Disney Store closings?

really???? where is the disney outlet in charlotte??? *runs off to investigate*

:moped:

Sorry, didn't specify where, did I? Concord Mills mall in Concord. The new Disney uotlet is where the Children's Place outlet was (they have opened up a new store across the hall).

I worked at The Disney Store before, during and after the transition to Hoop Retail Group. We were lucky enough to have a District Manager willing to share information about the negotiations with us.

First, while The Disney Stores are owned by Hoop Retail (also owners of The Children's Place), the World of Disney Stores are still owned by Disney. That's why the HUGE difference in the mix and quality of merchandise.

Also, as part of their agreement, Hoop decides on the mix of merchandise, based on what their corporate direction is and what they think will sell. But, included in the licensing part of the agreement is a clause that requires Hoop to provide symbiotic support to Disney vehicles. i.e. they were required to carry a specific amount of Enchanted merchandise before, during and after the movie's release.

Hoop has dabbled in items for adults, the home, collectibles. But, without much success. Since the stores have not carried these items for quite some time, there isn't much of a market for these lines. Without advertising, no one knows they are there (plus, on the stage sets, they tend to be towards the back and to the side of the stores - not exactly prime placement). Usually, these lines have to be sold on clearance at very little margin or at a loss. I would be SHOCKED if they expanded these lines further.

Remember, that kids cr** has a VERY high profit margin. It can be made for pennies on the dollar and is often sold at retail or a slight discount. Hoop Retail's expertise is in children's soft lines. Thus, you will always see clothing prominently displayed at the front of the store...with toys and accessories sprinkled in for good measure.

Finally, when Hoop took over the stores, they issued a statement that they would NOT be closing any more stores - in fact they planned to open over a hundred new stores within five years after the purchase. That was important because, before Eisner stepped down, in an effort to make the stores more attractive to a potential buyer (they had been for sale for almost two years before Hoop Retail bit) a few hundred of the less profitable stores were closed. Ours in Davenport is the very last store in the entire state of Iowa. The fact that Hoop has begun closing stores after only a few short years is a VERY bad sign.

There have been recent rumors cropping up that Disney has been disappointed in how the stores are perceived since the takeover. To the general public who are not obsessed with all things Disney, the stores are still Disney. They sense that something is "different" but cant put their finger on what that is. I'm hearing that Disney has been reviewing the terms of their agreement with Hoop Retail. What that means - I have no idea.

All but one of our TDS CMs quit after our store got a new manager. She came from Gymboree and does NOT embody the Disney Magic - can you spell B****? Not the store is staffed by kids with facial piercings, wacky makeup, multi-colored hair, etc. They definately don't meet the Disney dress code! I've heard language come out of their mouths that made me want to find a bar of soap.

We're all praying that the rumors have some basis in fact and they Disney decides to buy back the stores that remain open. Hey, we can dream...can't we?

OK - I admit it, this topic is very near and dear to my heart. The TDS CMs became like family to me. We shared a passion for all things Disney and supported each other through good times and bad.

Thanks for you input and info -

We can only hope that Disney will take The Disney Stores back
and save them from the Hoop disasters !

:cool1:

I personally think the reason the adult merchandise/home products don't sell very well is because it's priced way too high. Plus some of the t-shirts were such a poor quality we wouldn't even consider buying them (they were not very soft and for us, the sizing is kind of weird).

thanks for the heads up- didnt even realize this had opened!! i always shop at the one at carolina place mall, and lately there is NOTHING in there but childrens clothes :( ill have to check this out- thanks again!

yeah, I used to buy my sister really nice snow globes and collectors plates and things of that nature for christmas.

I loved when they carried snowglobes. :sad2: I guess I am lucky we have a Disney Outlet 15 mins from our house and a Disney Store in a regular mall about 40 mins away. I use to visit out Disney Outlet religiously but ever since the change it just seems to lack the magic. And I agree with the poster that said the employees do not fit Disney standards :sad2

Does Disney control the merchandise the store carries, or is it the Children's Place? I know they don't own the stores anymore.:confused3

Yes, to both...

Disney gave The Childrens Place a license to use their trademarked charcters on lines of clothing made by TCP for The Disney Store, and to sell theme park tickets and associated merchandise as a means of bringing-in those customers who might give otherwise TDS a pass (and buy some of the same toys, etc. at Wal-Mart, or another mass merchandiser).

That, IMO, is pretty much where it began and ended.

If you buy apparel at TDS, you'll notice the inside tag says "Disney Store" meaning this line of clothing is made by The Childrens Place for TDS.

Obviously, these stores weren't making money for The Walt Disney Co. -- otherwise, Disney would still be running them, as they did in the 80's and 90's...

I was very disappointed in the Disney Store that we went to at the Georgia Mall. I really wanted to get some pins and some tee shirts but their selection was awful. I found 1 rack with pins and they may have had 4 different characters on that rack. My kids looked around there for about 10 minutes and said they were ready to go. Now you know it's bad when a 10 and 8 year old are telling you that and I drove 2 hours just to get there! Thank goodness we found a Build a Bear store and Dicks Sporting goods there. At least the trip wasn't all for nothing.

Just a quick question for those of you with young boys -- are the Power Rangers even popular anymore? My son is a teenager and I'm always surprised to see they are still selling P.R. merchandise in the stores.

Yes, yes, yes! My son is 4 and is obsessed by all things PR! Every year or so they come up with a new show that continues to bring in the young kids.

We have quite a few DS in Michigan. My local mall has one that carries adult clothing and collectibles. THe majority of merchandise is for children, but there are other items. I would be crushed if they closed this store, I go in at least once a week. Of course I have young kids...

I'm becoming more & more disappointed in TDS as well. Aside from the occasional find during the semiannual sale (Mickey rugby sweater - $13!), its only good for reloading kids PJs and bathingsuits. TDS in Queens, NY is dirty and disorganized. TDS in Yonkers, NY is better but not in great shape - but it's currently closed during mall refurbishment. Paramus, NJ and West Nyack, NY are the best in the NY area, but still sell mostly junk (editorial: terrible ecological footprint). If it weren't for the parking, I'd be solely shopping at World of Disney in Midtown Manhattan.

I know Disney doesn't technically own the chain any more and this probably belongs on another board... But I was just wondering if any one had an explaination as why there has been a mass closing of stores. :confused3

It's kinda depressing. :sad1:

 :faint: :crazy2:

How the heck do they think I'm supposed to survive without a local Disney store. When I'm in the Disney Store, I spend the whole time telling myself that I'm going to walk out and be in Downtown Disney. It worked for Christopher Reeve in Somewhere in Time!

Does anyone have a listing of store closings?
We still have a few in the St. Louis area and even though I don't purchase much from them, I still like to check them out and see what they're offering.

The Disney Store in the Burlington Mall in Burlington, MA is closing March 5th. If you're in the area stop by that night and give us a great sendoff!

OP... I work at a DS in Massachusetts and have not heard of any "mass closings". Have you read or heard something or is this just a perception you have?

Thanks,
Dennis-

It's just something I've seen around. I live in Michigan and a lot of our stores closed. I think we only have two in the state now and I heard of a few other stores closing over the past couple of months.

i work at the disney store in lubbock, texas and our store is closing on march 9th, 2008. the one in amarillo is closing too. i can just hope and pray that they open a new store soon. My DM says they aren't opening a new one in the next 3-6 months. but the info about hoop and disney really jelped me out. i think i'll print it out and take it to work.. a glimmer of hope for all..

this was the info i found! lol

Well, I saw this thread last week, and prayed it wasn't my store. Well, I went today to get Easter stuff and YEP! my store is closing. They found out 2 weeks ago and are closing on the 9th as well. When I commented that Ill just have to go to the other mall, 1 hour from this one, but 30 minutes from my house, apparently it closed last year. That really surprised me because that mall is busy and huge! The closest store is now about 2 1/2 hours away, including a ferry ride:sad2: .

ETA: Kitsap Mall, Silverdale, WA

I spoke to the manager of my store in Mi. He said that the 2 that closed were due to leasing problems, not for lack of business. He said there was no plans to close the one I go to!

I have to say i do not like the Disney Store in England. It is full of plush toys and costumes. It always used to do cool t-shirts and bags with micky on them, not anymore! I never see anything i like in there. Last thing i bought was a pair of pj's about 2 years ago!
I wish they would do nicer adult stuff like they do in disneyworld!

I completely agree with you. The UK stores are still owned by Disney I believe, but all they have in them in toys and kids clothes.

We have two in Leeds, and one doesn't even stock snowglobes anymore! They used to stock bags, jewellery, purses and lots more collectables than they do now. It is now a glorified toy store now.

I went in the other day and had a conversation with the cm there. I asked why there was not more mickey and fab five stuff and she said that Mickey & Co. weren't popular in the UK!! You could've fooled me. It is Winnie the Pooh overdrive in there!

I only go in there for the Disney feeling and the giant video screen which always seems to playing video from WDW.

Maybe us in the UK should contact them and make our views known.

I didn't read through this whole thread, so this might be old news, but

Hasn't Disney stated that they were buying back the Disney store from Hoop retails?

Like I said, that might be old news, but just in case it isn't, I thought I'd bring it up.
