Hi all, I'm planning our first family trip to WDW in April 2005(Spring Break) for 4-5 days. Me, DH, DD (4), DS (1). I would like to know what are must-do's for theme parks & shows. How much planning is really necessary...in other word's do I need to have a strict itinerary...I want this to be "magical" for my kids, especially my daughter princess:

Here's what I know now: I know we have to go to MK, I'd like to see the Lion King show and my daughter has to see the princesses & both kids need to see Mickey & Minnie!!! Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks!

I don't think you have to have a "strict" intinerary, but you definitely need some kind of plan. I had a general intinerary that was subject to change, but didn't plan out every hour and it worked fine.

Keep in mind MK is really a two day park, it's huge and there is ALOT to see.

I would think you could skip Epcot with a 4 year old and 1 year old and only being there 4-5 days.

MGM doesn't have as much little kid stuff as MK, but Playhouse Disney is VERY cute and your DD will LOVE Voyage of the Little Mermaid and the Beauty and Beast Show.

You can catch the Princesses and Mickey and Minnie at Toon Town Fair in Fantasyland at MK and consider a character meal. Chef Mickey's Breakfast at the Contemporary is wonderful, especially for little kids. We saw Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy and Chip and Dale there and the kids adored it. The food was great too!

The Festival of the Lion King show at AK is definitely not to be missed and I loved the Jammin' Jungle Parade, they are on my must see list for sure. The Tarzan Rocks show at AK is really good too, but Festival of the Lion King is my absolute favorite.

I believe it's always a good idea to know where you're going. Get a guide book and get familiar with the layout of the parks. Then figure out what you HAVE to see and what would be NICE to see.List the top 5 things in each park and plan to do those things for sure. Then everything else will just be gravy.

With young children you are going to have to plan rest periods. Even adults get overwhelmed with WDW. Make sure you bring plenty of bottle water and fresh fruit. Remember--never get too tired or too hungry. And treat blisters immediately.

Realize that you cannot do everything. Some rides and shows will not be suitable for your kids--skip them.Think of this as your FIRST trip to WDW--you will be coming back,so don't make yourself miserable. If the kids are breaking down(or you are!) quit for the day.The water will be nice that time of year so plan to swim at midday and nap. Better to leave 'em wanting more...

Were were there last may with children the same ages. I agree that Epcot is not very kid friendly, but if you and hubby want to see it plan maybe a 1/2 day visit. We went there first. Rode test track and mission space with parent swap of corse. Looked through innoventions briefly. Then we moved on..... Rested and went to MK.

Are you on site or off. We always did a rest period in the middle of the day.

Do not try to go too much. If the kids are un happy then everyone is unhappy. Have a plan. We visited MK almost everyday. My DS (4 at the time) loved MGM, but he loved tower of terror. Playhouse Disney was wonderful for both children. The 1yo will be able to ride many rides.

Most important have fun.

I agree with most of the above posters as well.
We returned from a trip in August with my DD(3.5) and DS(.7) at the time.

You might consider adding,if you have the funds, to have breakfast at Cinderella's Round Table. If you are not familiar with PS's (priority seating), you may want to read up on that before attempting a reservation for it. The methods listed for obtaining a PS for CRT do indeed work. You can see that thread here:

Epcot doesn't have a lot of rides for the children that age, but there are tons of characters there. They ride around on a British "double-decker" bus or come out of a particular country. So they should not be completely bored. My daugter had a good time. She also participated in the Kidcot stations at each of the countries. This is a place they receive something from the country and is attached to their mask with they color at each of the stations. Having said that, if you only have 4 or 5 days, I would make sure that I did as much as possible at MK. That offers the most for childeren that age.

Character meals - the pictures will be priceless! I'd also suggest taking a night off from the parks and going to the Hoop Dee Do Review. It's my family's favorite show! I think your 4 year old will really like it.

Have fun!

Oh - leave time for lots of swimming.

Make sure to take advantage of early entry if you are staying on WDW property. And if your DD likes Tinkerbell, one day get to Magic Kingdom when it opens and run straight for Tinkerbells Treasures. Ask if your DD can "wake up" Tinkerbell. The first little girl in the store each day gets to. :)

There are actually lots of things to do at the parks that are not specifically "kid" oriented. At MGM there are TONS and TONS of characters they will know from the more recent movies, Playhouse Disney, Little Mermaid, the Muppets, etc. My 2 and 4 year old love the backlot tour because they get to ride in a tram (yes - I am sometimes tempted to ride around the MK parking lot all day to see if they ever tire of the trams :P) and of course Fantasmic. At EPCOT there is the Living Sea (in which most of the attractions are based on Nemo including a new one where Crush is interactive and answers questions from children) and Imagination where you still get to met Figment and play at the end (sound boards on the floor, areas where you can make Figment play instruments by moving your arms through an open area surrounded by sensors - pretty fun on a hot day especially) and Innoventions where they can play and touch things. Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom are mostly for the smaller kiddies but make sure you read about the rides in a guide book or ask a Cast Member what the ride entails if your children might be sensitive to lights or loud noises. OUr first couple of trips, we stayed away from things like Goofy's Barnstormer to make sure they didn't get ridephobic, and now that we have ridden it once, all they want to do is run back through the line and ride again. You know your child best. If you are unsure of a ride, either you or your hubby preview it alone first while everyone else gets a snack.

Do drink lots of water. Do get up early enough to get to the parks when they open. Lots of people don't and by the time they get up and have breakfast, you will have ridden 3-4 rides and be ready for a break. TAKE BREAKS! You don't have to do it all in one day. If your children will sleep or at least be quiet, then there are lots of quiet places you can pull your strollers to in the shade and take a rest time (I am so lucky in that my boys will sleep when it is nap time no matter where we are so we just get a cold drink and let them sleep and people watch - that way we ALL get rest) or go back to the hotel, have a bite and take a nap. Let everyone else sweat it out in the heat of the day while you are recharging!!! The pools are fantastic, but I will admit we rarely take the time to use them. Learn how to use the Fast Pass system and NEVER be without one (unless somehow the parks are not crowded for that day!). If you want do to Character Meals, call 90 days out and book them. (big hint here - if you can get into one before the park opens then you will have a chance to do things like take a picture or two of the castle with no one there and you will be ready to ride when breakfast is over). Take the minimum amount of stuff with you into the parks. Sunscreen, sunglasses and hats will be a must as will diapers, water, snacks, etc, but if you think you can get by without it DO! Those bags get so heavy by the end of the day and even if you have a stroller to help haul the load, you will end up standing with it all in your lap or on your shoulders on the bus back to your hotel and that is no fun! Take multiple pairs of shoes for each person because it does rain there often and wet shoes the next day - blah!

We don't plan too specifically for our trips other than usually one Character Meal and which parks which days. I do offer my children choices about rides and if they want to meet characters and they know that sometimes things change when we get closer and see the line, etc...so all of us being flexible is the key. One thing we do (and its a bit of bribery and a bit or reward all mixed in one) is go to Downtown Disney before leaving and let them pick one thing from the Lego store. This keeps me from needing to buy LOTS of souvineers because I remind them that they will get something on that day and it also helps me to remind them that I need good behavior when we are in such a big place. They love that store and your 4 year old son probably will too. There is a HUGE playard full of legos and play equipment (its free) there that keeps my 2 boys entertained for a while and allows me to stroll and shop while hubby keeps and eye on them. A last day treat for us all.

Hope you have a blast!!!

Character meals and don't forget the camera. My kids loved the Sci-Fi Dine In Theater when they were younger also.

Carousel of Progress, Tomorrowland Transit Authority both of which the parent will appreciate, and Dumbo.

with young kids, make sure that you eat dinner early in the afternoon....places fill up fast...make your PS NOW!!!

take breaks, bring snacks....when they want to go, go......sometimes we just park hopped & the bus ride was the rest they needed. my 3yr old LOVE epcot's fireworks.
