BREAKING:

‘The Princess and The Frog’ Splash Mountain Replacement Will Open in 2024 at Disneyland, Magic Kingdom

After a fair amount of silence on the project, actress Anika Noni Rose (who voices Tiana in The Princess and the Frog) announced today on Live with Ryan and Kelly that Disney plans to open the Splash Mountain replacement attraction at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom in 2024.

Disney hasn’t announced a closing date for the classic Splash Mountain at either park, but it was suspected that the information was coming at the D23 Expo 2022 in September.
Sad to see this change but understand why it will be changed. At the same time I'm excited to see what they do with it. Love the music in Princess and the Frog and I really hope the "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" finale is turned into something equally as amazing and energetic.

Riding Splash a couple weeks ago, DH and I were pondering the refurb, and it occurred to us that they might just do a light ‘bayou’ retheme rather than a full on redo. Change out most of the sections to be elements/characters that could be found in the bayou section of P&tF, add a couple frog animatronics in each scene to replace the rabbit/bear/fox, leave the riverboat section and theme it more Mardi Gras, change out the soundtrack. Leave the track and most of the sets the same. They wouldn’t even necessarily need to change out the logs, the same ride vehicles would be fine.

If the animatronics are all pre-made before the ride shuts down for refurb, you could change the ride over pretty quickly, or at least quickly compared to the length of time they needed for the Energy to GotG replacement. I’m seeing this as more a light retheming of the same type as when they redid Norway to Frozen, but with less actual work involved. How long did that one take? Anyone remember?

I'm looking forward to the retheme! The music from Princess and The Frog is so good, can't wait to hear it on the ride! Maybe they're making animatronics and set pieces now so the refurb won't take as long? But, 2024 seems very soon, so I'm going to have to jump on Splash Mountain one more time this month just in case they close it soon!

Maelstrom closed October 5, 2014 and Frozen Opened in June 21, 2016 so less than 2 years to do that re theme.

Look at how cheaply that was done I have feeling it will be the same for Splash. A cheap overlay. That was different time. Since then look at how slow they are at finishing things.

As long as they do it well, I don't mind the retheme.

Honestly, what's with the hate for Frozen? It is pretty well-done in my opinion, with several nice animatronics. The ice palace scene is amazing! I mean, Maelstrom was already a little on the cheap side and I feel FEA is more exciting overall.

It's a cheap overlay. Here's a good video to show what I mean.

Well, it was always going to be an overlay. I just don't quite get the "cheap" part. Sure, it wasn't the most expensive, cutting edge thing ever, but it doesn't have to me. It has what it needs, and is artistically strong. The Elsa animatronic is awesome! It works quite well. The quality of a ride is not directly correlated to how much money is spent on it. There is of course some impact, but it can vary case by case. I am quite happy with the result in the case of FEA.

I also think WebSlingers at DCA is a cheap overlay of Midway Mania. Part of it is I remember how innovative Imagineering was. Other then Rise, I not impressed lately. The coaster industry has been more impressive to me with all the inovation they have been doing.

This seems kind of soon TBH. I assumed this would open way later than 2024 seeing as how much work would have to be done to have both versions rethemed (as of right now the version in Tokyo is staying Splash). I'm not opposed to the retheme if it's done well but I hope this doesn't end up being screen based or anything like that.
Maybe they’ve been working on the animatronics offsite and most of what needs to happen onsite will be installation and testing?

WEBSlingers is like TSMM 2.0, and while it's not a favorite of mine, it's still plenty popular. There is a demand for that type of ride, though I might have used it in a park without TSMM already. Still, it's well done quality wise. It's like a movie - not everything even needs a high budget, as long as it tells the story well.

I hope so. I know the actual track won't be rethemed and it's just the sets. My biggest fear is that they'll add screens into it like Disney has done for most of their newest rides. I also don't really want the animatronics they do add to have the screen faces like in Frozen but that's a personal preference more than anything.

Yeah, the screen faces are weird sometimes

I'll believe it when I see it. It is taking 5 years to for them to duplicate Tron in MK. Having said that, the theming fits so well in DL (still not sold on MK), it will be a great addition :)
