so it is better to eat throughout the day so your body never has to go into that starvation mode, as long as its the right kind of foods :thumbsup2

Your body doesn't go into starvation mode because you only eat one or two meals a day. Your body goes into starvation mode because you have too high of a calorie deficit or your missing essential nutrients, vitamins, or fats.

well yeah thats what i meant

My bio teacher said that it is actually better for you to eat more than 3 meals a day. If you eat about 5 SMALLER meals a day, then your body won't have as much extra stuff left over in it's system to store as fat.

Honestly, your bio teacher sounds like she's talking out of her butt. Unless your constantly eating, and I mean every second of the day, your body's going to store energy, wether it's in the form of fat, ATP, ect. Your body doesn't always store excess "stuff" as fat. I'm 100% sure she'll agree to that fact. If she doesn't, she needs to go back to a freshman biology class where you learn that. The difference between say two meals and six meals is the speed of your metabolism; and even then, you're only looking at burning around thirty more calories per day. Average that over a year, and you're looking at only a difference of three pounds. This is why I've taken on the challenge of fasting, because I'm trying to show people around me that six meals a day isn't necessary to burn fat. And back to the storing fat, even if you did, as long as you're in a calorie deficit you'll end up burning that energy anyway, no matter how many meals you ate.

So, simply put, as long as you eat less calories than you need, you'll lose weight. It doesn't matter if you eat one meal or if you eat fifteen.

Also, you won't be tempted as much to snack on junk throughout the day.

That's a personal issue, not fact. Some people find that if they eat larger meals less frequently, they are less likely to snack. I've found that whenever I eat more than four meals, I find myself wanting to snack.

Hm...this is all very interesting to me. I am in a constant personal battle over my weight/body image. I'm not overweight, just weight more than I would like to. I lost some weight (like ten pounds) two years ago with basketball and kept it off f because of basketball, but when I stopped playing about a year ago I put those ten pounds right back on. For the last six months, I've been trying to make an effort to lose some of it again.
OP...how are you doing? Same to any one else who was trying to drop some pounds?

you can think about raven Simone before you try to eat.

First off her name is Raven Symone not Raven Simone and second off that was the most uncalled for comment ever one the dis...
She's a lovely inspirational young lady who is her self and doesn't care about what others think of her
Quit bashing others...

I know that I'm not the biggest inspiration ever with weight lost as I sit here eating my M&M's and drinkin Mountain Dew :rolleyes1
But try exercising drinking loads of water and just trying to be healthy
I lost 10 pounds in last 3 but I caught the Norovirus and have been puking alot and just got over it today (I can the 400 sick Elementary kids for that...)
But just keeping healthy drinking lots of water can really help also staying away from processed food...

Thought I'd bump this. I'm starting a diet on June 1st. I'm throwing away every junk food or fatty food I can find in my house, that way I'll have less urges. I want to do a diet plan of some kind, but I'm not sure which one. I've never really been on a 'diet'. I'm completely wanting to do this in a healthy way. Really, I'm looking for a lifestyle change, but I do need to lose some weight.

I've never really done it healthily. I've always either eaten too much or really nothing.

I know it will be hard, but I'm excited. :)

first i'd like to start off by saying that raven symone comment was SO unbelieveably(sp?) rude. she is happy with her body and she is a beautiful young woman who is an amazing talent and you shouldnt have said that.

second.. i wanna flatten my stomach by the summer to wear a bikkini...anybody have some words of advice?

Find maintence calories. Subtract 500 from that. Eat that many calories in healthy foods. Exercise 3x per week. Drink 8+ glasses of water a day.

And boom. That simple.

Update on the fast.

Today was my first day.. I made it for 20 hours [was planning only on 18], which is pretty good. I broke the fast with some chicken and Special K Red Berries dry. Then I weight lifted, and consumed a homemade protein bar, smores poptart [lol, sugar's good post-workout], and a bag of chex mix. I just ate 2/3 a box of whole grain macaroni & cheese and I'll be having a chicken breast and peanut butter/jelly sandwich for my last meal later. So far, so good. I had some minor headaches when I didn't eat this morning, but eventually the hunger pangs went away. I'll eat my last meal at around 7, and then fast again until 2 p.m. tomorrow.

How do you find maintenance calories?

How do you find maintenance calories?

The absolute best way is a BMR test. You can usually do these at health clinics, however they can cost somewhere between $15-$50, depending on what all you have read.

If not, there's different things, such as finding your BMR based on height, age, weight. And then multiply it by a number based on your activity level to get your maintence calories. Unfortunealy, this doesn't work well for someone like me, who has a much lower body fat % than the typical 5'10" 155 lb. 15 year old.

The best way, that's free, that I've been able to use is called the Total Metabolism Forecaster. It was created by a fellow poster on a nutritional website I visit. The thing is, it can be difficult to figure out, unless you know pretty much what you eat on a daily basis, how often/long and what you do for exercise each week, and what your goals are.

Here's a link to the excel spreadsheet for the TMF. You can give it a whirl.

Day three of fasting.. I decided instead of stuffing myself with more pasta during my eating time, that I'd do a typical day's worth of food. So, for breakfast at 2:30, I had some dry Special K. Then was my workout, then my typical protein shake. Then I had my normal lunch [16 oz. chicken breast & PBJ]. Then I had some flat-out pizzas, using the Flat-Out brand things from Wal-Mart, with pizza sauce, fat-free cheese, and chicken breast. Amazing. Just had another PBJ sandwich to end the night.

So far, so good. My alertness at school has really gone up. I'm still having morning food cravings, but they go away quick.

Its funny you think that. I first started my diet by eating 3 meals, however I gained 8lbs. I eat a nice breakfast(2eggs,toast,a cookie) and come dinner I eat cereal, fudge bar, and sometimes a little bit of meat. If I told everyone how much I weight before you would be shocked!!! I sleep much better at night and have much more energy all day!!! I don't think you need 3 meals a day, 2 is more appropriate. And if everyone thinks eating 3 meals helps lose weight they need to think again!!! Once a week(my family eats out) I get anything I want. Not everyone can eat 3 meals and loss weight(I'm one of them).

sorry but i dnt think tht the food you eat is very healthy!
and different peoples bodys lose wieght in different ways so some people should eat 2 and some should eat 3.
