Disney Stock

We bought Disney first right after the 3 for 1 split in the 90's, then again after 9/11 when it was just about at issue again. That purchase has doubled. It does pay a dividend. I believe a good rule of thumb is buy what you use. If you drink coke not pepsi, then buy coke. If you go to Disney all the time, then... There are times that are better to buy then others. Especially now. I would watch it and try to buy low. I don't buy a lot stocks, we have Mutual Funds, but I do own Disney, Coke and a few others.

I know its all relative, but was just wondering what a good starting point(as in how many shares) would be for an inital Disney stock purchase?

I bought each of my three youngest grandchildren 25 shares for Christmas last year (with certificates as artwork :) ) as a "starter" fund for them. It's been between $31-$35 for the past year. There's an extra charge to get the actual certificates (very nominal) and I wouldn't get another certificate. I just wanted them to have one "suitable for framing."

well then I guess you better take a better look. Their dividend payouts the last 8 years have been higher than any point in their history. by a huge margin as well, somewhere between 5-10 X's higher each and every year since 1999

granted no splits but dividends themselves, much much stronger

also--you dont talk historic records in one sentence and then compare it to one down period; even over its slow down period since the late 90's one probably would still be at the very least even over that period

Sorry but I assumed ( bad me ) the OP was asking if it was a good buy compared to other investments. In which case I still say no. IMHO
Disney stock has performed, but many other investments have done MUCH better over the years. One of the splits were just that, a split with little increase on the stock value. I.E. Two $50 stocks for one $100 doesn't make for profit. More of a stock value adjustment. ( they don't sell if they cost to much per share ).

Indeed, but your still compareing Disney to Disney and not the whole market. I.E. compare Disney's preformance to say Google's.

At any rate, people all look at stock preformance differently, and this is nothing more than "my perspective".

Oooops, sorry for the double reply.

I am looking to purchase this particular stock. I know that there are others with much better performance year over year, however that is not my intent here. I will not be day trading this stock, but rather holding it over a period of years. I love the fact that it pays a dividend, and I was just trying to see if maybe the bottom had come to this stock before I started my purchase( I know the million dollar question!). :goodvibes

I'd say now is probably the best time to buy then. Disney stock tends to follow the DOW ( which is down right now ). But keep in mind that WDW is generating big cashflow now with thier DVC offerings. This will more than likely push the price up in the near future.
Over time, this should be a good purchase for you.:thumbsup2

We purchase shares monthly using the Disney direct purchase investment plan. The time to buy is not when the stock is doing well, but when it is not. Its Morningstar rating is five stars.
