Disney VS Carnival

It's NOT a contest. People here like DCL better than any other cruise line, for the most part. Whether other lines build 1 ship or 20, it does not matter to DCL nor does it matter to loyal DCL passengers. So why do you insist that you have to be right and that DCL is so inferior to all other cruise lines? Really, you are probably the only one who cares.

I do know that RCCL and NCL and Carnival Corp have built more ships, have some very inovative products and offerings. I think that many others that post here are also aware of the same. But it does not make them hate DCL, dislike DCL, or even want to stop sailing DCL. You may "win the argument" but to what end?

I am still going to win the argument because the ships built numbers are going to be 3 or 4 times, maybe more, than DCL. I actually looked it up over a year ago you noticed I wrote approximately not exactly. Remember DCL may fill up two ships at 2800, but RCI has two ships they fill every week that makes up for maybe four DCL ships. Carnival has built 14 ships since 1999 and working on a 16th one. Do you think RCI has built 6 ships since 1999? Maybe you can find out.

RCI and Carnival do not engage in the business of theme parks, so why would they want to build theme parks. Disney is the theme park builder, no questions about it. Just like RCI and Carnival are the cruisers, no doubt about it.

How is anything as popular with 2% of the market compared to about 90% some other 2 share, get real. Disney theme parks have about 60% of the market and they are tops. Cruising is a little different story.

I just checked Carnivals web site and they list 10 new ships since 1999

Well... I guess Universal and any other theme park besides Disney just needs to close their doors and get on with other business then... Mall of America just needs to shutter theirs as well. Must not be popular since they have never built another!

Well, guess that makes Castaway Cay the winner as Disney is in the theme park business.

DCL never set out to be the biggest, they simply built two ships originally that proved to be far popular than they ever anticipated, so they have built 2 more. And so far, at least the last time I checked, they were pretty full!

And what Edd does not understand is the bottom line...profitability :thumbsup2 I have seen one of the other two guys in bankruptcy protection at least once if not twice in the last 11 years :scared1:

I'm not sure if bankruptcy has any significance to the current cruise lines. After all, Walt Disney once filed for bankruptcy.

Woody

I counted 16 Carnival ships since 1999 and 14 RCL ships since 1999. Looks like even NCL outdid DCL in the building of ships, also with about 6, since 1999. Check all the classes of Carnivals. Does that mean DCL is a big hit with only 3 ships built since 1999.

Bankruptcy don't mean anything to businesses but to escape some tremendous bills they accumulated in the past. They usually continue on with business. A big corporation that goes broke usually sells out to another company, not bankrupt.

Yes.

What is your point?

Sure it does it shows stability in the market place

When did Disney corp. file for bankruptcy? I do not remember that one

What I have discovered, at least for me, is that what I like about cruising, besides being able to reconnect with my family, is that I finally get to shut off the cell phone and relax. We just got off one of Carnivals oldest ships and I will tell you that I had just as much fun on that ship as we did on one of RCCL's newest ships, the Freedom. What I thought was funny was that, in an earlier post, somebody mentioned all of the things to do on the Freedom. Well, we found most of those same things on a 20 year old Carnival cruise ship. The layout was a bit different, but they still had the shows, the pizza, the shops, the play area, etc. Minus the rock wall and the flow rider, the ships were very similar in services provided. Maybe one had three pay restaurants instead of the one, or a separate movie theater instead of using the stage for both, maybe the casino was a bit smaller. It was nice not having to walk that "football field" every time I wanted to go somewhere, to get a bite of pizza, to go eat at the buffet, to go lay out by the pool, etc.

If you don't see my point I will point it out. DCL does not have the market to build new ships. They are not that big of a hit as they have not been able to expand their market in cruising like they have been able to do in theme parks and entertainment. The facts are right in front of you.

Disney is a big hit with everyone who likes DCL, but that doesn't means they are a big hit with everyone else as some poster previously tried to state.

That was never their business plan!

Smart business planning....how many great companies bust because they allow themselves to get too big, too fast. Choosing to be conservative in expansion is not as simple as being or not being a big hit....and I'm not sure you know what a fact is.

They just doubled their market share. Sorry, more than doubled it. Do not seem to have any problems filling their ships... Seem to be a pretty big hit to me!

RCCL seems to be a big hit with those that like RCCL. CCL seems to be a big hit with those that like CCL. So what's the point.

Please provide link to poster you mention!

So your point is that DCL has fewer ships than other cruise lines, and even though they sail at or near capacity, because they have fewer ships they are not as "popular" as other lines. And as near as I can tell that makes DCL the worst cruise line in the industry in your eyes. Got it. Why that is so important to you that you have to "win the agrgument" here is still beyond my thought process.

As someone else said RCCL is popular with people who love RCCL, NCL is popular with people who love NCL. DCL is popular with people who love Disney and cruising. Which I think was part of the thought process when The Walt Disney Company began thinking about building their own ships. THey already saw how "popular" the Big Red Boats were, they were "The Official Cruise Line of Walt Disney World", but Disney had no real contol of the ships. Buy building thier own, they are able to design them using their experience in knowing what guests want. They did not build Disney World on the Seas, they build cruise ships for the Disney fan.

FTR, Walt DIsney declared bancruptcy at least 2 times, the cartoon business was not all it was hoped it would be for him.

I was reading about the top 15 cruise lines in the world. Disney was ranked 15. Carnival and Royal Caribbean were not ranked. :confused3
Here is the end of the article. It was too long to post the whole thing.

# 13 - CELEBRITY CRUISES
# 14 - LINDBLAD CRUISES
# 15 - DISNEY CRUISE LINE
You may have noticed that the largest cruise lines have not been rated among the top 15 lines. Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean have huge advertising budgets. But they score significantly lower then the brands listed above in overall quality. They operate large ships with large lines at the institutional buffets. They have spectacular hardware, much like floating Las Vegas resorts. But they lack personal service and they must, as a result of their size, stop at ports designed to handle the mega-ships and the tens of thousands of daily passengers they disgorge.
The Mega-ships are characterized by low initial prices and strong pressure onboard to purchase extra services up to and including bottled water and soft drinks. Gratuities are not included. Sea days are added to itineraries, where possible, to increase onboard alcohol and shop revenue.
Mega-ships can only call at ports that are populated by other mega-ships. Intimate, out-of-the way locations are rarely included on itineraries becasue of the need to have onshore facilities that can serve 3,000 or so guests.
For those on a strict budget, any of these lines can provide an excellent vacation value. Each of these lines has features that are worthy of note. They do, as a group, have better children's programs then any of the lines that are in the Top Ten. Only Disney provides better onboard children's programs then Royal Caribbean.

To answer a couple questions on this rather popular, debatable, and loaded statement....the Walt Disney Company did in fact file for bankruptcy. It was talked about in a long documentary about Walt Disney that I watched on (PBS?, not sure about the station). Secondly, I believe alot of people on here might be to the slightest extent, bias towards towards DCL. that is just SLIGHTLY. because alot of people on here, NOT EVERYONE, has just cruised with DCL and only know/used to the DCL ways. and they also focus mostly on what other people say in trip reports rather than experiencing it themselves and actually getting their own opinion. instead of doing comparisons, focus on having a good time on your vacation and experience something that most people dont have the priveledge to go on as of now. for instance, many many people on here, especially on this thread in particular, label Carnival as the all out party ship and give them a bad reputation/connotation all across the board. so obviously you dont want your family in that sort of "atmosphere". we had an absolute blast and the negative "partying boat" label was basically only in effect late at night like 11:30 PM or later and most of the time it is low key. only if your out hunting for it will you actually see it. but in fact, when my family and I went on our Carnival cruise in July, we threw the fact that we have been on 6 DCL cruises completely OUT OF THE DOOR, and went on just as any regular vacation!! not a competition between cruise lines and not focusing on whos better at what in all aspects!!:lmao::lmao: I am sick and tired of seeing that. View your cruise as a vacation and a good time, not the chance to be a snob critic :lmao::lmao:
