Just got off the phone with Canon after getting a product return authorization...
Disgusted; or more accurately, disappointed. Images are not that much better, and video is crap: auto-focus can't 'settle' so no matter the situation, even holding steady on a fixed object, it goes in and out of focus. More so in even slightly low light.
And it turns out the buttons are in fact poorly placed, (or my hands are too big,) each being just a bit off of where you expect it to be, especially the shutter release- or just in the place where you can hit it without knowing it and throw settings off. Various other petty little things, but with the anti-functionality of the auto focus, all else is moot.
One thing about the camera, the test shots I had taken the night before- the mode dial was set to <C> (???) not <auto> as I had thought, so that helped. The still images are good, and better than anything I have had, especially in dynamic range, but again, not that much better, and with the bad auto focus in video mode, not a keeper.
Oh! And the door to the battery compartment is fit so tightly that it is hard to open when there are batteries in it. I mean it takes some real force- much more than one would expect or want to use- so much so that I thought I must have jammed it, so I inspected it carefully, but it was aligned perfectly.
Today's POTD was straight out of the camera (a bit overcast at the time) and yesterday's was subjected to some modifications before posting.
Just FYI.
