Disney Removing Do Not Disturb Signs

I get the frustration for those who want maximum privacy when staying in a hotel, but the bottom line is, you're staying on someone else's property, and they have a right to enter the room whenever they choose. Going offsite isn't going to prevent this from happening. Other hotel chains have the same security concerns that Disney does.

I think they have every right to enter as it is their property ......... but I think that right should be exercised should they suspect that something is wrong, if there are bad smells or complaints or leaking water ........... even landlords are usually required to give something like 24 hours notice unless there is an emergency. Will they have set hours they can enter or will I risk them walking in at odd hours?

So I pass on Housekeeping .... Disney sends in Housekeepers each day to .......... do what? Look under the beds? Check in the drawers? Sniff in my fridge? Maybe shake my suitcase? Why not just bring in dogs to sniff to make sure I have no explosives in the room?

I know that is sarcastic but seriously, what are these Housekeepers being instructed to search for in our rooms?

Having the right to do it and actually doing it are different things. Disney is actually going to do it, every day. We rented for 10years- yes my landlord had the right to enter, but never did. Sure as heck not EVERY DAY.

THIS^ and the hang tag and it's message make it sound like Disney is saying, we are coming like it or not. They honestly could have covered their bases on need to check rooms in the fine print you sign at check in if it were just a highly random, based on concern issue ....... I take this hang tag as saying "expect it". I will be interested to see if they change the locking mechanisms.

Considering Disney owns the room I'm not sure you have much ground to stand on. Sorry. But yes, they do have a right to enter your room.
Well, they call us “owners” as DVC members. Owners of a timeshare. I would think I should be able to say I don’t want housekeeping coming in. But it’s obvious that’s not the case. Whatever- like everything else there’s opinions on either side of this, but the fact is they are going to, so we are just going to stay where they still give us the option. We have already started checking into resale companies to sell. Or we will rent our points. I will stay at one of the offsite places. You know, the ones that now get the same perks as staying onsite:thumbsup2

I work for a major hotel chain. Do not disturb means do not disturb still. After 4 days we call and make sure they still don’t want service. No barging in.

I am hoping as part of the check in procedures they will ask you to pick a window of time you prefer for these inspections. I sleep until 10:00-11:00 and would be furious if someone tried to come in before then. However, I am perfectly fine with them coming in any time between, say, noon and 6pm. Communicating that info to housekeeping needs to be done properly, or there are going to be problems.

I particularly don't care for this with the pet friendly rooms.

First, I think a stranger would frighten my dog. She would be crated, but who knows what a stranger could do to your pet. Heck, they could even poison a pet and you wouldn't be able to prove anything. Also, this intrusion would probably get my quiet dog to become very loud and start barking and barking to no end.

I especially don't feel comfortable with teenagers being in the room alone and housekeeping decides to drop in. Say the parent went to the food court for food to bring back to the room and they stayed behind. Who knows what can happen.

I wonder how this will work when it's rolled out to dog friendly resorts, especially with dogs who are not crated.

I wish Disney would at least give a timeframe of when to expect someone wanting access to our room. Should I expect a knock at 8 AM? 8 PM? 11 PM? We're at the parks during the day most days but if we're sleeping late, I don't relish the idea that someone could knock before we're ready to get out of bed. Sure, we'll continue using our deadbolt, but apparently using the "occupied" sign does not guarantee no one will knock. Also, what about babies who nap? No parent whose child needs that afternoon nap is going to be happy when a knock wakes their sleeping child. Hopefully there will be some way for guests to indicate a time of day that would be least disruptive.

ooops - just posted this on the other thread, still applies.

No big deal for us. They always knock in our experience. Sometimes at 8 am!!! (they come back later)

I'm sure people will get outraged because you are worried about naps or something, but I'm sure it will be fine.

I've read people who are VERY upset about it and it makes me wonder how often you go to Disney that a new policy that housekeeping will pop in once a day, everyday would get you this upset? In our case, if for one week every three years or so housekeeping is coming in our room, I think we can handle it. ;)

All the inside/outside noises that happen at the resorts during the day, a knock on the door isn't going to make a whole bunch of difference. Besides, if you already expect housekeeping, that's your visit. They aren't coming back again.

Sorry, don't agree with the outrage with this one. That guy in Vegas had an arsenal that would have been noticed had someone been in the room - different times now, like it or not.

I think you make a mistake assuming everyone is like you. If I was napping mid-day, you can bet it's because I desperately needed sleep. And I wouldn't be able to get back to sleep once woken with a knock. And a child being woken from a much needed nap can make or break the rest of the day in some families.

I don't even have children, so my opinion will really annoy people. :)

So everyone is requesting no housekeeping? Otherwise, what's the difference? If you are getting housekeeping, that's your visit. Why would that affect your nap later? Although except for last trip, housekeeping always came after 2, so naps didn't work out anyways.

But hey if you are bothered by this, you are bothered by this. Write to Disney.

We take our DND sign down when we go to the parks. When we get back, it goes back up. Sometimes housekeeping has not come before we get back to our room (12-1) for a rest, swim, shower. If they haven't come to our room yet, we do without housekeeping that day. We go back out about 4-5 PM, but usually by then housekeeping has passed us by.

Same with us. If housekeeping has come when we're gone to the park, great! If not, oh well. At that point, we just don't want to be disturbed.

I see. But I'm betting the average guest doesn't spend 3-4 hours in the room during the afternoon, so housekeeping probably comes with no issue during this time.

We will see, I'm sure it will work out in the end.

Another thread ...............

I was bathing my two daughters and my husband went to get ice. We had the new DND sign on the door. While in the bathroom, I heard a single light tap on the door. I thought it was my husband and he forgot to take his key. My younger daughter is only 1 1/2 so I could not leave her to check the door. I called "just a minute" but almost immediately after the knock, the door opened and I still thought it was my husband until a strange man walked right into the room and stood outside the bathroom door. My older daughter is almost 4 and very shy and she started to cry. The stranger explained he was there to "check the room" and continued to walk toward us. I told him we didn't need any service. My older daughter was crying, my younger daughter was crying because her sister was crying, and my husband came back at that moment. The stranger said it looked like "everything was good" and left.

I am not sure what to make of this situation. My 4 y/o keeps asking us to check the balcony for strange men. I am aware of the possible rationale behind this change but I do not believe that this is the way to implement it. My husband went to speak to the front desk but they seem uninterested in listening to his suggestions that they should wait longer than three seconds after knocking, listen for a response from within the room and not approach children crying in bathtubs.

Would you take any further action?

I don't have a problem with this, if, as others have said, you can request a time preference. I doubt we'll be hitting rope drop every day next November. Maybe a day or two and sleeping in other days. I'm not much of a morning person and we have 2 teenagers. So anything before 9 would be too early for us.

And years ago, those 2 teenagers were nappers. Rope drop, back for a quick swim and then naps. If the room wasn't cleaned by that point, we put out the DND sign and just asked for towels.

I understand the purpose of this, but they need to work with people's schedules. I think it may have been better to just keep the DND sign. And change the policy to be that they must stop in once a day for towels and trash (and security purposes). If by a certain time, say 5 or 6 pm, the room has not been entered due to the DND sign being out all day, THEN they would be knocking and entering. Most naps are done by this point, and even early birds aren't yet to sleep. Many people will be heading out to dinner, etc. seems like they could easily enter into the system throughout the day which rooms have been cleaned/entered and which haven't. Then just have a team go out at 5 or 6 (or whatever time) and visit those rooms needed.

I see. But I'm betting the average guest doesn't spend 3-4 hours in the room during the afternoon, so housekeeping probably comes with no issue during this time.

I would suggest you read the thread on BLT. Two people have been walked in on already while getting dressed, and a mom was walked in on while bathing her children and one of the children is still having issues as a result. There is a huge difference in having the DND sign respected and allowing people to come in anytime. So far,it doesn’t appear to be going that well for the folks at BLT.
