Hi everyone!
We are heading to WDW in December. I have a DS who is 9. He loves to collect stuff, and I can foresee him being very interested in the Disney pins that people trade. HOWEVER, he is very quiet and will have no interest in getting into the trading side of it. He will likely just want to build a collection with his souvenir money. If he starts buying pins and wearing them on one of the cute lanyards, will he be constantly approached by people wanting to trade? I don't want to encourage this interest if he is going to feel stressed about strangers talking to him. Any thoughts?

No, he won't be constantly approached about his pins. I have a DS10 who has a lanyard full of pins (he loves to collect the Stitch pins & pins of the thrill rides) & people never approach him about trading. I think he was approached once or twice a few years ago.

Have fun!! I am addicted to it as much as my DS.

Yes he probably will be. He could have people approach him just to ask him about his pins, including CM's, because if he is wearing them they will assume he is interested in trading. Here's what I would do. Talk to him first about it and let him know that if he wears them on a lanyard people will approach him and see how he feels on the subject. If he doesn't want that to happen he can still collect them but just don't have him wear them. My son collects only Mickey ones but never wears them around because they are special to him and each one has a specific memory behind it. He is just not interested in trading them, at least right now. He will wear one around on his shirt occasionally but most of the time they are just displayed in his room so he can look at them and that's what makes him happy. Ask your son if he's interested and how he wants to deal with it and then you won't have to worry when you get there.

Thanks, maybe I'll urge him towards the pressed pennies (they're cheaper too!) and just avoid the possibility altogether.

My son traded pins last year and loved it. He was given a grab bag of pins by his grandma to trade as he wanted, then bought a few special pins for himself. He took the grab bag pins and ended up trading to get a whole set of the baby pirate pins! That is his favorite souvenir of the whole trip.

He wore the lanyard of pins and on one side had pins he wanted to trade and on the other side the pins he was keeping. I don't recall anyone coming up to him randomly, but some CM did ask if he wanted to trade. When he was done trading a polite "no thanks." was all he said and it was done. There wasn't any pressure or anything. He did love talking about them, and had a great time learning about pins from some CMs that had been there a long time.

He is planning on trading again this year, but it leaving all of his "good" pins at home. He will take the left overs from the grab bag and I will probably get him some more to trade off again. He is looking forward to trying to get another set.

I thought I would share with you that my children( 12, 9, and 7) are also very quiet, but when they got to WDW and saw how easy and fun pin trading was, they broke out of their quiet little shells and went on major pin hunts. They loved it. I think your son will probably enjoy it too once he sees how fun and easy it can be especially if you are standing with him and enjoying the pins too.

We are going in December too, and I have already purchased new lanyards and pins to trade. They are our favorite souvenirs.

and never speaks in public. Honestly it drives me crazy. We've just gotten him to the point where he will order his own ice cream or dinner at a restaurant in a very quiet voice. (Of course he doesn't shut up at home.)

Anyway, we thought he woudn't want to trade either, but he had no problem walking up to a CM and asking to see their pins.

We were there for 9 days and the kids had a lanyard full of pins on the entire time. No one ever asked them to trade, although a few did ask to see them.

DD8 is very shy, she still is, but not when pin trading! lol She approachs the CM's herself and asks to see their pins, she watches and many times she will say "Pins" and we will all walk over to see what the CM has. :) We all collect something different so it's fun for us but it's been a great tool for bringing her out of her shell. "regular" people will probably not approach him, CM's probably will. If he doesn't want to trade all he has to do is say "No Thanks" and that's it. If people pressure him then you can be prepared to step in and back him up but most people won't pressure him at all. When we pin trade we love trading with kids and while standing in lines will offer trades to kids, but we never push it and if they chose not to trade then that's just fine with us. We buy grab bags from mousepinsonline.com and I have a couple of eBay sellers that have sent me good stuff, if you would like their eBay names just PM me and I'll be happy to share. :)

I've never been approached by someone asking to trade. I usually only trade with cast members but am not against trading with children. Oh and those professional pin people in DTD. I never carry keepers on my lanyard in case someone were to ask to trade. My DS5 loves to pin trade. Be aware it is an addicting and expensive habit and should be avoided at all costs (so that there are more pins for me to trade for :rotfl2: )
