only has the single bath (most cabins have 2 half-baths, one a toilet + sink, the other a tub + sink).

I love the floor space, access to closets, longer desk. This was 5520. I recommend 5020 or 5022 due to some noise from movie theater (or Walt Disney Theater). These cabins only sleep 3 people (no pull-down upper bunk).

Kid’s side (back of sofa flips forward, with built-in twin bed). There are two TVs, so not everyone has to watch.

View from the bed. Other large porthole is to the right. Bathroom is to the left, as is front door.

I do not take advantage of having a verandah when I get one, so I would hands down rather have room inside the cabin. I enjoyed sleeping with the curtains open and waking up to the view of the ocean.

I do like the 5-night Double Dip itinerary. It makes a nice beach vacation - if your idea of a day (or two) at the beach does not require big water slides, a pool, loud music (like Royal Caribbean‘s Coco Cay).

You might think they are outdated. They still have decor from the 2010s - and that was styled after the early 1900s’ ocean liners. But not falling apart; they are in continuous update, fresh paint, new carpet… You can see what part of a cabin looks like in these photos. And all bathrooms from 1998 - 2012 ships (until the Wish) are the same look.

I recommend you decide the length of cruise, itinerary, and embarkation port (for travel/transport and pre-cruise lodging) AND budget more than picking your vacation by the ship (for Disney).

Yes we are deciding between a wish varanda stateroom or an fantasy oceanview stateroom ( same price)

Is the kids club a good one for a 7 year old boy?

An extra day for the same price? Sweet.

If you like a little room around your dining table, not so close your neighbors are essentially your tablemates, go with Fantasy. Also, Fantasy has Animator’s Palate restaurant with Nemo ”swimming” from video screen to video screen around the restaurant - and interacting with the guests.

It really is hard to go wrong with either. They are pros and cons for any ship.

yes maybe 100 usd difference. but an oceanview instead of an varanda.

the question is, do we need an varanda?

I don’t. I find them too hot if it’s warm outside. If you are the sit in the verandah type (not just drinking mint juleps 🤣), go for it if price is okay. And I manage to end up near balcony smokers, making it frustratingly unpleasant. Yes, it’s not allowed, but it happens.

Lots of people enjoy morning coffee or sunsets out there, without the crowds. I head for the covered walking promenade outside for peaceful fresh air.

Well, that price difference does not help in decision making. I thought it would be more, even with the different cabin category.

Do you expect to use the adult water and sun area on the ship? That could make a difference.

Also, quick service food on the Wish has new, additional, offerings.

Look at the big production show to see if either appeals more to your family.

The movie theater is way better on the Classic 4 ships.

I think the Wish pools are more like watering holes v, a larger, deeper bathtub.

Some things to help break a tie, possibly.

We dont want to use the adult Area realy much ( we are with a 7 year Old)

We want to use the Pools😄

The Price is higher on the Fantasy. Arround 1000 usd if we choose the varanda room

The kids' clubs on the Fantasy are awesome. My boys always had the time of their lives there. When we sailed on the Wish, they had already "graduated" to the teens' clubs and didn't really care much in reality. So I can't really compare Fantasy and Wish on kids clubs. But for my boys, who really like Star Wars and Marvell, they always loved the clubs on the Fantasy.

The Wish

Everyone who is recommending the Fantasy is not thinking of this answer for someone who is cruising for the first time. The Wish complaints are all based on layout and prefering a different ship if you had sailed on one before, very minor.
The food is better on the Wish, rooms look MUCH better, entertainment is great, castaway cay is fine for 1 day.

*EDIT: if your concern is running in full circles on the outdoor deck, not sitting too close to the dining table next to you, & not having an elevator right in the middle of the ship, then sure, pick the Fantasy*

Also, a verandah is a MUST. You dont realize it until you try it. Room is brighter, fresh air, the feel of being out on the balcony with the sun and ocean, especially if you want to have some seperate time from the kids, its really really nice.

Besides, if people think the Fantasy is better, wouldn’t it make sense to start with the Wish and enjoy it so when you sail the Fantasy you “upgrade”?
(Wish is better).
