They should have sold it on regular digital platforms, accessible via something other than Disney+ as well. I agree that they should not have announced the date for the free access and that the free access should have been later.

Like $29.99 now, $19.99 in a month, $9.99 in two months, then buy it on another digital form - not tied to Disney+ and the blu-ray/DVD release in December, then digital access for free 3-6 months later...

They want people to subscribe to Disney+

Like with most subscription and membership services they bank on people forgetting to cancel their subscription or seeing what’s on the service and decide its worth the pricetag. Mandalorian starts at the end of October, so people might just think that they might as well re-up their subscription for October to get Mandalorian when S2 starts.

This whole thing reminds me of ESPN making UFC fans sub to their version of plus to be able to purchase PPV's. This is just another way to scrimp a few extra scrimps out of all of us. I went to my local AMC last weekend to see New Mutants in the Dolby Vision theater and it was a wonderful experience and one that would have loved to repeat with Mulan. I felt totally safe at the theater and would feel just as safe doing the whole thing over again. Oh well...

Disney chose the wrong time to hit the PVOD market. Many people refuse to go to theaters right now, no matter how safe they are. But people are no longer stuck at home the way they were when Trolls came out. People can go places now. Some still choose not to, but its an easier sell when everyone has to stay home. Its only exasperated now that theaters are open. Tenent made 20M domestically this weekend. Thats really, really good considering the circumstances and social distancing at theaters. Paired with worldwide (mainly China), Mulan had a much better chance to reach at least the break even point as a theatrical release than just Disney+ and China market theaters

It’s true, if they wanted to go the PVOD route, they should have bitten the bullet and done it 3-4 months ago. Instead they held out hope they’d get to do a theater release, went with PVOD, but did it too late. Although, we‘ll probably never get an accurate number of how many they will sell on Disney+. Hopefully by next earnings release they’ll publicize something, but I’m betting they only release the sales figure publicly if it’s amazing. Otherwise they’ll lump it in with subscription numbers.

They could have held it off until October 16th, 2 weeks after Wonder Woman, when people will more likely go to the theaters for the first time over a movie like Tenent, and 3 weeks before Black Widow. Now obviously WW84 and Black Widow still would have to hold their release dates, and most suggests that they will, but I think its easier for people on the fence to “pass” on Tenent, but for Wonder Woman, people that are on the fence will almost certainly go. Spoiler culture with Comic Book Movies is a real issue, especially domestically. And I dont see people turning off Social Media until its released on disc/digital in order to not be spoiled

We’ll get numbers if it did well. They’ll say it didnt perform as well as they had hoped if it does bad. Subscriptions are continuously on the rise, so they’ll just mention that in the Q4 report when its brought up to soften the blow.

I just finished Mulan and it was quite colorful and animated in its presentation. Perhaps my favorite re-do since Jungle Book. I would have love to see it in 3D or on a Dolby Vision screen as the colors absolutely pop in all the right ways. I can see why they waited so long to begrudgingly release it through Disney+. This film totally could have went toe to toe with Wonder Women. It probably wouldn’t have won considering what WW represents but still had all the assets to at least give it a good fight.

I had no intention of paying extra and no particular desire to see the movie... and we still wound up buying it Saturday night. My mom wanted to see it and my sister and I were bored, so 🤷‍♀️. It was fine. I like all the nods to the original and appreciated that it wasn't a shot-for-shot remake. I'm still just not a fan of the live action remakes in general.

For whatever reason, I never saw the animated version of Mulan so I really had nothing to compare it to. I loved the live-action version! There was one scene near the beginning with CGI that really took me out of the film for a minute, but otherwise I just felt it was really well done. I bought a ton of boxed movie candy from Walmart, popped up a bunch of air-popped popcorn drizzled with melted butter, and had a really nice get-together with my ds and ddil who watched the movie along with dh, and our 13yo and 11yo. It was really nice to have a "movie night" at home. Might have to do that again sometime!

Mulan made $6M globally. It releases in China on Friday September 11th, so that’s when we’ll really know it’s potential success. Tenent made $20M domestically and $120M internationally.

I wait till all episodes are released to sign up. Right now I'm waiting for "The Boys", and "Lovecraft County" to air them. Mandalorian was weekly(maybe the 1st 3-4 episodes came out together} for S1. Can't wait!

It was every Friday for Mandalorian except for the final week where there were 2 episodes prior to the release of Rise of Skywalker. I know a lot of people that waited until all the episodes were released and subscribed through the free trial, binged them all and cancelled. There’s no free trial this to around, so they’ll at the very least make $7 from the people that plan to watch them all when the season ends. But knowing Disney, they’re going to come out with a bang in episode 1 where a lot of people are going to have FOMO and immediately subscribe.

I can't imagine waiting to watch! We are impatiently waiting for October 30th! :D

We personally love the newer (ha) trend of releasing tv shows weekly again. Anticipation -makes you feel young!

I'm always torn. Love the binge method and I think it helps for shows with slower starts. Like the Marvel Netflix shows. I know multiple people that enjoy them but said they would have dropped them if they aired weekly as the first half or middle of some of the seasons were so slow, but with the binge format you could get to the good stuff right away. But if it was weekly would have given up during the wait or simply lost interest. However, when shows are great I do love that anticipation for the next episode to see what will happen and the speculation discussion and theorizing for shows that release weekly.

I don’t like binging for 2 reasons. One, you’re almost forced to binge the entire series on night one or you’re likely going to be spoiled unless you’re not on social media. 8-12 hours of content all at once is a lot to ingest. Its almost more of a race to finish than it is just being able to sit down and enjoy the shows. Two, and this is more the company’s side of it, if your release all of your content at once, people talk about it for a week and then you don’t hear it talked about until the next season is released. Stranger Things is a perfect example of this. Whereas with a show like Mandalorian, it’s talked about for a month and a half, and even beyond that.

Anyone having problems doing the Premier Access? I went and did it, my wife got an email from Amazon that we bought it, but it's not showing up with a play button. I'm wondering if it is because we access + which is under my account but the Fire Stick is my wife's under a different email. Tried their chat but it's worthless as I couldn't get anyone and the phone told me it'd be an hour and to try the chat.

I think so...

Where are you seeing revenue numbers? All I have seen is a 68% increase in app downloads week over week.
