Disney Skyliner Accident

Discussing the impact of this accident on sales so soon is a bit dicey, but I suppose if done respectfully is a fair topic of conversation. To that end, I would like to remind everyone that they just had a monorail evacuation last week and a potentially fatal incident earlier this year where a door fell off during transit. Last I checked the monorail resorts were still pretty full.
Key difference: Monorail is running. Skyliner is shutdown pending investigation.

I find it Very hard to believe that a cm watching/present during “the event” didn’t hold any people involved (to make sure they were checked for injuries) which I can only fathom, is Disney policy; in the event of accident or injury. I have my doubts that “people involved directly” in the crash were sent off with a “jolly hope you’re ok) Disney knows that litigation is first and foremost in people’s minds and to allow “injured” people to simply walk off with out g
Checking them is absurd. Now people who weren’t even on the darn thing will claim they were. Adding again to the litigation costs and our costs as consumers

Disney has cameras EVERYWHERE! They undoubtedly have them at the Riviera station and can verify that there were people in those crushed cabins. Totally irresponsible for them to deny knowing there were occupants.

As well as pretty reliable, real-time tracking MagicBands (if I were to reckon a guess).

And they should have had a plan for dealing with media damage control for an incident like this as well. Clearly they were behind in both actual rescue procedures as well as handling media backlash.
I posted an article about a similar situation a few months ago at Sea World San Diego. It took 3.5 hours to clear riders. Same as here. It takes some amount of time to clear Gondolas and three hours isn’t bad.

I think it's safe to assume all Skyliner stations are monitored via CCTV and TPTB know how many passengers were involved in the "crash" part of the stoppage. That said, I suspect the official story to be modified as those passengers reach out to them.

The expectation of excessive compensation for every little incident is part of the reason why prices have gone up so much. I can’t even begin to imagine how much Disney spends on compensation every year for both legitimate and not legitimate incidents every year.

I would think for most people who were trapped, a one day ticket to make up for any lost park time, and $100 gift card should be adequate compensation for this incident. And I bet most people will be fine with that, and leave it at that. Of course some guests may require more than that, and Disney (or the manufacturer of the gondola) should pay for any medical bills that guest have as a result of the incident. But a suggestion of a free trip as someone else said they would have expected is unreasonable and excessive.

For full disclosure, I have received compensation from Disney several times over the years. Twice when it as offered by Disney during an incident (once for a downgraded room view, and once as a gesture of good will when it took Disney about two hours to figure out why the door to my room would not unlock). Twice I received compensation as a result of letters I wrote (once for a horrible string of events at the Disneyland hotel and most recently for an email I sent about a bad dining experience and a safety concern due to unaccompanied teens who were there for a cheerleading event). The most recent compensation I received, I repeatedly told the cast member I did not want or expect compensation and that I just wanted to let Disney know about my experiences, but she insisted on sending me a gift card.

Excellent point. If I was compensated by my public transit system every time I was inconvenienced by a delayed or cancelled train, or being stuck in an unconditioned car on a 90 degree day, I could probably pay for a Disney trip each year.
I think it depends on the individual and their situation. Last night of a vacation that you have been planning for 3 years, an elderly or physically/mentally challenged member in your party might impact how I felt. If I had to relieve myself in front of others in my party or strangers. Upset kids, or those with fears. It would all depend on how I was impacted. This isn’t just about people asking for the moon, its about how it was handled by WDW. Based on what I’ve seen so far-not well.

I hope Disney is able to learn from this and make improvements to their system. Delays and accidents in public transit do happen and we can just hope they make improvements. I’m really disappointment by Disney’s response though! Lack of buses for people stranded, lack of proper communication during the event and the continuous misinformation even now. They can do better

Right, but to some extent people expect the monorail to have operation fails. It is a decades old system that Disney obviously has not been investing in. The skyliner is a new system produced by a supposedly sophisticated European manufacturer.

Fair point. That said, I do agree with previous posters who highlight our short memories. It's a fascinating human characteristic where we willfully disregard logic or warnings or anything else of the like just so we can do what we want to do. I want to ride the Skyliner when I'm there next week and if it's running, I'll conveniently forget that this little mishap ever happened. :)

I don't believe you have to scan your MBs to ride, so this would be moot.

Ugh...I’m going to call... I’m really nervous. I don’t want anything from them, I just want them to know our account of the incident.

Please let us know how you make out.

Not sure if I'd want to be bribed, or rather tell the truth via the local news station. I'm pissed if it is true that Disney PR had denied people were in the crashed gondolas.
I doubt they know. They are not going to deny riders when they know that the riders could post on Disboards the next day. When stuff happens there is sometimes miscommunication and the facts are not well known.

What I dont understand is there is not a better way to evacuate. Not being an engineer maybe there’s reasons things can t be done, but you would thing there would be the ability to empty cars and slide cars off line so you could advance cars to stations to unload. I mean you know any system running up to 18 + hours a day is going to have issues, just surprised there isn’t a better evacuation emergency procedure.

I found it very hard to believe, as well, but I am not going to discredit the poster here who was there.

Another good point. To clarify, I wasn't as much trying to draw a connection between the two but rather suggest that we humans tend to ignore these things when it suits us. But your point is well taken.

Are you saying there is no bus alternative?
Months ago on this site there were a lot of arguments about the skyliner replacing the buses. Those who predicted this sort of event were arguing that it should absolutely not replace the buses, nor could it do so legally and meet ADA requirements for people with fears of heights or PTSD (or those on continuous oxygen who cannot risk being suspended for 4 hours 60 feet in the air, etc.). I think we can see that those people were right and the skyliner should only be seen as an addition, not a substitution, of transport. But I do think Disney originally wanted it to be a substitution, as indicated on their signs.

One must consider Disney guest population, which is quite unique as far as transporting populations go. It's more like transporting a hospital patient population. It cannot be compared to a population of skiers or even commuters. It's one of the things that people like about Disney. One cannot say "oh well because Disney wants people to transport by gondola, those people just shouldn't travel there. Disney built up a reputation of serving that population. It blew my mind that they thought that could require use of a system that really isn't designed to work well with a patient population.
