Just read this, very interesting, it says they are to start testing them when the parks close, I wonder how long it will be before we all have to walk through them to gain access to the parks. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing, I think I will have to ponder on that one a little longer.

I found the story here www.local6.com (sorry don't know how to post the thread to the exact story, althouhg when I checked it was on the main page of this website)

I think metal detectors are a good idea-especially if they speed up the long lines to enter the park.

Does this mean that security guards won't be rummaging around in my purse, studying my allergy medication and dropping tampons all over the sidewalk?

Just kidding - they are pretty disney friendly, and I understand why they have to do it -- I just hate people going through my purse.

And they did drop tampons all over the place once -- you'd think I'd learn and straighten out my purse before going to the parks!:earseek:

I think that is a good idea..better safe than sorry in this day and age.

With the guests like myself who have Disney pins to trade on a vest and a pin trading bag, the metal detector will go balistic!

If the security becomes as tight at the parks as it is at airports, for me it would be more trouble than it is worth.

My mom has an extremely large metal hip replacement. We were held up at the airport for almost an hour while they scrutinized this (then) 78 yo woman, even with a doctors notice about the replacement. Since the sheer size of the parks mean we have to use a wheelchair...that much more hassle and delay. I feel no more or less safe in the parks because of the current open bag checks, and will feel no more "secure" if metal detectors are implemented.

A metal detector will not stop a determined terrorist.

Im just not sure how this is going to work.

On a typical day I've got a camcorder, at least one still camera, a PDA, a radio, often a cell phone, piles of pennies and quarters, spare batteries for everything, car keys and heaven knows what else that would set off a metal detector.

Today - as long as I've got it all either hanging over my shoulder or stuffed in the thirty-two pockets of the fishing vest I use when I visit WDW - I can simply walk right past the line waiting to get their bags checked.

Tomorrow - am I going to need to empty all those pockets???

But it may stop a stupid one. What I mean is, if UBL were to specifically target WDW, Disney's security methods could not stop it. But it could stop a fanatic with a gun who wanted to make the national news.

Metal detectors wouldn't necessarily stop that, either. If someone simply wanted to make a name on the news, they'd simply "do the deed" outside of the security perimeters. Do you the think the current metal detectors inside an airport would stop some idiot or zealot from killing someone at an airport?

They showed the metal dectectors on the news last night and the lines looked FOREVER long because of them. :earseek:

Door locks don't prevent break-ins. They keep honest people honest. Bottom line is that no security measure is fool proof and virtually all measure provide some measure of customer inconvience. We live in an age where profiling is a major taboo so people who are obviously no threat are treated as though they are. There are no easy answers. I think metal detectors are much more effective then the current "search" method they have in place now. If the amount of junk I choose to bring into the park is too big a hassle at the gate, I have two options: Grin & bear it, or leave the junk home. If I let the security measure bother me to the point of saying I'll just stay home, then I've let the terorist win without a fight.

As some one who is in the security industry any detection measure is only as good as the people who use it. No amount of technology can makeup for a poorly trained operator even the Feds know that look at the TSA.

This is my point exactly anyone else remember seeing the “bomb vest” found in Iraq.

I don’t know if there is any security measure that would work but having said that any thing is better than nothing

It's a sad day when they have to install metal detectors in WDW. I thought it was supposed to be the happiest place on earth. Don't get me wrong I would rather be safe then sorry but did you ever think you would see the day when you have to worry about terrorists in Disney?

Chuck S-bring an x-ray of your moms metal replacement hip. I know it's a hassle to bring everywhere there is a metal detector but it speeds up the process

Has anyone but me noticed that they don't search bags at any of the minor parks? Just the big 4...

Now, if I was a terrorist & wanted to bomb people at WDW (or DL, for that matter), first it'd be easy to sneek equipement past the guards, and second, I could just bring a bomb in a cooler and leave it at one of the water parks. I'm sure the headlines would be just as spectacular.

Give me a break, you can just throw a gun to someone over the fence. Metal detectors work when there is only a few entrances to a space. They won't make the park any safer, only make people feel safer, the same way they work at airports.

We check coolers at the water parks. But not bags, And we are mostly checking for glass bottles and alcohol. They did have bag checks at the water parks for a short time.

dropping tampons all over the sidewalk?...........you'd think I'd learn and straighten out my purse before going to the parks!

 :rotfl:  :rotfl:
I always get the guy that makes me open that little zippered part inside my bag!!!

Hey...auntpolly.........how are you enjoying the warmer weather!!! :teeth:
Finally....huh? :teeth:
every one on the street is mowing their grass.....GREAT, ISN'T IT!!!:teeth:

For your enjoyment we suggest you arrive two hours prior to your anticipated entry into the park.

LOL!
As I remember, a few years ago at least at Fiesta Texas, they did both the bag check and the metal detector thing.

Maybe if the metal detectors work, we can start frisking people too. Maybe some strip searches, or some body cavity searches would do the trick.

I guess it's just me, but I think it's all getting out of hand. No matter what you do, someone will still find a way around it if they want to.
