Disney VHS worth hanging onto, sell, give away???

I donated all of ours last June to a fundraising yard sale. My daughter discovered in October that our only copy of the Lion King was VHS and now gone. She will not let me forget that I donated her favorite movie (that hadn't been watched in years and it took more than four months for her to realize it was gone.) The Lion King was the theme of their high school marching band show this fall and I think that is why she wants it so badly. I told her it is slated to come out on dvd in time for Christmas 2011. Looks like I will hear about this for one more year. :)

VHS tapes are not an investment... even the Little Mermaid version with the filthy scene is worth NOTHING. Donate.

When we move I went through all our VHS and got rid of any that I also had on DVD. If I didn't have it on DVD I kept it.

It took all of a minute of searching to find 2 of those "worthless" Little Mermaid covers for sale on Ebay, around $7 each. That's not a lot but it's a lot more than the 0 to $1 you would get for a regular copy. As more people throw away existing copies because they think like you do the remaining ones will become more valuable due to the relative scarcity. They will never be considered a good investment but they will never be worthless either. If you have a copy you wish to donate to me I'll take it off your hands, one less piece of worthless clutter for you to worry about disposing.

Just because you're willing to pay $7 for a ridiculous cover to stuff into a closet (or, God forbid, display) doesn't make them worth anything, regardless of the price they are listed for. It's an old VHS cover... it's not gold, silver, fine bone china, or food. The display of disneyana (new, old or freaky) is NOT a recognized discipline of good interior design.

And, for the record, I donated all our videos (Disney, non-disney AND the Little Mermaid in question) to our local catholic charities. I'm hoping my estate can withstand the financial loss :rotfl:

:confused3 Filthy scene???

that's what I was wondering....we had the tape with the "filthy" cover but for the life of me I cannot remember anything about a filthy scene......

Many of the old VHS tapes are not copy protected, so we are copying them onto DVD as we find the time. We have a DVD/VHS recorder all in one and have been able to do this with old VHS tapes. Eventually, the VHS tapes will fade and/or break as they can get very brittle with age.

I am sure that Disney or other movie companies would not like this, but it saves the tape and gives us more room. After we have finished, we donate them to our local ARC or library.

We are also copying our old home movies this way. It has been fun to look at our kids 20 years ago! :thumbsup2

I'm glad to see you're so well versed in the fundamentals of of both Capitalism and interior design. I suggest you read up on the former and, for the latter, advise anyone who displays Disney memorabilia in their homes on the horrible faux paus they are guilty of.

You aren't the first person to get rid of something they were totally clueless about. Other people make a living off of people like yourself. Thanks for doing your part to keep them employed :worship:

I have that copy of Little Mermaid. Why keep it? I remember the big hoopla about the castle but does that make it worth something??
The cover makes it worth more than an edited cover, which isn't worth anything.

As for is something is worth anything or not...Something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.

As stated previously, I donate everything. I get a break on my taxes and the catholic church raises funds because people who are clueless about the real value of things pay $$$ for it. I thank you. The pope thanks you. Homeless people thank you. :)

You aren't the first person to hoard worthless items in the name of collecting, nor will you be the last. Having a particular copy of a movie doesn't make you part of some exclusive club... it just means there are more things for your kids to toss when you die!

There was no filthy scene, just a filthy cover. Part of dealing with people over the Internet is figuring out what they mean. I knew exactly what she meant and saw no reason to correct her on it. Back in the old days of UseNet they used to call that Netequitte.

A concept that works in exactly the same way whether it be gold or granola bars. Amazing that some people don't get it, isn't it?

Just chiming in on the "scene". When the priest is marrying Ariel and Eric, something of his gets bigger. It's very clear, and there's also the cover art. I have the original VHS purchased way back when I was a teen. It's true.

As for VHS tapes, most of my Disney ones are on VHS, which we watch quite a bit. I pick up the classics here and there for 50 cents instead of buying them for more on DVD (and no, my house is not full of clutter). If my VHS ever dies, I will be quite sad.

WOW :scared1: LOL I guess I better pop that LM VHS in and see if mine has that on it. :rotfl2:

My MIL is a librarian and she was just telling me her library no longer accepts VHS (or, I guess they do, but no one has donated one that they don't already have anymore).

She also said they couldn't find any place that would take them (shelters, goodwill, etc) so they all just go in the dumpster.

Good luck finding someplace to send them!

We picked up a old vcr for $3 at a yard sale, hooked it up to a TV in our garage, and bought just about every Disney movie on VHS for about 50 cents to a dollar. We hooked this up in my daughters room, and she has her own "movie theater" in her room, for pennies. She couldn't care less if they are high def or old school, just as long as there are princesses.

This is what I thought, and why I asked, I was confused.

Really?? I've never noticed that, I'll have to ask DD22 to review it for me. No matter how many times we watched it (she was a big Ariel fan as a little one) I never noticed that.....

Since there never actually was a "filthy scene" any DVD will do, no need to dig up a VHS tape. You can use the Snopes link referenced in the post above this and watch to see what they were talking about.

One of my coworker's husband worked as an animator on The Lion King. Because of what happened with The Little Mermaid they were the most scrutinized group in animation history :rotfl2:

There's a the difference. Using VHS tape media for their intended purpose provides entertainment value. The OP was wondering if she ought to hang on to hers even though she doesn't (or can't) watch them anymore. The more stuff we hang on to the less room there is for organizing... hence, clutter. Certainly no one is accusing you of having a cluttered home... but the mindset behind holding on to items we no longer use and the emotional attachments to them that cause people to scream, "It will be worth something someday!" or "I'm saving these for my kids!" are really interesting. Some people have a really hard time letting things go. No, we're not talking about family heirlooms which carry great sentimental significance like granddad's pocketwatch or mom's engagement ring... we're talking a video in a format that is quickly becoming obsolete and for which a player isn't available.
