Disney/ Pixar gotten too adult?

Has Disney / Pixar movies gotten too adult for them to watch?

YES!!! I will no longer expose children to a Disney movies without previewing it myself for content. It is sad there is not a franchise that you can trust to just be wholesome entertainment without trying to put their slant of political correctness. Thank goodness for DVD collection prior to 2000. I just wish they would release the last two seasons of Muppet Show before they messed with that brand as well.

They're not really any different than they ever were. Pixar movies always had that something for everyone with a lot of content that speaks to adults. Walt Disney didn't believe in talking down to kids, hence why some earlier Disney films are a bit dark. It doesn't have to be pablum to be for kids. While I can certainly see that with Soul many kids might not really connect with the situation and it is a bit deep, I really don't think it's "too much" for them - that's for the individual kid to decide.

IMO a lot of the Disney/Pixar movies help children understand important life lessons and morals without making it obvious. That I can applaud. They also do a great job in helping children through tough life situations that might be hard to sit down and talk about. I have a 5 year old who knew from the preview of Soul that he didn't want to watch it, gave it a try and was bored with it - I feel that the more deep themed movies aren't worrisome as many children can decipher for themselves what is appealing. I think it all also depends on the age of the child and if they can understand the hidden adult jokes - but that is what makes them more appealing to watch as a family. I feel comfortable turning on a Disney show for the family to watch together more than a Netflix film more than 85% of the time.

In the past a Pixar movie would be a kids movie with some adult jokes and themes thrown in to keep the adults attention. With Soul it was more of an adult movie with some kid humor thrown in to keep the kids attention.

When I was a kid, I really liked the more adult cartoons. These were often Japan anime redone for kids. Battle of the Planets comes to mind. One of the better redone ones was Robotech, which merged three distinct Japan animation properties together.

Next step. Watch Attack on Titan with kids or some Psycho Pass.

I don't necessarily think of them as "kids movies" - like much Disney animation, they are for everybody. The demographic is more like 8 to 80 which I think is the best way to do it. While some animation is directed solely at kids, I don't think Pixar films ever really fit that bill.

Also, I love Robotech! I actually prefer my anime sliced up for US audiences, which I know a lot of anime fans would find distasteful. I never really could get into it though outside of the chop-jobs like Robotech and Voltron.

Soul was 100% adult movie. It was a one and done for us. I like what a podcaster I like said - that it felt like a podcast about music that wasn't allowed to play music. Where was this music that was his passion? When the little souls started saying "hell! hell! hell!" a few minutes into the movie, my husband and I just looked at each other. I mean, the movie had a decent message, but no satisfying resolution. I don't see much of anything that's marketable to little kids - I don't see Joe or 22 costumes being the hit for Halloween. I've seen rave reviews, but I guess I just don't get it. I love Disney for something my family (DH, DD7, DS4, and I) can share, do, and enjoy together. My 7 year old was bored and the 4yo fell asleep.

My take away from the movie was meh. I'd rather watch an anime such as Attack on Titan than this rubbish. Pixar hasn't been the same since they booted their leader.

Same. I've rewatched some movies I loved as a kid and went while watching. Totally missed all the adult stuff when I was little. Drop Dead Fred was a real eye-opener.

No, it hasn't. A lot of the Disney/Pixar movies have had little nods to adult humor. SOUL was just one film. I enjoyed it. I didn't like Inside Out. I think some people expect that all animation is primarily for kids, which isn't true. Just snippets about the subject matter (or reading the reviews) indicated this might not entertain the little ones. Everyone doesn't have to like everything and that is a good thing. Certainly doesn't mean Pixar has gone down some rabbit hole.

I completely agree with you. I revisit the cartoons that I watched as a child and now I understand that I really didn't understand the jokes and references that were intended for adults. So the little kid doesn't pay attention to it at all
