Disney to eliminate plastic straws, hotel in-room plastics and plastic shopping bags

Just pondering here, but they could go to the refillable mug system that Universal has. With the refill stations actually in the parks.

I have never had a mug from Disney but Universal’s has a lid and plastic straw attached. So nothing to throw away at all. Of course you can’t require everyone to buy one but the mugs they have are pretty popular it seems.

If I was going with the grands, I would certainly buy mugs like that either one for everyone or a couple to share.
I wouldn’t even use a straw for a refillable mug so that’s a good idea in the parks. Only thing would be at table service restaurants they wouldn’t likely fill them for sanitary reasons.

Re: Reusable bags= You can buy ones that fold down really small. I keep 1-2 in my travel day bag. Saved my bacon many times.

And speaking from experience - unless you're using a collapsible/foldable straw, they don't fit in bathroom sinks so washing or even rinsing them that way is really awkward. You can't get them under the faucet without the other end dragging on the bottom/side of the sink. At the resorts, the mug wash stations would work for cleaning them, but I'm not sure how someone who wants to clean it between uses could easily do so in the parks.

Yeah, that doesn’t sound super practical. It seems like people bringing in their own paper straws (if they want to be environmentally conscious) is probably the way to go for an all day outing like Disney.

Right. Don't you answer the door from inside your hotel room?

Pretty sure you can't parade naked in front of the windows with the curtains wide open, either. Even though you are "inside" your hotel room, you are still considered to be exposing yourself.

I was at Pop last spring and the room checks only annoyed us once - they called, during our nap and we ignored them. So then they came by and knocked. Which definitely interrupted our nap.

Lesson for the future - don't ignore midday calls. We then left a note at the desk asking not to be disturbed between 1 and 4pm, and we weren't. No more calls, no more checks (except presumably when we were out of the room).

No staff member will barge in on you (nor could they, if you engage the door chain). But harassing staff over a policy they have no personal input into or control over is definitely rude, especially if your form of "protest" is answering the door in the nude in the hopes that your naked body will be viewed by staff as shocking or threatening in some way.

if someone intentionally opened the door while in a state of undress, as that poster claims they would, perhaps a case could be made. Even more so if it turned out it was not the room check knocking, but a lost child who thought they had their own room or something.

Even if not, Disney would have every right to not let someone who did that any time they did a room check book a hotel with them again. That said, this is another issue which I think people think will be far bigger than it really is. I bet very few people will actually be in their rooms and even aware of such a check taking place in order to make a fuss.

If you read the thread about this on the resort board, it's actually happened to quite a few people.

This is actually a great idea. I don't know why Disney hasn't done this yet.

I suspect that what we will see will be the "sippy lids" that are usually provided with coffee cups. Uncovered soft drinks in Central Florida will draw more stinging insects into the parks, and they won't want that, not to mention that spills of so many uncovered drinks would create a need for a lot of add'l cleaning.

To people who didn't bother to use the latch. Which takes less than a second to engage. And I wouldn't call it "quite a few".

You call it what you want and so will I. Makes no difference to me because I don't stay on Disney property anyway.

We're going to get rid of plastic straws to save the environment so we will give you your drink with a new and improved sippy lid made from, you guessed it, plastic. But we can all rest easy, because surely they won't end up floating in the ocean somewhere like the straws would have. :rolleyes1

Well -
A) Right now, the drinks come with lids and straws, so just lids would be one step better
and -
B) the lids are much bigger around than the straws, so much less likely to fit in small animals' mouths and get caught.

Like I said, straws are the devil. :rotfl2: If you use a plastic straw, you are responsible for the death of the planet and Armageddon will be all on you. And if you bring & use your own reusable straw, then you will get necrotizing fasciitis, MRSA, E. Coli, or some other deadly infection which will kill you because you touched someone who didn't wash their hands before eating chips out of the communal chip bag and you will then touch your straw and infect yourself.

Or you'll infect yourself with deadly bacteria from the chickens that you're raising in your suburban backyard. You'll forget to wash your hands thoroughly enough and then you'll touch that reusable straw which you only rinsed out with hot water and you'll infect yourself that way. When in reality, anything that touches your lips should be boiled in hot water for 3 minutes. No more eating anything with your hands. Everything must be eaten with some sort of utensil. Unless it's a straw. Straws will kill you.

I think that the only safe way to interact with your environment now is to become a breatharian, where you are like an air fern and you get all of your nutrients from osmosis through the air around you.
