I am neurotic when it comes to my furbabies. For this I apologize in advance.

My cat is blind due to complications with anesthsia during a dental cleaning.

So kitty is drooling and has bad breath again. I am terrified to let anyone touch him. We have a new vet, and an appointment for a checkup Feb 12. I know he needs his teeth addressed. I do not want him to have any more anesthesia, is there any other way to treat bad teeth? I dont want him to be in pain, but I am TERRIFIED. On the phone they just said bring him in and we can discuss it. I am going to worry until then.

Probably one of the best things you can do for your pet outside annual check-ups is to do at home care regularly. This includes the basics of combing/brushing them (will help you spot bumps/cuts etc. sooner), cutting their nails so they don't get caught on things and probably one of the most important that very few people do, brush their teeth. Yes, it can be hard to get your pet to like it, but it really helps a lot in keeping dental issues under control.

I am so sorry for you and your kitty. (((hugs)))

Was the complication due to the anesthesia or lack of oxygen during the cleaning? I was told my 6 year old cat had a stroke during a dental cleaning due to "a reaction to anesthesia." I nursed him back over months and months by feeding him slurry with a syringe. He seemed to recover nicely. After about five years he couldn't swallow any more. We did every test imaginable at the University of Missouri and an MRI showed the damage to his brain from the stroke. They did not believe that it was a reaction to the anesthesia, but rather the vet not paying attention and accidentally depriving my baby, Fox, of oxygen. Ultimately they never figured out why he couldn't swallow anymore but they figured that the muscles that began compensating after the stroke finally just gave out. We tried steroids and other things, but nothing worked.

I ask that because if it was neglignece, rather than some kind of reaction, and you trust the new vet, the benefits of the dental cleaning may outweigh the risks. Definitely worth an in office visit to discuss your options. Our vet offers IV fluids and extra monitoring if it is so desired. It costs more, but I am willing to pay that price. I'm still a nervous wreck every time one of my pets needs anesthesia but sometimes it is necessary, especially if they are in pain or have an infection.

the Ophtamologist suspected a lack of oxygen during anesthesia. I dont trust any vet now. The vet denied any wrong doing and said my cats vision problems were genetic and the timing was a coincidence. The opthamologist disagreed. I just moved to a new state and dont know anyone. My fiances coworker suggested this new vet, her sister is a receptionist there and promises they will take good care of my kitty.

I am hoping we can do antibiotics and the like and see if his mouth gets better. I am so afraid to put him under again, or his litter mate my other kitty.

After this happened a lot of people started telling me their horror stories about vet dental visits. Enough to really make you scared. A lot of elderly pets do not survive. My kitty is young, he just has yucky teeth.

Lulu your poor kitty! He was lucky to have a good family that took such good care of him. Poor little guy! It is so unfair sometimes what happens to them, and they cant speak for themselves to tell us. Hugs!

Thank you. I will be thinking of you and your kitty. I hope that the vet can find an alternative solution to a cleaning, though if they are in pain sometimes a cleaning/extractions is the only way to go to avoid other issues and to keep them eating. Please keep us posted.
