Disney to announce cruise itinerary

Tim Barker | Sentinel Staff Writer Posted March 18, 2006

Disney Cruise Line will announce plans next week for a new summer itinerary for its Disney Magic ship.

The company won't say where the ship -- which spent time last summer on the West Coast -- will be sailing until the Tuesday announcement.

"There are a lot of rumors about where we are going to go next," said spokeswoman Rena Langley.

Much of that speculation actually has been created by Disney, which has listed Alaska, Hawaii, the Mediterranean and the South China Sea among the options.

During the past couple of summers, Disney has made a habit of using its two ships -- the Disney Wonder is the sister ship of the Magic -- for unique cruise offerings.

The summer of 2005 saw the Magic operating out of the Port of Los Angeles as part of the company's 50th anniversary celebration for Disneyland. This summer, the Wonder will offer its first 10- and 11-night cruises in the Southern Caribbean, while the Magic will offer trips into the Western Caribbean.

One longtime Disney observer is convinced the 2007 itinerary will be a European cruise based out of the Mediterranean.

Mary Waring runs Mousesavers.com, an Internet site dedicated to helping people find Disney discounts.

It would be a natural move to operate in Europe, in order to bolster attendance at Disneyland Resort Paris and to get closer to overseas customers, she said.

"There are a lot of Europeans who would love to do the cruise but don't want to come over here to do it," Waring said.

Everything I have heard so far points to the Mediterranean or at least the European travel agencies all seem to think that is the new destination.

I agree with this. Also the exchange rate is favorable to make money in Euros right now

Disney Magic to sail the Mediterranean

Disney Cruise Line announced this morning that its Disney Magic ship will sail the Mediterranean in summer 2007.

The ship, which spent last summer on the West Coast, will make stops in European locales including Barcelona, the French Riviera and Naples, Italy.

Tom McAlpin, president of the Cruise Line, said the locations were some of the top ones mentioned by people surveyed by Disney. He said the itineraries, which include 10- and 11-night cruises out of Barcelona, make it possible for families to take a European vacation without the hassle.

The Magic, whose homeport is Brevard county's Port Canaveral, will sail 14-night east and west transatlantic crossings to reposition the ship before and after its Mediterranean cruises.

Disney Magic cruises from Spain next year

Disney Cruise Line today announced that it will offer cruises in Europe in the summer of 2007 on the Disney Magic, which normally is based at Port Canaveral.

The ship will offer cruises from Barcelona, Spain, with stops in Italy and France, home to Disneyland Resort Paris, which is partially owned by The Walt Disney Co.

In May 2007, the Disney Magic will sail a 14-day trans-Atlantic cruise from Port Canaveral to Barcelona. The Magic then will sail alternating 10- and 11-night cruises to eight ports of call in Italy and France. It will return in August 2007 to Port Canaveral with another trans-Atlantic cruise departing from Barcelona.

"We have not found any cruise that is not better for adults and this will be very exciting," said Barb Nefer Lesniak, an admitted "Disney cruise fan" who lives in Celebration.

"I have done 49 Disney Cruises, and we want to try this one to," she said.

Disney Cruise Line President Tom McAlpin said the newest itinerary is a result of customer demand.

"The beauty of Disney Cruise Line is its flexibility," McAlpin said. "As you know, last year, we repositioned the Magic to the West Coast, and that helped us accomplish two things. It helped us test the water to determine the demand of Disney Cruise Line in a new market. And, two, it gave our repeat guests a new place to explore with Disney Cruise Line."

Last summer, the Magic repositioned to the Port of Los Angeles in conjunction with the 50th-anniversary celebration of Disneyland. From there, it offered seven-day cruises to the Mexican Riviera, including Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta.

The Magic's sister ship, the Disney Wonder, will continue sailing out of Port Canaveral while the Magic is in Europe.

They already have prices up on the website, but will begin booking 4/4. I heard they had a waitlist of about 400, and they are now calling those people to see if they are still interested.
For those of you who are seriously considering these cruises, you might want to call early on Tuesday (at opening) to ensure you get a less expensive rate. Hope this helps.
