Disney to build Art of Animation resort

This makes me quite happy. I'm glad to see they are creating more non-DVC family accomodations and they are finally doing something with the buildings that have been sitting unused for all this time.

I like the addition, i just wonder why they are not finishing it as Pop. They must have thought that this theme would go over better.

Glad to see that Disney is planning on adding more family suites. Makes sense. However, I also wonder why they abandoned the 'Legendary Years' theming.:confused3:confused3

Think of it as a new product to sell. Pop already has 2800 rooms. Using the existing unfinished Pop buildings will give Disney the ability to sell a new product. People like to try new things.

There have been many signs of an improving economy down here in Central Florida. It may take another year or two but we're on the right road.

I can imagine the queues to board the Pop Century/Art of Animation busses now. You KNOW they will combine the busses to both resorts during the slow mid-day periods!

As an adult in a family with 3 kids, this is a much needed and welcomed addition. Those of us not in DVC and who can not or do not want to spend on Deluxe suites need more variety and options and this serves that need. The article speaks to Disney recognizing that the traveling family is larger and is looking for more value now, and seems like they are reacting well to that.

Bravo to them

This will be interesting to follow..

I wonder if they will call them value resort suites or if they will upgrade them to moderate... Time will tell.

I know, this is the only negative! I hope they don't, but I bet they do. I love a nice, half empty bus in the afternoon!

Thanks for the link, the resort sounds very cool. The economy aside, it's also another way to get more people on property. Sounds like Disney finally figured out they were losing alot of families who decided to stay off property due to most of their non-Deluxe rooms only accomodating 4 people. So many hotels have the big suite rooms now, I don't think Disney had any choice but to finally build this kind of hotel.

For it to be categorized as a moderate, they'd have to have a sit down restaurant, etc.

Disney has said on their official blog that it's definitely going to stay a Value resort.

I think it's pretty exciting! I want to go stay in the Lion King area!

I'm glad to see them finally doing something with those buildings. I always felt it was pretty bad show to have them just sitting there half built.

Of course. I still feel the pain of the Swan/Dolphin/Yacht/Beach/Boardwalk route to and from Downtown Disney after dark. At least at "slow" park times, they split the route with Yacht/Beach getting the split route.

At the very least, it will be nice if/when they'll have full access of the Hourglass Lake bridge between resorts.

I think the reason the Legendary sat there for so long was due to 9/11. If people recall, they had to close down Port Orleans French Quarter for a long time because of major decline in travel after 9/11. Just as there was a recovery, the economic crash happened, resulting in those deep discounts last year. Not a good time to have lots of empty rooms.

I'm surprised they're announcing doing this when Disney is still offering discounts and dining incentives to put heads in beds. Maybe there's a demand for the family suites.

really looking forward to seeing this all come together!

It is nice to see them finishing that side of the resort and adding family suites. I was hoping they would finish that side of the resort with the current theming (1900-1940). They could have still made them suites but an Art of Animation theme is better then the current theme of abandoned nuclear testing site.

ETA: Ok, they are re-theming the entire resort, not just the new section, according to Jim's article. I am happier now. Having it half Pop culture and half animation would have seemed a bit disconnected. Having it all one theme or the other makes sense. I love Pop, it is my favorite of the values, but a different theme wouldn't make me like it any less, at least not an animation theme.
