Can someone explain this to me? I read on their site, but it talks about points which really tells me nothing. What does it cost? What do you get out of it? We go to Disney about every other year and stay in a moderate resort. Would it be worth my time to look into it? Is it a better deal if you do it when you are at Disney?

Perhaps you should ask in the DVC-Operations forum... :)

Brief overview (I just purchased):

You buy a certain number of "points", which are allocated to you annually. Those points belong to a particular resort (you can potentially get points from different resorts, but that gets complicated) with which you can make reservations up to 11 months out, but you can book any DVC resort up to 7 months out, all subject to availability.

Each room type (studio, 1BR, etc.) and class (standard, preferred, etc.) costs a different number of points per night, and vary during the season, so depending on what days and what time of year, you use your points to book your stay in your desired room.

You can also trade your points for rooms at other Disney resorts (but its expensive), or other resorts around the world (through agreements with other timeshare organizations).

More questions can be answered in the DVC-Ops forum (where I think this thread may get moved...)

There is lots of valuable info on the DVC forum here on these boards. The cost of points varies depending on whether you buy them from Disney or buy them resale.

There are 3 things that made me buy a DVC. 1) Moderates are just a little better than value resorts, if crowds are an issue, they are for me. I still feel like a cow in a stampede. DVCs are real resorts, crowding is minimal. 2) I usually travel in a party of 5 to 6 people, I usually get two studios, which cost me 12 points a day per unit(a great value!). 3) Disney Dining Plan is only $37.99 per person per day, which includes tax and gratuity. This alone has saved me about $1500 and you have to be a DVC member or buy buy a complete package to get this. We don't cook when we go on vacation.
We go to Disney twice a year plus and I can go on and on about all the things I love about DVC, but for me these are my top 3 things I like the most.
Good Luck with your decision.

be aware that if you only go every other year, you can buy fewer than 150 pts if you go resale.

(most likely you'd also need to have the flexibility to stay in studio rooms and avoid Fri-Sat nights...but it's a consideration for some.)
