Anyone who has applied to Disney Visa...

We received a letter in the mail today asking for the following info:

1. Current electric bill.
2. Current phone bill.
3. Photocopy of social security card.

Now, while I don't mind #'s 1 and 2, I'm pretty uncomfortable sending a copy of my social security card. Has anyone run into this and what, if anything, did you do? Other comments appreciated also!

Hi I was asked for the same & called them. I spoke with a supervisor who had me fax the SS card along with proof of residence straight to her. She then took care of everything else, called me the 2nd business day & said I had been approved.

I applied today over the phone - and no way will I provide any of the above mentioned if asked. Not worth the hassle.

I have never heard of a credit card asking about utility bills and copy of ss card..

I believe they are trying to make sure you are who you say you are and live where you say you live. This can happen if someone has recently moved or if someone has a the same or very simular name to you and both come up on a SS search.

I was just going to say have either of you moved recently that were asked to provide an electric bill or SS card? Sometimes if you are living in a residence less tha 3 years, they will want some more information. :):):)

We've been at our current address for 3+ years. I think I will send them the phone bill and elec bill with a letter stating that I am uncomfortable providing a photo copy of my SS#. I will provide the # but not the actual copy. I will also state that if this does not suffice then we will choose not to do business with Bank One.

They didn't ask for that and we got ours. I don't think I feel comfortable providing that info either. It's not exactly the deal of the year here. We haven't even decided if it was worth using. Thinking it may be better to keep getting our air miles.

DH and I each applied for the card separately. His got kicked out by security because my first name is before his alphabetically. I sent in the info for him. There are about a zillion ways people can find out the same information. Anyone who has a student loan must realize that their account number is their SS#.

It's not that I have a problem giving the # out. The problem is giving an acutal COPY. There is a signature involved there. I guess it could be blacked out, but then would they accept an altered copy? There is no reason why they should need a copy.

Also a zillion ways to get your signature. Do you send out checks? What do you do with credit card receipts? What do the people do with the credit card receipts after you have signed?

It is a sad thing, but there is no true way to protect yourself from identity theft except to be vigilent in checking your credit reports.

When you apply for a mortgage you have to provide a copy of your SS card.

I applied for the card on 3/23 online. Today, 3/26 I received a phone call telling me that I was approved, and that the card will be in the mail within 10 days. No request for any additional paperwork. That was much faster than I expected!:):):)

I too would be very wary about this. Gosh, I have been hearing such strange things about getting approvals for this card.

Miss Jasmine, you are correct, there are many ways now to collect your information. But I have heard recently that the days of using the SS # as an identification may be limited due to the quickly growing problem of indentity theft. One of the prime ways that one can use someone else's identity is through the use of the SS #.

I would hope that less and less companies use the SS # for any identity information.

We just applied Monday online and got the phone call we are approved today. They didn't ask for any bills or ss cards from us either. You don't have to have your ss card when applying for a mortgage. We've moved several times and have never been asked for the card itself when getting our new mortgage. Just refinanced 2 weeks ago and weren't asked for it then either.

As far as I'm concerned, giving out the SS card is not worth getting the visa. There are plenty of other cards out there with rewards that do not require all this info. I'm not sure exactly all the other benefits besides 1% back the card will entail but I do know that 1% will just not add up to enough.

Well then I guess I have had different mortgage experiences. Both mortgages that DH and I have had (regular and then refi) required copies of our SS card. I am the information gatherer so I am quite aware of the requirments. Like I have also said, my student loan account numbers are my social security number. I understand that identity theft is a real problem. I keep track with credit reports and such. If someone wants to steal your identity they will no matter HOW safe you think you are being. :(

Everyone has a different comfort level. This didn't bother me so much since there are so many other ways for SS# and signatures to be discovered and used. I guess being a public employee and even having my salary records, address, phone number, etc. open to the public has made me really not care. :o

Now listen to this...

We just received our Disney Visa cards in the mail on Friday with a letter stating that the denial was incorrect. We actually never received a denial - just the letter asking for my bills and copy of my SS#. I was just going to bag the whole thing. What a pleasant surprise to get the cards.

There must have been a mass mailing Disneyolic, because we got our cards on Friday as well.

But here is the kicker - DH had already received a card a week or so ago but they never sent mine.

They said something about the first card being wrong and to destroy it.

I think that someone needs to get their act together.

We received two accounts and 2 cards with each. Called and cleared it up. Also rec a letter stating denial was incorrect. We never rec a denial just the letter for SS number and gas bill which I would not send. At least we have them and all is well.
