Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2023 Edition

Disneyland Performances of Fantasmic! have been removed from the calendar until May 5th
Wow, we were going to go in early May but then fit it in April because we got a better DLH price (convention rate), even though it was more difficult to travel in April with our schedules. Now I'm really glad we made it! And we saw Fantasmic twice!

All y’all from states where your pro teams actually win make me laugh/cry. I’m here in MN still clinging to the glory of the Twins World Series win over 30 years ago.

In the NHL playoffs, we‘re probably going to fail in the first round, beaten by our own former team 😭😭

I still miss having a professional hockey team in my state, I miss the long gone Hartford Whalers!

My wish is that this was fully 2D but this looks decent. I like this animation style more then Elemental.

I love the animation here - those backgorunds! There is definitely a painted look going on. The song sounds pretty good too, and that's going to be make-or-break for this one. They are a hooky song away from another huge hit!

I agree. I like the look that they're going for. Lately I've been enjoying animation styles of non Disney movies way more (ex. Puss in Boots Last Wish and Spiderverse) but this looks promising. My only nitpick is that I don't love the goat's voice but everything else looks good. If this gets good reviews I'll check it out.

I desperately miss 2D animation. I think style was easier to be differentiated film to film. Compare Hercules to The Lion King to Oliver & Company, whereas the CGI films all look very similar to me. They have that "oohh" factor on first watch with the realistic lighting and colors but after that they lose charm for me. I do like that they tried something a little different here, I'm just watching on my laptop so hopefully it will look more apparent to me on a larger screen. Did anyone see Puss in Boots: The Last Wish? They did some interesting stylistic stuff with their fight sequences, sort of like Into the Spider-verse look.

Man, I just can't deal with that stepped animation 12 FPS stuff. Spiderverse started a terrible trend! I just want to go buy them an RTX 4090 so they can get that frame rate up. I hate it.

I have liked the stylish choices by Dinsey recently, like giving Raya film grain, or the matte-painting like backgrounds in Strange World. Wish definitiely has a style that I like.

It’s Alan Tudyk, how can you hate it? 😁😁

I agree with everything you said here! I also dislike how many of the 3D movies look so similar to each other. I saw Puss in Boots the Last Wish in theaters and that movie looked incredible on the big screen. I am SO excited for Spiderverse 2. I'm seeing it opening day if I can!!!

Oh man I'm the opposite. I love Spiderverse's art style and am happy to see other studios using it in their films. That new TMNT movie has a similar look and it looks awesome.

I'm willing to give this one a chance. I'm seeing people on social media say this looks like a Disney Junior show and idk I don't really see it?

When the trailer first started, for the first couple of seconds I got an Elena of Avalor vibe. Obviously the animation quality much higher. Several of the Disney Junior CGI shows my kids watched (Elena and Sofia in particular) take place in old world castle settings with stone courtyards so I think it just sort of activated that in my brain.

Just showed my sister the teaser and she said the exact same thing. idk I guess I'm just optimisic about a Disney movie that is trying to do some different visually AND has a villain that isn't a twist villain or generational trauma.

I'm so excited! Plus they have way better food options than they did last year.

Nope. I can't stand it. Actually, I think it was The Lego Movie that started that. I though they were trying to look like stop-motion with that though (though the movie SHOULD have been stop-motion made with real Legos - how awesome would that be?). Of course, what Laika has done with stop-motion, it's smoother than any of these stepped animated films now anyway. Honestly, to me it jsut comes off as lazy. Here they are using 12 FPS, while James Cameron is pushing 48! Get it together, guys.
