Can someone give me all the info on trading pins? How it works? Where to get some to start? Thanks

if you go to the collectors board section on the main forum page, theres a few threads on pins/pin collection/where to buy etc.

bascially it started in i believe the year 2000 or 2001. the many pins that are out there can be bought at the parks/in disney stores, except in canada now, and yes on ebay(hot ticket debate on here tho!). when you go to the parks, you wear them on a pin lanyard/or some cm's wear them on fabric squares.lanyards are sold at parks and at the disney store. all the cm's wear them and will trade up to two pins with you on any day.

if a cm is wearing a green lanyard they will only trade witha child. pin trading is expensive, and one does have to be careful as fakes do circulate online. i started collection all those years ago, but keep them. this last trip i bought a started set at disneystore.com and then split them with my kids and the three of us traded. it was fun. i let them pick what they wanted.

I can't give you ALL the info, but I'll tell you what I know.

Most cast members at WDW have a lanyard or a pocket purse with different themed Disney pins on them. Once you have bought some DISNEY pins, you can trade with them. All you have to do is ask to look at their pins, and if you see one you like, you give them one of yours in trade for theirs.

Now, where to get your DISNEY pins? Some people get them on ebay and there are other "unofficial" sites where you can purchase them. We wanted to be sure we had genuine DISNEY pins, so I went to disneystore.com and purchased a set of 7 baby princess pins. This is what I gave to my SON to trade. I knew he wouldn't want to come home with any princesses, and he was fine with having these to start off. He enjoyed it so much, we bought another set while at the World.

You can also buy "starter sets" at the disneystore.com site that include the lanyard. We used an ordinary lanyard we had, but found it was a little smaller than the lanyards Disney sells. It still worked, but the pins "lay" better on the wider lanyards.

Have fun shopping and then trading!

I'm curious about this, too so I have a question. I have a set of Jungle Book pins that I got when I bought the dvd a few years ago. Would those work as pins to trade? I know my 4 year old won't care to keep them.

cant hurt to take with and try. im not sure, but i believe i have heard from friends it doesnt even have to be a disney pin- they'll take ones from home states/provinces. altho ive never seen this. if it was issued by disney via the movie i'd say you probably could. try it with a cast member you never know. also allt he resort gift shops sell started sets at reasonable prices.

Okay. Thanks. I'll try them and then they won't be collecting dust in storage.

Thanks for the link. I found my pins this morning. This is the set we have http://cgi.ebay.com/Adorable-Jungle...ltDomain_0?hash=item2305d0e2d3#ht_2213wt_1167

We're going to a Disney Store today and will be getting a lanyard.

you're lucky- our disney store got away from all pin stuff : ( wouldnt mind it so much if a i didnt have to pay insane rates for shipping and then duty once it arrives. think i'll just buy at the store at movies our first nite this time.

one thing to look into- get locking backs. its about 10 bucks for 8 or so. they come with a teeny wrench to tighten them. and keeps them on. they sell them online at disneystore.com and all the resorts as well.

I think the official rules say the pins need to say Disney on the back, although I believe some of the older ones Disney released don't so I could be misremembering. CMs will even take the scrapper pins (although the knowledgeable ones pocket them rather than putting them back into circulation), if the pin in question has the circled C and Disney on the back, so if yours have the name you should be good to go. :)

You are right. All Disney stores got rid of all pins and pin related things about a year ago according to the person I talked to today in our store. So... we'll just buy the lanyard when we get there. Or first day there is a half day and will be spent at Downtown anyway. We'll have time to shop.

These are official pins. Even the backings, which are in the shape of mouse ears, have "Disney" and the copyright symbol on them.

I agree with buying the pin locks also. The backs that come with the pins arent bad until you trade for a pin whose back has been taken on and off multiple times. And once your lanyard is full of pins;), it is harder to take on and off without worrying if a pin is going to come loose.
