Tell us some trivia you know about Disney!

Something that you're not quite sure you know why you know it! :thumbsup2

I'll start.....

On top of the Haunted Mansion there are chess pieces - couple of pawns, rooks, kings, queens, etc. - decorating the roof like mini-towers. The chess pieces are there because the building's architect and attraction's chief designer loved chess. The reason there is no knight chess piece on the roof of the mansion is because it is always "night" inside the Haunted Mansion.

Some of this is debatable, but it's what I tell guests:

There are less than 12 water bridges in the world(where water goes over land) and there are 3 of these at WDW.

The contemporary hotel is where Richard Nixon gave his I am not a crook speech

Space mountain is actually taller than the castle, so they built it slightly into the ground so the castle would be the center point and tallest point in the park.

Hmmm ya got me on that one.

OK the road leading to the Contemporary is #1. Then if you go from the Boardwalk to the Beach Club that is #2.

Where is the third one?

Lessee... Walt's dog is in a few attractions. Do you know which ones they are?

Backstage at Epcot, it's near the Special Events building (behind World Showplace).

Did you know that every individual leaf on the Tree of Life is in its own pivoting socket? This allows the vinyl leaves to "flutter" in the breeze like a real tree.

These are going to be some interesting facts to learn about. I know nothing about WDW other then the whirlwind trip we made two years ago. I've read about 15 books on Disneyland, Walt, Behind the Scenes, etc, but y'all will have me beat on WDW.

Cool idea. :)

So start posting Disneyland Trivia!

Here's a factoid from across the pond.

The castle at Disneyland Paris is the only one of the Disney Castles that is actually made of stone. All the rest of them are steel and fiberglass.

Since Europeans have so many real castles available to see on a regular basis, it was decided to create the Paris castle out of real stones, and to make it the most "Fantasy" based castle.

Ok here's a few that I've always found fascinating. Not sure what people already know:

There is a half-court size basketball court in the top of the Matterhorn. There's actually lots of room in there, as it is mostly empty space within, surrounded by structural steel and a concrete skin.

When Disneyland first opened, there was a corset shop on Main Street, featuring a little show called the Wizard of Bras.

Attractions such as Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Carribean and Indiana Jones are actually outside (underground) the boundaries of the park.

The telegraph message that you'll hear tapping out when you enter the New Orleans Train Station is actually Walt's opening day speech.

Wild cats are allowed to roam the entire park, coming out only at night, to kill the rats which once infested much of the park. You'll actually see little bowls of food next to a small opening for shelters hidden behind bushes near some buildings.

I'm guessing they are attractions designed while Walt was alive, so...Carousel of Progress, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion?

The animatronic characters in Splash Mountain, except for the ones specific to the Song of the South storyline, originated in a Bicentennial attraction called "America Sings" which replaced Carousel of Progress at Disneyland when CoP was moved to Florida. America Sings starred Sam the Eagle, voiced by Burl Ives.

Here's my trivia ...

The Haunted Mansion is the only attraction located in a different land in each Disney park around the world ... Liberty Square (WDW), Fantasyland (TDL), New Orleans Square (DL) and Frontierland (DLRP).

I thought Walt had a poodle?

And word is that it'll be in Adventureland at Hong Kong's park when they get around to building it. :upsidedow

The same man and woman who sang Golden Dream, which is heard toward the finale of The American Adventure, came back over a decade later to record a slightly "tweaked" version of the same song for the updated version of the attraction.

I thought it made the attraction even more special because you could hear that the singers sounded slightly older. They were growing older as the attraction was growing older, which I felt gave it sentimental value.

:3dglasses

Ewww, creepy. :scared:

It makes sense, but sure is creepy.

I thought that too until I read in one of my Disney books how it all started. When Disney first opened, the Rivers of America attracted a large number of rats. Nothing was successful at removing them, especially since all the waterfowl the area attracts, was eating all of the rat poison. Plus, dead rats were seen floating in the river, scaring children.

That's when the feral cat idea came about. :) We've had a few of the kitties come up to our table at certain restaurants for a petting and a french fry.

Yikes, you're scarin' me now. :scared1:

That really is interestin', with the good comes the creepy. ::yes::

Ugh, I'm so mad I posted to the wrong thread.

Get one of the feral cats to poof it for ya. ;)

I don't know any trivia, but I love reading all of yours!! Keep 'em coming :]

I think this is pretty well known, but the actor providing the voice of "Uncle Wilbur" at Carousel of Progress ("No privacy at all..") is Mel Blanc, the voice of so many Warner Bros. characters.

Also, if you watch the final montage during the Great Movie Ride, you'll notice there are no clips from any Universal films.
