Disney Store Discount Coming Back?

Merry Christmas to all! Still waiting for our DD to wake up so I got on the computer to check the latest boards and to ask a question. During a vistit yesterday afternoon to the Disney Store in Independence, Missouri. I asked a CM about the elimination of the DVC members store discount (we used to get 10% when showing our cards). She said that a lawsuit was or had been filed on behalf of DVC members to get the discount back; since it was a part of our contract, it must still be honored. Has anyone heard of this? I hope it goes through.

I wouldn't doubt the lawsuit, but I would doubt its chances of success. Our contract was for the purchase of an ownership interest in a real estate property. Fringe benefits and such, other than the park pass incentive for those who purchased in the first few years of the timeshare, were subject to change without notice. That doesn't mean Disney won't offer a new promotion for DVC members that involves purchase of Disney-branded merchandise, but that it would likely not be due to any obligation it was found Disney had.

Regardless, Disney doesn't own The Disney Store any longer. The entire chain was purchased a year or so ago by Children's Place. They have license to use the Disney name on their stores, but are otherwise not associated with Disney.

From what I've been hearing, Disney forbade Children's place from offering the discount.

Not for certain but given that Disney has been very obstinate with the children's place regarding all type of logo issues, I'd assume it's related.

FWIW...

I think since the buyout the merchandise is severely lacking in the Disney Store. I would not be surprised if they go out of buisness soon. I used to be a CM at TDS prior to the buyout so I know the different quality of merchandise.

Locally, we had 2 stores in 2 different malls although they were about 30 miles apart. I heard from someone the other day that one of them closed prior to Christmas. I talked to a CM manager at a disney store outlet at huge outlet mall and even she said the same thing. She has been working for TDS for 6 years and she was very glum when I was in there for Christmas. Her exact words were..."The merchandise has really changed".

The good stuff direct from Disney can all be purchased online through Disney online or through the catalog. TDS are no longer accepting returns from online or catalog because they are no longer owned by the same company.

Just my 2 cents

To be fair, I would go into the Disney Store quite a lot, check out all the quality merchandise, and then walk out without buying anything. After the first couple of years, the attraction wore off, and it just wasn't worth the premium for high-quality logowear. If I'm indicative of the general public (which, according to AC Neilsen, I am), there really wasn't much sense in continuing to offer what amounted to basically a venue for window-shopping.

When we first purchased DVC, TDS had leather jackets, nice embroidered shirts, kitchen ware, etc, etc, and I purchased quite a lot of it. Now I can't find one thing in there I would actually buy. I don't miss the discount at all.

We were in a Disney store in San Antonio recently (we lost ours several years ago). My impression was Disney meets Dollar General Store.

Good analogy, Dean. The one at the Mall of America remodled and reopened just before the Holiday shopping period. They took out the beautiful Mickey terazzo that was in front, took out all the cool Disney sets, and have some cheesy cardboard cutouts of disney characters for decor. Truly did look like a cheap discount place.

My wife and I love Children's place for our youngster's clothing. It's dirt cheap so that we don't feel bad if they mess up with day to day activity (with $100, you can get a big bag full of clothes); however, we never go to Children't Place for any clothing that we expect it to last or for quality.

I think it was a big mistake for Disney selling its name to cheap clothing store. Many people now will equate
Disney Product = Children't Place product
Children't Place Product = low quality product
Therefore
Disney Product = Low Quality Product

Now we only buy Disney product when we visit "home".

Instead of TDS discount (which I don't miss a bit), I prefer to get World of Disney Store discount.
