Does Disney recognize you as a resort guest on the day of check in if you haven't checked in yet? How do they know?

This is regards to early entry to the parks.

Thanks

The last 2 times I was there, I had to show my resort ID for early entry into the parks and in order to get a wristband for after hours.

You can check in and get your KTTW card with out having a room assignment.

They have no way to recognize you as a guest until you check in. You can check in at 7am and get your KTTW card even if your room isn't available.

You are considered a Disney guest from the minute you check in until midnight of the day you check out.

So, yes, you have to check in. But you can check in any time before the posted check in time and get everything you need for your stay.
