Disney Store closings?

It's just something I've seen around. I live in Michigan and a lot of our stores closed. I think we only have two in the state now and I heard of a few other stores closing over the past couple of months.

i'm originally from Michigan (bloomfield hills to be specific)...
i was just home visiting in june and was shocked to see the one in somerset was gone...
but then i was at great lakes crossing the next day and they have a brand new one there that was just opened a few months ago (unfortunately replacing one of my favorite great lakes crossing stores - jockey :sad1: )...

when i was at somerset i didn't ask anyone why it was gone - if it was moving to another spot in the mall, or something like that...

i had only popped in to see if the walleye merchandise was out yet...(this was a week before the movie came out)..

anyway, the point is that while there was one closed, there was a brand new one only a few miles away....

There's fishing merchandise????:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I'm guessing your spell-check switched it on ya...unless there's a new movie I hadn't heard about.

well i could blame the spell checker...'cept i don't have one on this computer...

hey, the movie only opened here last night....we're planning on seeing it tomorrow night...(no way would i EVER go to the movies on a saturday night....craaaaaaaazy crowded...)

I went to 12 Oaks Mall just yesterday Beth and it was gone. I was about to cry because I brought $80 with me just to spend there!!
Isn't or wasn't there a big one in Chicago?
I know there's one in NYC but I can't wait until November to get my Dis on for 3 hours.

i rarely go to 12 oaks.....somerset is much closer to where my family lives...
so when i'm in the area visiting it's either somerset or great lakes...

the new disney store at great lakes crossing is about the size the store was at somerset....though i didn't really look around....i immediately asked a salesperson if the merchandise was out yet (it wasn't)...

if you live near 12 oaks, then great lakes crossing will be a trek for you.....it's just past the palace of auburn hills - i think it's 2 exits later on I-75...
(from my parents house i just go to square lake road, enter I-75 at square lake, drive north on I-75 for about 8 miles and i'm there....it's worth the drive)...

have you ever been there?....very different from 12 oaks....but it's nice in it's own way...much more of an outlet sort of place (you can get some nice deals there)...and it's the only mall with a sports authority near my family...

I haven't been there in nearly 4 years. It's about 60 miles from my house and with gas prices...it's like going to Frankenmuth or Cedar Point. But now I'm going to have to make a trek out there before classes start up or before I head down to Orlando for six months. lol

oh my!! 60 miles?!!!??....wow....that is FAR....
in that case, no it's not worth it....way too far to drive just for a mall...
even for one with a disney store...

save up the gas for a trip to cedar point :woohoo: :woohoo:

or save up the money that you don't spend on the gas for a trip to the real mickey.....:cheer2: :cheer2:

For sure! lol
I should. I'm doing the internship at WDW in the spring. So the more money I have to spend at WOD the better!! ^_^

:sad1: They closed one Disney Store in our area. Luckily, we are still close to one store and one outlet. I believe the transfer of ownership from The Children's Place back to Disney is now complete. I'm curious how that will change the merchandise in the stores. I sure hope they have more adult clothing options and better variety for boys. There was ALWAYS more clothing for my DD5 than my sons in the old stores under TCP.

Retail if I can't get into the show biz aspect of the resort. :cutie:

my daughter auditioned at WDW 2 years ago....over the course of a couple of months...they wanted her to work there (as an actor / singer), but then she decided she didn't want to live in orlando....but she was thrilled they wanted her...

she said that the people who run the auditions at WDW are the nicest people you can imagine...much much much much nicer than typical auditions (at non-disney places)...

I didn’t read through the entire post so if I repeat anyone I am sorry.

On May 1 of this year Disney bought back 220 of the Disney stores and will operate them under Disney Consumer Products. There were 98 locations that were not re-purchased and those will close. At the licensing international expo Andrew Mooney, the chairman of Disney consumer products, said he wants to revitalize the brand (which once boasted a profit of $600 per square foot of selling space) and is hoping that re-introducing scarcity into the brand will help with that goal. Here are some of his quotes:

“Unfortunately, the only way to achieve uniqueness & specialness(sic) in today's marketplace is to actively cut back of the number of Disney Stores that you find in
North America. ”

“But if you can just look at the bigger picture here ... With far fewer units in this retail chain and a renewed emphasis on Guest Service, the Disney Stores that remain open will now seem like that far more special places to shop.”

Disney will have much more control over the product that will be placed in the stores now that they own the chain. Here’s hoping that the added scarcity and customer focused business model will increase everyone’s experience.

I got much of this information from Jim Hill’s website so I want to give him credit.

Years ago I used to get all these nice character figurines at the Disney Store. It definitely used to have more things to appeal to collectors and not just to kids. Even the look of the store itself changed for the worse. The only thing I buy there now is stuff for my 18 month old daughter.

If I recall, Syracuse was one of the only stores on the Upstate NY Thruway corridor to keep its Disney Store and it happens to be at an expanding mall with great highway access.

We're excited that the store stayed open and will be hopefully reinvigorated with higher quality Disney merchandise.

I believe it! I have a double major in pre-law and theatre arts and since I don't think they'd let me do anything there legal without actually being in law school yet, I'm trying to do theatre stuff there. But I'll be just peachy doing anything for the Almighty Mickey.

Alright, I went to Canada a few months ago, saw a Dis Store, and asked the GM. She said only the North American ones were closing and none in Canada had been scheduled to close as of May 9th.

go to the auditions - even if just for the experience...the schedule is listed online..

they also offer sessions (for free i think) to help you improve your auditions..

and my daughter told me that when you audition, they make suggestions for ways to improve for the next time..

she said they're totally incredible...and always make you feel good about yourself...
