Okay, my sister sent me a youtube video trailer of Disney's New Princess Tiana (from Disney's The Princess and the frog). Anyway, we got into this crazy almost psychedelic conversation about who is really a Disney Princess based off their stories. I'm really confused. According to my Sister, Mulan is definitely not a princess, but technically Pocahontas is. She is a Native American Princess, the daughter of the chief. She is still a princess, but American equivalent. She said that Belle who isn't really a princess, as they never said whether or not she and prince Adam married, which would actually make her a queen. Cinderella is not a princess either. She is a queen. Ariel would probably be one too, but was also a princess majority of the film.

Confused - me too. Who are the Official Disney Princesses?

Me and my friend had the same argument the other day! The only one I dont consider a princess is Mulan, shes not married to a prince or king. As for the rest of them I guess there royalty in some way.

Mulan came close to marrying a prince in the sequel, but otherwise is not royalty by blood or marriage.

I believe that as long as Disney can put them on a Pink T-shirt and sell it to little girls, then it is a Princess!;)

DH keeps saying Giselle is not, after all she didn't marry Prince Edward. My DD disagrees though and keeps correcting him. :lmao:

In my opinion, although I love all the 'princesses' that aren't really princesses, these are the offical, true princesses:
-Snow White
-Sleeping Beauty/Aurora
-Jasmine
-Cinderella
-Ariel
-Pocahontus (debatable)

Of course I consider Belle to be a princess but if we are getting all technical she's not since we never see her and Beast get married-plus, what territory does Beast rule? Mulan, Tink, Giselle, Alice, etc aren't princesses either. Also, Megara (from Hercules) is not a Princess. She's not a goddess either since Hercules decided to stay on Earth to be with her, giving up his God status.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't Cinderella be a Princess until Prince Charming's dad died and he took power..? If that's true, she'd be a Princess as well. princess:

I thought she'd be a princess after she married Prince Charming (like Princess Diana). After Prince Charming's dad died she would become Queen (if Prince Charming's mom allowed him to - like Queen Elizabeth). So basicly, after both Prince Charming's parents are died - he'd be king and Cinderella would be Queen. Can you believe I'm actually trying to compare cartoons to real people? - This is madness, I'll tell you madness. :rotfl:

Actually, Belle *does* marry the Beast after he's become a prince! At the very end of the movie when you see that final frame of the stained glass window- Belle is wearing a crown!

In the original Hercules mythology, Megara actually IS a princess! The Disney movie doesn't make any references to that fact though.

Ariel and Jasmine are the only ones who were both born AND raised as princesses since Snow White was treated as a maid and Aurora was raised in a cottage in the woods.

Mulan falls in love with a high ranking general, but she isn't technically royalty.

Pocahontas is the Native American equivalent of a princess, but it's an entirely different culture.

Okay, you beat me to that part.

But is the Beast/Prince's dad still alive? If so, Belle is a princess, married to a prince. If the old man croaked, Belle is a queen, married to a king.

Ariel was always a princess, even before she married Eric. She was KING Triton's daughter. But when she married Eric, she got the dress!

I love this thread. We're so intense about this,

What about Tinkerbelle? I"ve heard it said she is a pixie princess, but I've never seen anything official about it.

Actually -- I'M the bad one with this -- I point this out to DD AND not only is Giselle NOT a Princess but Nancy IS as she went on to marry Edward in Andalasia!!!

Edited and now that I think about it -- they would be King & Queen because Narissa dies.

Details, details....my DD just got exasperated with me with that one and finally just said "It's a Disney Movie mom -- don't get so technical" However, it IS my favorite Disney movie but... Giselle never became a Princess.

But the Beast lived in a defunct kingdom which technically had no power due to the witch's spell.

The only true princess was Arora (Sleeping Beauty). She didn't have to marry to get the title.

No, Tinker Bell isn't a princess- she's a very talented fairy. I think she'd argue that fairies are better than princesses anyway.

And Ariel -- She was a Princess by birth.
