Disney Quarter 1 Earnings Report

Bob Iger discusses rumors of him extending his contract. He says that he will do what is in the best interest of the company. If the board decides that is by extending his contract he will do so. They have a succession plan underway though.

I hope Disney stock gets slammed. This is the only way the board/stockholder (vastly held by funds) will take notice and boot Iger out. I think if he goes things have a chance of getting better.

From a stockholder perspective they love Iger. He's done good. The big thing hurting stock is cable.

You mean is orbitz renting rooms through Disney. Disney wouldn't rent from Orbitz. Many sites like Orbitz, southwest vacations, etc. offer Disney hotels. That's nothing new. Occupancy rates are just how many rooms are filled on a given day during a certain period. It doesn't matter how that room was booked.

Disney has seen a decline in kids viewing across linear channels. Iger says new Disney shows will do well because of the Disney name.

From my vantage point, many boys over about 9-10 years old aren't watching regular TV programming. They are watching YouTube videos. And, I believe the YouTube viewership is going to continue to increase because the content is current and immediate. Plus, kids can watch the things they are interested in, not what the network *thinks* they'll be interested in. Media is a whole new world these days.

And one thought about attendance - I wonder if Disney is riding out this dip, speculating that many families have likely postponed their trips until after something new opens?

Maybe if Disney had shows that gave kids a reason to WANT to come back every week and watch, it would be a different story.

I'm not too well versed in the current TV programs, but I have seen bits and pieces, and they are just terrible. I've said this before, but I'll say it again, their live action shows are just too far out there. That type of wackiness might work if they were animated, but them being live action just kills it.

Take a show like Gravity Falls. It was smart, well done, but most importantly it was INTERESTING and INTRIGUING. Waiting through both of the hiatus was PAINFUL but the fans of the show did just that, wait through it, because they knew it was going to be worth it.

I don't know, I think kids TV has just gotten so watered down over the years. Just because kids are young doesn't mean they need to be pandered to (most of the time).

They have no "plan" until they go outside the stale hierarchy and get two people with one creative and one business mind...

I know...where have I seen that before? ...but I'm beginning to think it's the only structure that works.

I've always thought about this. You have one money man (someone like Iger) and one imagineer (someone like Baxter). Baxter comes up with ideas and Iger crunches the numbers to say yes we can do that, or no we can't do that, or yes we can do this part, or whatever.

What I would give to be a fly on the wall for when imagineering pitches new ideas to Iger, if that's even a thing. Does he just sign off at this point?

Yeah I think tv for kids ages 8-12 is bad. I remember growing up and I had that's so raven, Lizzie McGuire, Kim possible, etc. Those shows every kid I knew watched. Now my 11 year old sister barely watched any of the Disney channel shows.

@mikepizzo - I *totally* agree! The end of P&F and of Gravity Falls were pretty much the end of watching Disney Channel for my boys. Those actually had our whole family watching together!
...And of course as I sit here and type, one of them just came on and put on Star vs. The Forces of Evil :rotfl:So I guess I can't say they NEVER watch Disney Channel. But 95% of their screen watching time is YouTube.

But in general, yeah, the content is just insipid. There are times I tell my kids they can't watch certain shows (not limited to Disney Channel) because they are TOO STUPID! I tell them I don't want the stupidity to seep into their brains!

And to your point, both of those live action shows (while still being wacky) were more or less pretty grounded based on the world the show created. It was easier for kids to connect and get invested in the show.

The part of your message that I put in bold is, in my opinion, what makes a show successful. If it's able to captivate both children and adults then it's doing something right.

@rteetz sorry for so much TV talk, I'll cut it. More to the earnings than that.

But here's what you can't spin: declining attendance is a loss of potential revenue and profit.

Ding ding ding ding...we have a winner.

I keep hearing people say, "that's exactly what disney wanted, less crowded parks and increased revenue".

No, its simply not. They want as many people in the parks for the highest price they can charge.

Disney does not care if you think the parks are too crowded, they wanted as many bodies in that park for the highest price they can get. Period.

I think that age group trends lower honestly, could just be my kids, my boys are 4 & 5 and would honestly prefer watching youtube that regular tv.

And this is the real problem they have and an interesting dynamic unfolding.

I have no doubt that everything they've done over the last 5-10 was to find the point where they couldn't charge anymore...and knowing their delusions they honestly didn't believe that point existed.

Burbank, we have a problem. If a significant chunk of the business goes away - due to high prices? They will not be able to respond effectively.

It will become clear the minute we see iger's chute open...

What's Eisner up to these days?

I have two kids, 9 & 6, they should be prime targets, yet... they never watch Disney channel. They used to enjoy Jake & the Neverland Pirates, Sophia the First and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, but, my 9 year old is past those shows, and my 6 year old pretty much follows what her big brother does. They do not enjoy any of their live-action shows. They far prefer to use Netflix and just pick and choose whatever they want to watch, or You Tube.

I think you just point out EXACTLY why this espn problem is a huge deal...with digital choice, nobody wants to sit through commercials laden, talking headband crap...just pick and choose specifically the 30 seconds a day that matters to them.
