What is the rule for kids on busses? Both of my kids will still be in booster seats (backless) at the time of travel. It's the law here in Michigan that they have to have a booster seat. I want to keep my kids safe, but I certainly can't be taking car seats to the theme parks. What about the bus ride from the airport? We'll be staying on Disney property and will be picked up by the magic express. Do they have booster seats? Thanks

No carseats on DME. There aren't even any seatbelts. If you bring them you can stow them under the bus for the trip between the airport and resort. No carseats on busses to the parks, either.

You can't use carseats on any of the buses, because none of the buses have seatbelts (i.e., there would be no way to tether the carseat to the bus seat). And besides, the only reason to use a booster seat is to give the child a "boost" to be high enough to safely use the shoulder belt. That's also why booster seats are no good for airliners ... no shoulder belts.

Disney's Magical Express is the transportation from the airport to your resort and back. Disney Transport is the transportation from your resort to the theme parks (and water parks, and Downtown Disney) and back. DME buses are plush motorcoaches. Disney Transport buses are like city buses.

I doubt it's the law in Michigan that kids have to be in booster seats while on buses. Think about city buses, the buses that run in big cities. There are no special safety regulations for kids on those buses, either. It's no different in Disney World.:goodvibes

I guess you're right that it's not a law that kids be in car seats on buses. I just don't get it. Why is it okay/safe to ride a bus without even a seat belt? What if there is an accident? It sure will make it easier to not have to bring car seats though. Thanks!

My DGS4 considers the "no carseat" part one of his favorite parts of the trip. :rotfl2:

First, motorcoach travel rivels air travel when it comes to safety. Second, a 3000lb car vs a 20 ton bus is quite a mismatch. Basically a speed bump, not likely to cause much harm to the bus passengers. Keep in mind, bus accidents are very rare.

The most important thing anyone can do to provide safety for your children is to make them sit, on their bottoms in the seat. Kids on their knees and such is where chance of a problem can occur even from a quick stop or unexpected braking.

EXACTLY.

Except in the very very rare case of a rollover, bus passengers will hardly notice it if an accident occurs. I not only speak of physics, I speak from experience.

When 2 cars hit, a tremendous amount of kinetic energy is transfered from one vehicle to the other -- basically, the cars (which weigh nearly the same as each other) and all of their contents (including humans) go BOOM.

When a car and bus hit, the huge mass of the bus absorbs all but it little smidge of the kinetic energy transfered to it from the car. I like localdriver's analogy of hitting a speed bump. The energy just doesn't get transfered to the passengers, and consequently the passengers don't get thrown or even substantially jostled. I remember being in a car vs. bus accident when I was in middle school. A car was merging into our lane (we were on a highway) and smashed into the right front of the bus, near the door. I swear, I thought we hit a pothole at first. The car was in terrible shape, but there were no injuries on the bus.

Think of 2 toddlers running into each other at full speed. They'll both get hurt or at least momentarily stunned. Now think of a 20 pound toddler runing full speed into the beefy leg of a 200 pound man. The kid might be hurt and will be stunned, but the man will hardly be affected by it.

On a slightly different note ... not to try to get morbid for a moment, but I remember a well-publicized bus crash in Alabama last year -- a bus with about 36 people drove off a 30-foot-high overpass and I think 6 people died. I am not minimizing the tragedy for the affected people and their families and friends. But looking at the numbers, 1 in 6 passengers died. Imagine a car or SUV driving off a 30-foot-high overpass ... I seriously think that more than 1 of those 6 people would die in such a plunge.

I could go into more detail with some stuff, but I'm beginning to bore myself, so I can just imagine my affect on you right now .... :rotfl:

Every year, millions of parents trust the safety of their millions of precious children to the buses and bus drivers associated with Walt Disney World. Come join the club!

My daughter just turned one, and will only be about 16 months when we travel with Disney, taking the bus down to get on the cruise ship. Will we need/be able to use the car seat for that trip? And does any one know if it would be needed for the bus rides for the excursions?

As stated in other posts above, there is no way to secure car seats into buses. Therefore, they can't be used.

If this is a serious concern for you, your only alternative is to rent a car. Millions of people have their infants on big city buses every day, and millions oof people every year do it at WDW. Of course, just because other people do it doesn't mean you have to feel comfortable doing it, too. Like I said, your only good alternative, if you are uncomfortable with the lack of car seat, is to rent a car.

And ... also ...

I!

I think that was in Atlanta. And it was a unique situation. I doubt most folks in a car would have lived. I also don't think there are ANY left exits like this anywhere in the Orlando area.. And actually while this has increased a push for seatbelts at least one passenger survived because he was thrown free. Had he still been in his front row seat... (don't ask!)

(There might have been one in Alabama, but I think this was ours. It was the college baseball team!)

but... wait for it.......

OK, I think I know what you are referring to. A bus carrying the Bluffton U. baseball team went off an overpass in Atlanta in March 07. 5 baseball players plus the driver and driver's wife died. At least one other player is permanently disabled. The driver went up an exit ramp to an overpass which was poorly marked and then went over the other side. This was big news here in NW Ohio because Bluffton is here.
The cause of the crash was ruled last week to be partly the badly marked signage (it was still dark out) but also some driver error.
This kind of thing happens so rarely I wouldn't be worried about it. I don't know how many times my kids have been on a WDW bus--the first trip they were 2,5 and 8--and the takeoffs and landings of our flights make me WAY more nervous. And the bus drivers there are very familiar with the terrain and the area, unlike this driver.
The biggest risk we have on bus rides is that the kids (at night anyway) usually fall fast asleep and then are very cranky going into our hotel!

As stated, there are no seat belts on any buses. Car seats cannot be used without seat belts.

This has been the national debate on school buses for years. If they must be in seatbelts in a car, why can they be beltless on the school bus? Some say the bus is actually safer without the belt. :confused3
