Disney Marketing Geniuses and Tangled

When Disney announced that they were changing the title of the Rapunzel movie to Tangled, I was skeptical. But now I see it was actually a stroke of genius. My DS 8 REFUSED to sit through the Princess and the Frog because it was "too girly".

This week we went on a road trip and we had about 25 DVD's with us. With all those choices, DS watched Tangled at least once a day for 6 days.

Disney obvoiusly saw the mistakes it made marketing the Princess and the Frog and learned from it.

Yes, one of my students analyzed the marketing strategy used in the Tangled campaign. She pointed out that although they tried direct TV ads to boys, the merchandise was almost exclusively for girls. So boys buy tickets but girls are still the queens (princesses, more aptly) of merch.

Great point! My DS5 has been watching Tangled quite a bit, too. He loves Flynn. Oddly enough though, DS actually thinks Rapunzel's the best because she can swing on her hair and she hits people with frying pans (slapstick comedy gets them every time).

In fact, after watching Tangled one night DS asked to see Cinderella for the first time - I think he thought the other princesses would be as kick-ss. He was disappointed! But he loved the mice.

Show him Mulan. I think he'll be suitably impressed with her fighting skills! Just tell him this movie shows a girl even tougher than Rapunzel! I think he might like that.

Tangled is the one movie all the kids want to watch over and over (and over and over *and over and over* ) I totally agree that Flynn makes that movie for the boys and it made me look back at the princes through my son's eyes and see how lame most of them are to a boy.

I agree, tangled i thought was going to be like princess and the frog (which i did watch since it's on netflix.) And it was actually a lot better than i was expecting. Victoria absolutely LOVES it!

My nephew loves Tangled too, it's nice because he and his little sister can watch it together. It's a shame though that after successfully marketing it to boys and girls they have taken away Flynn from the Rapunzel Meet & Greet at MK.

Ditto on all this in regards to Tangled being for everyone. Even me, a 43 year old Dad, LOL.

I love all Disney movies involving the princesses, you have to when you have one, , but I really, really enjoy Tangled. IMHO, it's their best effort yet. I love the story, the characters etc. etc. They got it JUST right.
