Disney Performer Dies After Accident on Set of Magic Kingdom Show
Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the death of a Disney performer who was injured while performing in a Magic Kingdom show.

A friend says 47-year-old Mark Priest was sword-fighting in "Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Tutorial" when he slipped and hit his head on a wall.

A Disney spokeswoman said the company had no idea his injuries were life-threatening. Disney on Monday contacted the sheriff's office and Occupational Safety and Health Administration after hearing Priest died.

Priest's condition was improving, and didn't seem serious immediately after the injury. The actor was able to rush offstage and joked about his condition at the hospital.

He was moved out of intensive care Monday, but deteriorated rapidly and died. No official cause of death had been determined.

Wow, how many times recently have we heard of a bump on the noggin leading to death??? It's scarey and had definitely made me more aware. This story is sad.

So sad :(... it is odd how we've heard this a couple times now...how the bump on the head initially seems as nothing...then they die :guilty:

I agree. That's certainly something we can also discuss. How a seemingly innocent bump on the head can lead to death. :( How life is short. Live like you were dying. (isn't that a song?)

I love that song!! Great words to live by...

Tim McGraw

He said: "I was in my early forties,
"With a lot of life before me,
"An' a moment came that stopped me on a dime.
"I spent most of the next days,
"Looking at the x-rays,
"An' talking 'bout the options an' talkin’ ‘bout sweet time."
I asked him when it sank in,
That this might really be the real end?
How’s it hit you when you get that kind of news?
Man whatcha do?

An' he said: "I went sky diving, I went rocky mountain climbing,
"I went two point seven seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu.
"And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter,
"And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying."
An' he said: "Some day, I hope you get the chance,
"To live like you were dyin'."

He said "I was finally the husband,
"That most the time I wasn’t.
"An' I became a friend a friend would like to have.
"And all of a sudden goin' fishin’,
"Wasn’t such an imposition,
"And I went three times that year I lost my Dad.
"Well, I finally read the Good Book,
"And I took a good long hard look,
"At what I'd do if I could do it all again,
"And then:

"I went sky diving, I went rocky mountain climbing,
"I went two point seven seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu.
"And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter,
"And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying."
An' he said: "Some day, I hope you get the chance,
"To live like you were dyin'."

Like tomorrow was a gift,
And you got eternity,
To think about what you’d do with it.
An' what did you do with it?
An' what can I do with it?
An' what would I do with it?

"Sky diving, I went rocky mountain climbing,
"I went two point seven seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu.
"And then I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter,
"And I watched Blue Eagle as it was flyin'."
An' he said: "Some day, I hope you get the chance,
"To live like you were dyin'."

"To live like you were dyin'."
"To live like you were dyin'."
"To live like you were dyin'."
"To live like you were dyin'."

I feel so sorry for his family and friends. :sad1: He was a great performer and was well liked by his peers. It really is horribly sad that something like this could happen - it seemed like he was going to be fine.

Yes, it certainly sounds a lot like Natasha Richardson's accident, which led to a subdural hematoma. Very sad.

If you don't have anything to "discuss", maybe you should just move on . . .

To me it brings to mind the whole, kids wearing helmets debate. It just shows that anything can happen at any time, ESPECIALLY when doing something that compromises your safety, like riding a bike.

It's such a sad story. And, yes, accidents can happen anytime. The night Natasha Richardson died, my 2yo fell off the couch. I was nursing the baby and she tried pushing DS away from me so she could sit by me. Before I could grab her, she fell over the arm of the couch and hit her head on the tile. Scared DH and I. We kept her up for awhile to keep an eye on her (she had a little blood in her mouth that we couldn't figure out where it came from). She ended up being ok, 2yo bounce back pretty well, but every part of me wanted to rush to the hospital. Reminders of how something small can be serious are good for us.

How sad. It seems like such a freak accident. I feel awful for his family and friends.

There is another thread about this that I started on the Theme Parks board on August 6th when Mark fell. Here is the link in case anyone wants to read: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2250750

Another poster also posted a video of Mark performing as Mack on that thread.

Very sad tragedy. He will be missed.

Very sad. I feel for his family and loved ones.

I'll tell you one thing, I will take any bump to the head with a lot more concern--that is definitely one thing I've learned in 2009.

I've also had 2 clients older DH's have head injuries during falls recently. One died and one had to have surgery and is mending slowly.

Can you tell me what page number the video is on? Or what post number?

This is so sad!

Another subdural hematoma - so sad.

You know, this stuff scares the heck out of me. I wear a helmet EVERY TIME I ride my horses, and enforce a helmet rule with all of my students as well, but you just never know.

My heart goes out to the guy and his family.
