I am generally opposed to these. Why remake these and not make something new. Watched the Jungle Book and really enjoyed. Jon Favreau really fleshed out the story (perhaps drawing more from the original book) Just loved it. Have yet to watch the rest. Beauty and the Beast (Like the casting) but love the original so much. Wonder how it will stand up.
For me the ones that offer something new or a twist on the original are the best. I haven't seen all of the straight remakes, but I would rank them as follows:
Dumbo - It's very different and I am a fan of Burton's Style.
Maleficent - I liked the twist on the original painting Maleficent as misunderstood.
Maleficent II - Some didn't like it but to me it was a great high-fantasy type of movie.
Alice in Wonderland - It's not so much a remake as it is a sequel, but it worked pretty well I think.
Jungle Book - It had enough differences to make it a worthwhile watch though it's still very similar - the original not being all that fleshed out helps.
Alice II - It wasn't as strong as the first one but it had some enjoyable parts - it might have been better if Burton had stayed to direct.
Beauty and the Beast - I mean, it was fine, just too similar to the original and it pales in comparison, as almost anything would - the original is a masterpeice!
Cinderella - Like the above it was well done but unnecessary - it did flesh some things out a little more and I liked the inclusion of the song "Lavender's Blue" from
So Dear to My Heart.
Haven't Seen:
Lion King - It just seems too similar and I don't like the washed out, realistic look - I'll watch it someday probably.
Aladdin - This does at least look amazing visually - I may give it a watch soemtime.
Mulan - I so want to see it and I think it will likely top my list!
