Need a place for dinner that has some basic items on the menu for my mom who is primarily a meat and potatoes eater. Doesn’t have to be fancy but not just burgers and steaks either as the rest of us are a little more adventurous. Outside of DS but close is ok too as we can use Uber to get wherever we need to go.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I'm recommending Homecomin for their fried chicken. It's just plain comfort food. We do find it loud and crowded at times. For a quieter place Marie & Enzo's. We enjoyed this restaurant so much, we booked it twice our last vacation. (Tip: Ask for a water view table, if possible)

I'll add to the chorus......

-- Boathouse is steak & seafood. The food is good and uncomplicated....but has 'exotic' choices for the oyster-lover in you.
-- Homecomin' has a menu that revolves around (generally) upscale-Southern Fried Chicken.

FWIW, Boathouse is a very large, bustling, restaurant that can be overwhelming - just by it's size.

.....I'm thinkin' Homecomin' is your better choice of the two.

I know you said no burgers, but we ate at The Edison the other day for lunch and had the best burger I've ever eaten.

Homecomin' is good, but all the food is pretty heavy comfort food and it really doesn't have anything too adventurous. It would be great as long as no one in your group is looking for lighter options. As others have advised, check out the menus - also, some reviewing sites provide pictures of the food.

Thanks All for your recommendations! I’ll check out the menus and see what works.

Are reservations needed at DS?

I would strongly recommend reservations. I made a Boathouse reservation yesterday for early January and the earliest dinner time available was 9:00PM.

Our trip is less than a month away. It’s not looking like a lot of availability for that night (a Sunday) in DS. We may have to go to City Walk or Int’l Drive if we want a res.

Speaking of reservations - do the in park TS restaurants take walk ins? We usually plan one or two meals and QS the rest so have not tried to walk in anywhere ever. Thinking specifically of Sci-Fi as have been trying to go there for several visits and never anything available on our HS day. We have a full day planned at HS 12pm - 9pm so trying to figure out an in park rest break/meal plan. Of course this being last minute there’s nothing open. Do people still hoard ADRs and then cancel them last minute? Is it worth checking a day or two before?

Just for info: I was trying desperately to get a Homecomin reservation for 6 one evening and could not. Managed to get my other party of 9 one but could not get a second table. Finally, on the day of the night that I wanted to eat there, I just called up the restaurant directly and asked if they had a table for 6 available at 6:30 and they said "no problem" and got us in. So for some of the Disney Springs restaurants, if you cannot get a reservation through Disney, then try Open Table, and if that doesn't work, just call them directly.

Its always worth checking, even on the day of. People make changes all the time. We were at DHS two weeks ago with no ADRs booked. We really wanted Sci Fi, but there was no availability on the app. We tried as a walk-up around 1pm and were told "40-120 minute wait, if we have a table" - basically, you can wait but we don't know that we can accommodate you. We tried again later on, around 8pm, and they were reservation only at that point. 50s Prime Time was reservation only all day as well. The only one we could find availability for on the app was Mama Melrose. As far as other restaurants taking walk-ins, it will totally depend on the restaurant and how busy they are. Less popular restaurants at off-peak times will be your best bet.

We ate at The Edison last January. Loved it. But definitely check out the menus! So many options. And YES, make a reservation.

MDE or OpenTable? The DS restaurants on OpenTable release very few reservation slots to Disney. We’ve never had trouble getting into the Boathouse through OpenTable.

There are many more choices on OpenTable. We use that instead of MDE whenever it’s available. Is there any reason you prefer to use MDE?

I wasn't aware of going through Open Table. I just tried it and found plenty of reservations earlier than what I'd booked through MDE so I made a Ressie through Open Table and cancelled my MDE. Thank you!
