Disney Trip- anything but magical

Well we just returned from WDW/ SW/ UO. I must say that I was very disappointed in our return since October of 2005. For all the research we did suggesting this was a good time to go, there was wall to wall people, long wait times (even with fast pass).
For those who do care to read and can take something useful from this, that is the intent.

For starters, our hotel room at PO-FQ was ridiculous. While the grounds were beautifully landscaped, our room (bldg 6) had mold and mildew on the shower curtain, a few of the walls had some damage, and our tv did not work. It took the front desk 2 and a half days to fix the tv problem. Also the conceierge desk/ workers were extremely rude (on numerous occasions). After staying in AKL in 05, I would not go back to this hotel if there is a next time.

The shuttle bus pairing with Riverside is also a ridciouluos thing. The parks would almost wait until there were droves of people after closing to start sending buses. If you stay in FQ and were trying to get someplace quickly, forget it. You make 4 riverside stops. There were even a few instances in the later evening that we (FQ) were the last ones to be dropped off.

Next were the places we chose on the disney dining plan. We found that with most of the restuarants we chose, they would always stick us (my wife and I) in a table somewhere off in the corner where you couldn't see anything or where there was alot of activity of people walking by. I cannot enjoy a meal with constant activity standing near my table every 30 seconds. We chose Concourse steakhouse because it suggested you could see the monorail wisk by while you dined....nope not us- got stuck in the corner under a soffit. Couldn't see anything. The worst restaurant was Mama Melroses in MGM. This was by far the worst meal and worst service we had throughout the trip. They first seated us at a table closest to the lobby, so they would bring everyone by us to be seated. If that's not bad enough, the wait staff would use our "space" to stand there and discuss what tables they had open. Enough was enough and we requested to be moved. After we did (they obliged) we didn't see our waiter again until the end of the meal....no drink refills....no checking to see if we needed anything. He didn't deserve a 5% tip, less an 18% included with the meal plan.
Probably the best seating we had was at Coral Reef where they seated us next to the aquarium. The problem here was the parents- we had two different parents come down to our table, one kid elbowed my wife while we were trying to enjoy dinner. Not one parent offered an apology. This is just not acceptable behavior for adults.

My biggest gripe is the rudeness and lack of courtesy with the people in general. If someone was taking a picture, I would stop and allow them to shoot it. No one extended the same courtesy for me. Then you have the parents who tell there kids "it's ok" when they allow them to push and shove and impact someone even trying to take a picture. I don't blame the kids here- I blame the parents!!! Teach your kids courtesy- not reward rude behavior......that's the problem everywhere, not just disney.

The next thing that somewhat bothered me was all this talk about how they give away something for this year of million dreams. I actually stopped and asked a "cast member" how they go about doing this (thinking that they focus on parents/ families with kids and not couples). They actually confirmed that while the prize giveaways are random and random times, they do tend to look for families with kids. Goes to show couples are at a disadvantage.

Lastly, my biggest peeve and anger came about when we were waiting to see the spectromagic parade at MK. This was one of the must sees on my itinerary. As everyone was crowded behind the ropes, I somehow got muscled out by someone standing next to me and had to move out from behind the ropes.....well this happened near one of these security guards who was motioning people to keep moving. I explained to him that I was already in the ropes, he did not believe me and asked me to keep moving. So regardless (and I was fuming mad) I had to keep moving and missed the parade because there was no spot to move. I was so angry, we just ended up leaving the park.

UO, and SW were packed, but certainly more enjoyable than our long anticipated return to WDW.
After this trip, my wife and I will have to decide "if and when" we decide to return to WDW. I can assure that it will not certainly be in April. After having a magical time in 2005, this was by far the worst trip I could have hoped for.

If I wanted to experience rude people, I could have saved us thousands of dollars and planned a trip somewhere at a local theme park.
Oh yeah and a big shout out to the punk kid who felt the need to stick his hand in front of my camera while walking by as I was trying to take a picture- Come to NY and I will help you take care of that manners problem for you.

LOL! I know what you mean about the crowds...sometimes they get on your nerves but we find if you count to 3 and let it go the trip is much smoother! It's too bad you had such bad luck on your trip. We were there April 19 - 27th and couldn't have had better luck. Crowds were light, people were super friendly and the staff were on their a-game. When did you guys go?

I saw lots of dreams, my gf and I won something as well. I didn't see anything untoward here. I just think the majority of visitors are with kids so obviously a higher percentage of families are going to get something....

Sorry about everything that happened. Me and my dh were also there during Easter Week and it was very crowded. On our first day at Epcot it was so crowded I was actually scared and all my planning went out the window. I subscribed to Tour Guide Mike and after the 1st day, I was ready to call him and ask for my $18 back. But when I got back to our room, I settled down an reread some of my notes.
We stayed at POR-sorry but our room was clean, quiet and it was a standard room that looked over a garden view-which surprised me, I thought we would be looking at a parking lot.
I think the one thing I learned on this trip was to be at the Parks when they opened. When I told my dh we were done by 11:30 a.m.and I saw pretty much everything we wanted, he was elated. Our afternoons were spent swimming, or getting drinks around the world at Epcot, we did the mono-rail drink a thon too. We had a lot of ADR's too, but we made our ressie when the supper time started and we had some really nice tables. At BOMA the Chef even came out and chatted with us.

I'm sorry about the people with pictures walking in front of you, a few times my husband grabbed my shirt and pulled me back because I almost walked into people's pictures. I did take pictures of people that asked me too. My dh is a smoker, so I waited around for him-and somehow people just spotted me out and asked, "will you take our picture".

I do agree with you, I will never ever go to WDW during Spring Break or near Easter Time. If I hadn't made my dh get up early and hit the parks, he probably would of said the exact same things you said. Our daughter marched with her h.s. band right before the Spectro Parade on the Sat. before Easter at the MK. We went back to Frontierland and watched the parade in front of The Hall of Presidents. We saw our dd and after that, we basically gave up our front row seats to everyone else that pushed their way to the front.

With the Dreams-I would see groups of people with Mickeyhats or the Laynards, usually very early in the morning. I do agree it is false advertising on tv. Winning a Dream is like the lottery-chances were pretty slim.

Sorry you had a bad time
April and May can be packed due to spring break.
Sounds like you had a problem with the crowds.....
Try the off months like Septmeber-week before Thanksgiving and after Thanksgiving to Christams and early Januray-Late February (some crowded dates). October can be busy in EPCOT on weekends but in general but not crowded. The least crowded being September in general.

Thanks for the brief overview. I am sorry you didn't have the best time. Rude people, children in general, are expected. I agree, it is up to the parents to control them; however, many don't. I certainly understand why it was busy during the time you were there - April is a very busy time to be at Disney. Many families take this time to go to Disney, as well as youth groups from across the nation. I have also been in your situation, but I was more prepared. Just because it was busy and you experienced some acts of unkindness does not mean you should not consider returning to Walt Disney World. Perhaps, better planning would do. There are great websites, such as the DIS, that help determine the best times to go. One of these are www.*****************.

I have also experienced adults and children cutting in while I stop to take a photo. It is rather rude, and the adults just push the children through like it is not a problem. However, it is a problem - a large problem. I, like you, take the time to stop while others take the picture; however, I get nothing in return. Once, I was taking a picture and I asked if a child would wait ten seconds while I snapped the picture. While the kid was going to wait, the parent pushed her child right on through and I got an oh - so lovely picture of the back of her messed up 80s hair do! :rolleyes1

sorry you didn't have a magical time.
WDW gets busier every year I think. April is actually a pretty busy time as there are still lots of Spring Breakers.

well thanks for sympathy everyone....although I'm not looking for any. Most of you who have replied to my thread sound like the courteous type. If everyone were courteous it would be a great world to live in! Anyway, as for the planning- we did do our research and were informed through travel agents, frommers orlando guide, numerous disney related web sites that there was approximately a one week window at the end of april where the crowds were light (after spring break and after easter recess) and before the crowds started picking up in May and building into the summer months. It just didn't happen that way. The part of the trip that I think angered me the most was missing the parade because of the lousy security guards. From my profession, I can understand the need to keep aisles clear for fire safety and evacuation, however when we already had a place and he wouldn't let me go back in, that was just downright wrong. I pay my money just like anyone else to enjoy my once every two year vacation, and by darned if I don't get my money's worth, I'll gladly express my frustration.

My DH does that to me too. I'm not rude, just oblivious. :sad2: I'm short, too, so that may have something to do with my just not noticing a lot of things that he does; he has a bird's eye view and I don't!

Our only trip onsite was Christmas time in 2002. We didn't have such a magical time either, and when we left I didn't think we'd ever be back. The lines were long (of course) and our tempers were short and we had asked for a nonsmoking room and it smelled like smoke and there was mold/mildew in the bathroom and the room was too small for five of us and well, it just wasn't the best time.

Since getting back we never again discussed going to DW. Then my husband a few months ago out of the blue said "I'd go back to Disney World." I questioned him, said I thought he didn't have fun, etc. etc. and he said it wasn't so much Disney but just having us all together.

So...I started planning another trip and we are going back in September. This time TWO rooms so we can spread out more (and the kids are young adults now anyway), and we are going to give it another try.

OP, you need to just give yourself some time. You may decide to go back. You know from your October trip that things CAN be better. Just plan on October from now on. I know I'll never go at Christmas time again. Not worth it to me! Other people can have at it all they want but I won't be there!

I was there April 19-27th and found the crowds really light....We were at the parks everyday and never had to wait more than 20 minutes! The parades are always tough....I skip them for the most part unless we are in the right place at the right time! People are very aggressive along the route and I find it just feels wrong....I like to hit some rides as the lines are usually empty!

I think a common complaint is the lack of power that disney gives to the CM's. The heely's, smoking, line jumpers, etc all detract from the enjoyment of others and yet I rarely encountered a CM enforcing park rules.....

I can relate to the last-minute parade pushers for Spectromagic. I'm no
lightweight, so I defend my space whenever I can. If they try the "No speak
English" trick, just hold up a fist, shake it at them and say, "Do you speak
THIS?" ;)

As for the picture taking, I've been very conscious of stopping if I'm going
to walk between the shot. But I have to share how this became an
embarrassing story for me. Years ago, I was in the Town Expo Hall, and
I was walking around the back area. I thought I spotted someone on the
left side of my peripheral vision trying to take a photo.

It was a statue of a man taking a photo. :rotfl2:
I had jumped back and said "Excuse me" to a STATUE. Unfortunately,
my friend and some characters saw this and teased me about it. ;)

As for the Dreams, I can tell you now that they ARE completely random,
and it doesn't matter if you're solo, a couple, or a family. If the Dream Team
is told to watch a certain bench on Main Street and wait for the third person
to sit down between 10:00am and 10:15am, that's what they'll do. If
only two people sit down in that time frame, the prize will not be awarded.
There's an outside auditing firm that handles the assignments of the Dream
Team (or is it Dream Squad?) to keep things completely fair.

We've always gone in early November and the crowds are thin, the weather enjoyable but evidentally rudeness is year round as we experienced it too. We have not been back since Nov 2004. We splurged and stayed on site at POR and it sounded just like yours. They were in the midst of renovating but at those prices the rooms should at least be clean.

I'm sorry your Disney trip wasn't all you'd hoped it would be. We were there the week before you and the crowds were moderate or a little lighter than moderate. I always find people are much more rude when it's busy-mob mentality seems to take over. And you're right, it's not the kids, it's the pushy parents. There are too many people at Disney who don't seem to get that it's not a contest to get your own kid first in line at as many things as possible. I am a parent and, while I want my kids to get to do the things they have their hearts set on, I don't want them to intrude on others' enjoyment of their time at Disney, either. I had a "lady" at Spectromagic literally try to take my seat from under my butt! LOL We had a bench by the parade route, I stood up (dh, dd and ds still all on the bench) and she ran and sat there. When my dh said, "Ma'am, excuse me, that's my wife's seat," you know what she said? She said, "she wasn't sitting there or else I'd have sat on her." Nice!

As for the Dreams rewards, I hope I don't get flamed here but, some of those things should go to kids. I can see dream FPs for whomever but I kind of think the castle suite stay should be for kids. Every night a little girl should get to stay in the castle suite because, even though it would be a neat experience for anyone, you have to admit it's not the same as a 5-year-old who really believes she's spending the night in Cinderella's real live castle. JMHO.

Sorry to hear you had a lot of "not so magical" moments. We were just there from 4/16 - 4/22 and I was hating the crowds. It's funny because I think someone else in this thread was there around the same time and thought the crowds were fine. I thought the parks were hopping like mad. I found out that many New England states were on Spring break later in April. Lesson Learned.

We'll never go back unless it's one of the "low times" that have been tried and true. We're thinking early December '08 for our next time. If I'm going to take my kids out of school to go (like we did two weeks ago), then I want low crowds, not dealing with someone else's spring break. Shame on me for not doing more research before we went, but we also coupled our trip with a wedding we attended in Florida and I couldn't very well ask the couple to change the date of their nuptuals. :rotfl2:

Here's my trip report and in it you can read about how RANDOM we got Dream Fast Passes. It was really wild and we just lucked into them - read about them on Day #4 - Animal Kingdom. There's also a link on my blog to pictures where you can see a Dream Fastpass up close. :wizard: http://wdwapril07.blogspot.com/

We just returned Sunday from French Quarter. We did not like it either. It was just dirty. I've stayed at a lot of places in Disney, and I would have to say that this one was our least favorite. We waited forever for transportation as well. I did not like how mousekeeping left large, and I mean large towel carts in the walkway. Our room was musky and we all had little bites on our arms and legs when we would get up in the morning. I can say we were at the parks Friday-Sunday and the parks were packed and out of fast passes by mid afternoon.

We were just their April 21-29 and are also wondering if we will ever go back as it was not all they advertise it to be. I have had more fun at Hershey Park than I did all nine days at wdw. My whole life I dreamed of going to wdw and finally when I get the chance to get their it was not all I had always dreamed. We were told by a disney rep at the aaa open house in january that the best time to go was at the end of april or around xmas time so we figured we had picked a good week. well we get their and come to find out their was a cheerleading competion or some such thing at the wide world of sports complex as well as a bunch of hs seniors because of grad nights. so needless to say their were big crowds esp at mk. we were also told by the rep that spring break would be over with well that turned out not to be the case as their were a bunch of spring breakers still there as well. We took our two year old son with us so of course he had a stroller which everytime we would get in line for a ride we would make sure that we left it in the marked stroller area but still just about everytime we would come off from the ride or out of the show our stroller would be missing so we would spend time looking for it and then still not see it and go ask a cm who would tell us it was in one place only to get their and it not be there so we would ask another cm to be told finally where it was at which would usually be by a shop or food area of course. Most the time it would be far away from the ride we were actually on. (No where near the area we left it.) They are stroller happy around that place esp in mk. I have never experienced this at any other theme park except disney. Finally my husband had enough of it and went off on the one cm and to try to talk his way out of why they move them even when you put them in a stroller area he said well you have to remember this park was built in 1971 when strollers werent used. What century is he from if strollers did not exist in 1971. I have sisters and brothers that were born in the late sixties and funny enough my mom had a stroller for them lol. Go figure.
Also the transportation system does not work the best we spent a good bit of our trip waiting for buses to come. It was no 15 or 20 min wait like they advertise it was more like 30 mins and up and we were luckier than some that waited well over an hour for a bus. Some people even missed getting back to get their magical express bus to the airport even though they gave themselves well over an hour to get to POP from Downtown Disney. They spent an hour in line waiting for a bus before one finally came. Also the buses that run to the water parks they stop at the water park on the way and on the way back even though their was no one in line on their first pass through which wastes alot of time. We stood in line plenty of times and watched a few buses come to one line while we still hadnt gotten a single one as well. The other thing with transportation that we found to be stupid is that you would think that from the transportation center you should be able to get any mode of transport to anywhere on proberty right? WRONG! if all the theme parks are closed for the night you can not go to the transportation center to get a bus back to your resort or even to downtown disney you must go to another resort and get a bus their to downtown disney and from their get a bus to your resort. Their are no buses that run resort to resort or that run out of the transportation center after park closing. We learned this the hard way. Also we went and asked for a map of the transportation center or a schedule of some kind and were told they have nothing as the schedule is always changing their is no set one. At the least they could at least have something that tells you what mode of transport you need to get onto to get from place to place but they do not have this either. For example we wanted to go from Epcot to the Boardwalk without walking there from the back of Epcot and so we had no way of knowing how to do this without asking a bus driver who then told us we had to go back to where we had just left which was mgm by bus and get the ferry from there. Had we of had a map or some sort of information to tell us how to get from place to place we could have saved a lot of time and just gotten on a ferry from mgm without going to epcot first. Another thing we did not like was at MGM all of the show schedules are messed up and take forever to try to get through and the shows are long as well. You can't just get out of one show and move right onto the next one as they are spaced so far apart you have to wait an hour or more for the next show. I also agree with those that are complaining about the million dream giveaway as our whole time there we only saw one little boy with a million dream lanyard and didnt even hear any talk about anyone else winning anything. Personally I think this is a big scam just to get people into the parks. It sounds like they only give out cheap things as well and nothing like what is described on their tv adds. The hype in their adds in our experience was not reality. Also if you are paying over a 100 a night and up for a hotel room it is pathetic for them to be leaving you a card asking you to use your towels over. I do not do this at home and am not about to do it when I am paying that kind of money at a hotel. I have never had such a thing happen at any other hotel I have stayed at either here in the US or on my two week trip across Europe. So for Disney to do this I find very sad. Goes to show how cheap they are and what they are really after which is more money. It seems that is all they care about. I understand that at a tourist attraction you are going to pay more for goods but I never expected their prices to be as high as they were even other theme parks are cheaper than wdw. Everything at wdw is double or more of what you would pay elsewhere. 69 cents for two slices of bread is highway robbery not to mention 8 dollars for a small shot glass that at other tourist attractions you would only pay 4 or 5 for is pathetic. I do not believe this is the dream that Walt Disney had for his theme parks or his company. From what I have read and heard he wanted his parks to be affordable for families but I would not call 1000 a person for 8 nights affordable especially when you spend more time chasing down a stroller or waiting in lines for rides and buses than you do on any attraction. I have always my whole life been a disney fan and I collect all of there dvds and cookie jars amongst other things and after the way this trip went and the service we received I am questioning if I am going to buy their goods anymore as it seems to me they are all about the money and nothing else matters especially at their theme parks. The disney dining plan is a good deal but is not run fairly either as some people are able to get things that others are told are not allowed at the very same restaurant or for the very same item just at a different resort. They need to have a more consistant dining plan that is the same no matter where you are on property. If you can buy a thing of milk at one resort as a snack it should be the same at another. If someone can get an item for 4 at one place it should be the same for other people as well anywhere on property. Also they need to figure something better out for the 18 percent tip as not all waiters deserve this big of a tip and some deserve no tip at all as was our experience at the Sci- Fi. To be honest I would not have left any of the waiters that we had an 18 percent tip and esp the ones at the buffets as they are only brining you drinks. Then they also have the nerve to add on an 18 percent tip to anything that you are buying that is not on the dining plan. For example we purchased a childs meal for my son at the Sci- Fi since he is only two and we could not get the dining plan for him and they added on an 18 percent tip! They were already getting almost a $20.00 tip (which the waiter did not deserve as we waited forever for everything) for me and my husbands meal without adding more onto my sons bill. Which I do plan on writing a letter to the corporate office with my complaints from our trip to Disney this last week of which I do not think will get me very far but I want them to know how unhappy we are and we are not sure if we would ever give wdw another try after this experience.

Wow that was a long thread. Sorry to hear you had a worse time that we did! I did find amusing the part about the housekeeping leaving the card about re-using towels. I think it's probably a good idea to advocate re-using stuff, just to save on energy, water consumption, but regardless we didn't re-use anything.

I wish you good luck on your letter to corporate. Probably not going to get very far though. maybe they will send you a fast pass! lol.
If we ever return down the road, chances are my wife and i will have a child, so I will have to remember what you said about the strollers.

Oh yeah- in speaking of strollers- especially in MK was the worst with rude adults ramming strollers onto the heels of people in front of them. I went off on a woman after she clipped my heels 3 times under a minute!

Wow, I'm sorry BOTH of you had such a hard time!

You may want to give Disney another chance, if you think you can get past your negative experience. I would have to chalk both of your problems up to being at the wrong places at the wrong time and bad luck. We were there Easter week this year, and while it was crowded, we still had a great time! We did get there at opening, and leave midday for a break. We had a stroller, too, but never had too much of a hard time finding it.

Hope your next trip, if you come back, is so much better and you find the magic!

Sorry about your trip, I know some trips of ours had been really crowded (but never enough to ruin the magic!). :wizard: That being said, we know that certain times of the year we'll have that to deal with, a good idea is to do Universal during that time also, stay on site, it really is the most fabulous thing to go in front of the line with a real fast past, unlikely Disney's which IMO is pretty lamo. I hope this doesn't ruin it for you and you give Disney another try in a quieter time, or mix in a little Universal studios with it and stay on site, the front of the line is just the best thing in the world and it will lessen the stress the days you have the longer lines in Disneyworld! My husband who has little patience with lines anywhere (thinks 1-2 cars ahead of him in the gas station is an unbearable line hehe) and this works just magically for him! :yay:

Hey Disney is definitely not for everyone, thats for sure....thank goodness cause the crowds would be even worse! I was there 19th - 27th and have never had a more relaxed, easy going time. Very little waiting. Great cast members. No large crowds. But one persons idea of crowded is anothers nirvana.....
