LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- One of the new rides at Walt Disney World in Florida is apparently a little too much for some people willing to get on board.

Six people over the age of 55 have been taken to a hospital for chest pain and nausea after going the ride called "Mission: Space."

It is the most hospital visits for a single ride since Florida's major theme parks agreed in 2001 to report any serious injuries to the state.

The only other ride that approaches that number was Universal Orlando's "Ripsaw Falls," which had three reported injuries in 2002.

Although the reports showed no major maladies from Mission: Space, the hospital visits may come up in discussions this summer with state officials who consult annually with park officials about safety, according to the report.

Well, I think Disney has their butt covered well - there are enough warnings inside and outside of MS to make one believe the ride could kill you.

That doesn't stop someone from suing, and win or lose it cost money to defend.

I don't intend to ride Mission:Space but I can see how Ripsaw Falls upset people. Now, I looove Splash, but I cried when I got off the Ripsaw falls (my DFIANCE and DDAD had to really try hard to calm me down) I ended up with a soothing hot fudge sundae. There are no safety bars on the ride and nothing to look at except bare pipes, no cute animals like Splash....this was not a ride fo the faint hearted.

I ddn't see anything wrong with Ripsaw falls or really that different, but just my opinion.

Plenty of people get off every ride at Universal every day with nausea, and most likely chest pains. Disney is just being cautious by sending them to the hospital to have them checked out.

Wow! And on another current M:S thread most folks are talking about how tame this ride is?

Every Ride??? : confused : Wow you must be plenty busy with your job at Disney and your survey work over at Universal. That ET sure is a heart stopper.

I must admit to a little bit of nausea after the third time thru ' A Day in the Park with Barney' :duck:

Actually this one seems likely to cause symptoms. Three times! :p

I admit to weakness after riding Storm Acceletron. You've got to watch those carny rides.

I wonder if Disney is going to remane the ride to Mission vomit. This is coming from a radio station in Orlando.

That's LAME, Cap'n. ;)

Seriously, though. Could it be that they've managed to create something that isn't really thrilling enough for the "edge" crowd, but still makes too many ordinary mortals ill?

Nah, couldn't be.

Captain Pirate,

Don't you think something can be both: 1) relatively tame and not too terribly thrilling and 2) nauseating at the same time?

As I tried to point out in that M:S thread, and Matt alludes to, M:S may not wow the thrill crowd and may puke-out the mortals. So, what's its audience?

So, what's its audience?

Bright-eyed little tots who study each every revolution, and decide that when they grow up, they'll become Eisnereers in charge of MEI, and maybe they can even design their own spinner for the 22nd Century. Maybe even gut the inside out of Spaceship Earth, put the Rocket Rods inside, and call it Time Racer: The Spinner!

I think I'd be feeling nauseated after only one spin on that one! ;)

News media tend to dramatize everything. The story makes it sound like all of the people sent to the hospital were at death's door. Notice the story does not mention how many of these people were actually admitted to the hospital - I would bet that most of them were simply treated and released which would indicate that there was little need for a hospital visit in the first place. But if this inormation were included it would probably make it back page news and not be the attention grabber the news station wanted.

Not to mention the fact that these were 6-8 people out of the
tens of thousands of who have ridden it since it opened last
summer.

I'll take my chances.

BTW, I had a chance to ride it a couple of times last July when it
was open to AP holders........Fantastic attraction:D

They probably would have had the chest pains whether they were on M:S or not?

I'm sure most of it was panic attacks. You're in a "box"- you can't move, and when the G forces hit you it can make anyone a little nervous really freak out. I rode it with my 5 year old for the first time last month and I don't think I will ever ride it again. It was cool, except the part when you feel like you can't even breathe-wooo what fun!:teeth:
