Disney Magic lack of "Pixie dust"

We were on the TA cruise too...
We tought it was amazing, our first cruise ever!
Our servers were good but not excellent...
It didn't bother us, because it was only at meal time...
Our room host was amazing and most of the cruise staff aswell...
Have loved the cruise every minute and ended up with some friendships with staff and travellers...

In which case, I think it's equally presumptuous to assume the bear's owner paid for it to be a cruise Guest then as well...?

Nobody knows the full story, and unagreeable as a stuffed bear being served at a dinner table, taking up a chair in the theatre or using a chair at SB is to most of us, I'm sure nobody on here can categorically say the Lady didn't pay for "it" to cruise as a person.

Strange yes, but anyone that has visited a Seniors home with people with alzheimer's, and suffering with dementia, whatever makes them happy is the best for them.

But as I said before, any extra attention, shouldn't be at the detriment to others.

Ex Techie :)

I guess the only way I can surmise what I was trying to say is this is that no one Guest should dominate a cruise or the attention of servers or other CM's. (Human or otherwise ;) )
But special consideration to those that have other needs should be given, even if those special needs are not always openly visible to the others around them without knowing all of the circumstances.

Ex Techie :)
:goodvibes Funny you say that....I WORK in a skilled nursing facility ("seniors home") and have had a fairly long career in MH/DD management, so I genuinely appreciate your sensitivity to this woman's possible issues. I never said I found the bear's presence disagreeable; more like humorous and slightly sad. But it never should have taken service or attention away from other customers or caused a server to be chastised. This wasn't a service animal or aide, just her idea of fun, it seems..."quirky".... from what other passengers have said and what we personally observed. I did speak with someone who was on their plane over, so it went with them from home . I can't imagine how they managed...we struggled with our luggage, that's for sure, and this bear was quite large. Our beach chair on CC was just behind them for about an hour, so my DH watched as the lady and the bear sunbathed. Attention-seeking? Undoubtedly. Wacky? Yep. Mental illness? Probably not to the degree that others may be thinking. But, no one really knows the whole story :sad2:.

Coming out of lurkerdom to say that we were also seated a table away from the bear. My kids were fascinated by the whole thing (in fact the bear even came over to visit our table one night). Based on what the bear's owner told me, the bear 'writes' their holiday newsletter and so therefore has to have pictures taken hither and yon. The last night the owner explained she hadn't intended to take it to every meal but the wait staff had gotten such a kick out it that they did? :confused3 It was a bit odd, though she seemed nice enough and not mentally disabled in anyway.

We did the EBTA last year (2010) and I would say there was definitely something up with the water issues this cruise. The 8th floor had notices up of a 2.5 hr water shut off when we were in tortolla, though I'm not sure our cabin was ever actually shut off.

My two bigger complaints were that the in room movies didn't change between the two weeks and we have 3 little ones.... So if I see Rango or Kung Fu panda 2 again I might jump out a window...... Also, I had a major wipeout running in port in Madeira, bad enough that I went to medical where for $143 they glanced at me and told me to go take a shower to clean up and gave me advil. They barely offered to check my broken toe, and their attitude was rushed as they were going to lunch. I got more assistance from all the good Samaritans who helped me when I fell (and then who sought me out later to make sure I was ok). I am an avid runner (1500 - 1800 mi a year) and this was a nasty tumble. I had road rash complete with gravel in the cuts on a large section of my chest, a bruised rib, badly banged up knee, and broken toe. Let me tell ya, getting the gravel out on my own was fun.... NOT! I did complain to guest services but its an outside vendor so their hands were tied. I chose to let my frustration go and liberally enjoyed a sangria cure in port.

Overall it was a fantastic vacation.... Though like others we don't plan to cruise Disney again next year.

Erin
So that explains our murky water :headache: one day in our deck 8 cabin, although we were never notified of a disruption in service. I can't recall which day it was, although it cleared up quickly.

It took us three separate viewings to see an entire movie on ABC Family (middle, beginning and end, in that order), and I still don't know what the title of it was, but by the second week, I was truly hoping for some variety :headache:.

So sorry to hear about your accident....OUCH! Glad it wasn't any worse. I heard someone had a nasty ankle sprain in Virgin Gorda, although I don't know if it was a Disser. I guess my creaky, sore knees don't begin to compare :lmao:.

We just returned to reality this morning from an Eastern cruise on the Magic. I will admit, I have not read all the way through this thread but wanted to add my observations about the Magic needing some pixie dust.

This was our 3rd cruise on the Magic, we go every 2 years, so last cruise was in 2009. We had a great time, but the service is really lacking and the up keep of the ship is really going down hill.

First off, our dining team was horrible. Our server was extremely slow! He was not personable at all. He missed 2 nights because he got something in his eye. We were actually much happier with the 2 different people that replaced him those 2 nights. We had 2 kids at our table and I don' think he even spoke to them at any point. We were always on time to dinner and always the last one to leave the dining room at 8:00. Yes, dinner lasted at least 2 hours and 15 minutes, late seating was starting to arrive by the time we left most nights. We asked for things to speed up, but it never happened. I addressed many other issues with the Head Server and again nothing ever happened to even try to resolve these issues. Our only saving grace was our assistant server. He was wonderful and even tried his best to pick up the lack of service from the server. Yes, I know the server is busy, but the magic just wasn't there. We had newbie cruisers with us also, and they couldn't believe how horrible the service was and they hadn't even experienced how great it use to be.

As for the ship, I think she still looks pretty good overall. But there are a lot of issues. I don't think the air conditioner worked in a lot of areas. It was hot in a lot of public areas. I have never sweat so much. Our stateroom was hot. We called about it multiple times but never saw anyone trying to fix the ac and was never called to see if it was working again. I also know that there were some rooms that flooded on the 5th or 6th floor, can't remember which. Not sure how bad it was, just knew people were moving. Also noticed the carpet worn, ripped and badly stained in a lot of areas.

These are just some things we noticed. Not trying to complain about them, there were still many many great things about the Magic. We love the Magic and Wonder.

We had a great trip overall. Just wish that magic was still on the Magic.

Have just completed Disney Magic Transatlantic, our third, and the standards are slipping.

Our wait staff did not work as a team, it should not have been difficult, they only had seven people to serve, this also happened on out EBTA in May!

It was brought to the attention of the Food and beverage manager who confirmed that more training was needed. Things improved for two days and then tailed off!

It is a pity as we love Disney but have now booked our next cruise with Celebrity.

It was like ground hog day with little changing with regard to guest entertainers and the the same films on TV from May EBTA.

I spoke with several people who only cruise Disney and agreed with me that the ship needed a good sprinkling of Pixie Dust to bring it back to the way things used to be.

We enjoyed the cruise and the interaction with the majority of the crew.

To quote Disney Cruise Line President -The number one differentiator of all the things we do is our cast and crew members. we train them on guest service guidelines and intermix this with with something we call aggresive hospitality, you only have a short time to build a meaningful and special relationship with guests and we have a primary focus on finding the best crew members and investing in training them.

Lets hope the training improves.

Regards

Chris and Yvonne

I hope you have passed this on the corporate DCL. I know they would like to hear from any and all passengers who had a less than magical experience. Sorry it was not all you were used to.

:scared1:
Totally agree with you, the main problem on the ship was what my wife and I referred to as Disney snobs who felt they deserved better treatment than everyone else, just because they have been on multiple Disney cruises. My worst experience on the ship was when someone with a Platinum lanyard pushed by 4 year old away from a box of craft items because they were looking for a specific item for their villain mask, when the CM (James, who really is a wonderful CM) saw this, he stepped in and helped my son out, but all the while the individual was talking about how kids were ruining their cruise...

One final thing, I will say I felt bad for a cast member who had to hear one person cry and whine because someone was looking at a menu and it was in the line of her shot of Peter Pan. I will say the good far outweighed the bad though and there are some fantastic people cruising who are really great people. I liken my encounters with these individuals par for the course when doing a Disney cruise..

Ouch! :scared1:  I love it when people call it like they see it! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the perspective! Sometimes when you are on these boards, you assume people have the same Disney standards as you do. I didn't take this perspective into consideration. I am thinking of booking the Magic for my next cruise and a haggard looking ship will really make me mad. I am always super nice to CM's because I have been in the hospitality industry so I know what they go through. Never had a bad CM experience at any Disney product. ;)

Not bragging, just saying. I am finding this thread extremely entertaining.

I have never worn nor will ever wear a lanyard. Why? Because I find them annoying. I also find it annoying to carry around a purse. That is why I wear...are you ready for this...a fanny pack!:scared1: Yes, that is me slumming with first time cruisers.:rotfl:

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao::banana::love:

That by far is the best post yet!!!!!

I wonder about the complaints about the servers. When we went in June, we requested our server and he and the assistant server were excellent (and so was our head server who came by to our table every night and joked around with us too...) But I know that our server told us he was heading home for a break at the end of August and was not going to make the transatlantic. Our assistant server told us she was going to be extending her time so she could go back home for Christmas, implying she was supposed to go home at the end of August too.

I dunno ... but that sounds almost like a few of the servers left the ship before the crossing and maybe that's added to some of the confusion and downturn in service. Is this possible? Now, that being said, it's not an excuse for bad service but it could explain why it was bad for some and ok for others.

OMG, I wonder if this was the same lady I am about the write about? James was wonderful, LOVED HIM. The rest of the entertainment staff was just as great. Carly, Lori, Sherielyn, and TJ with James, made the trip very very magical.

Maybe not appropriate on this thread, or not even appropriate at all, but the curiosity of just how bad this Guest was is getting the better of me! popcorn::

Ex Techie :)

Here is the long and short of it for ya! :thumbsup2

This lady with the bear.....

I'm going to reserve any judgement on the lady for the time being.
I have asked for more information, maybe curiosity, maybe other reasons.

I'm sure we can all appreciate that a grown up with a bear is unusual, and some people have health problems.

The extent of the persons reasoning to take a bear to dinner and have it waited on is a question I'm not sure can be answered at face value.

Ex Techie :)

Please note that the lady I am about to write about is NOT the lady with the bear. This is a completely different person. She has been on between 5 and 10 cruises as she was wearing a gold lanyard.

Ok here goes:

1st encounter: they announced that on the 11th they were going to hand out wrist bands for the release of the TA exclusive pin at 2pm. I went to line up at Mickey Mates at about 1:15 as I know these lines can get long early. I walked in and asked Tom where the line was and he stated that there was not one yet. I asked him where he would like the line to be and I would start it. He showed me where to start it and which direction that he would like it to go. I said ok and that I would sit there and start the line. At this point, this woman, who was sitting in the chairs and tables for Preludes, turns and said in a harsh voice "I am first in line". I said ok that is fine, but I would sit there to start the line so that people would know where to line up. She then stated again in a very condisending harsh voice "But I am first". I again said that was fine that she could sit there and I would let her in front of me when the time came. I said this because she seemed a bit older than me, like in her late 50's early 60's and could have had a injury or not as spry as others to sit on the floor. (Now let me say, had I known what she was really like and how 'spry' she really was, I would have made her come and sit her *** down to be 1st :lmao: )

Second encounter: This took place at a Bingo session, cannot remember which one. I was walking up to purchase my cards when they started to sell them. She was sitting at the front table nearest the walk way. As I got to her table, she turned her head, look straight at me, jumped up and bumped my shoulder and cut in front of me. No excuse me or sorry I bumped you. I again let this one slide and just bought my cards after her. What burns my butt is that she won one of the sessions. After this, I would wait to buy my cards until she was done as I was getting less patient with her behavior.

Third encounter: This one was not me but I witnessed it. At another session of bingo, we were waiting for sales to begin again and I saw her again butt in on someone. They were up there asking a question when the sales started and so they just went ahead and asked to purchase. She had walked up behind them and stated that she was first. They looked at her weird and she said, I was in the room first so I am first inline. They again looked at her weird but let her go in front of them.

Fourth encounter: At one session of bingo, we had to move to the Promenade Lounge as Rockin Bar D was booked. My daughter was with us and was curious about how Bingo Betty worked (the bingo machine for those who have not played before) so we were up in front talking to Carly about it. Kirsten was standing to the side of Betty and I was half way in front of the sales terminal. When Carly stated that they would start sales in a minute, this woman came up and again bumped me out of the way and into my daughter to be first. She did it hard and there was no "excuse me are you in line" or anything, just a hard push and a dirty look so you know she did it intentionally. Luckily, I was able to keep Kirsten from being pushed into Betty, which was at about neck/lower face level. I was so pissed off, I had to excuse myself and Kirsten to go back to the table at which point I told my husband to go buy the cards as I was too pissed off to deal with it properly. After bingo, I had to take some things back to the room and went to the elevators to go to deck 8. She was standing there, so I took the stairs from deck 3 all the way up to deck 8 because I knew that it was a bad idea for me to get into an elevator with her at that point.

Final encounter: This was the last session of bingo. We got there early to get a good table. They were having a dance lesson in Rockin Bar D at the time. JT came around and let us know that they were going to be clearing the room in after the lesson (about 15 min later) to get it ready for bingo. He then moved on to tell all the other people in the room. We got up and went outside to line up with most of the others in the room. 15 min later, when they asked those that stayed behind to leave, she came out of the room and stood right by the door. At this point I was done with her entitled behavior and I said that the end of the line was back there. She then insisted that she was in the room first and that she was first in line. I went to say something else and my husband asked to let it go so I shut up. She did not. She went on about how if I did not see her enter the room then she was there first and that she deserved to be in the front of the line. After about 2 minutes, I calmly said to her "I stopped talking to you, please stop talking to me". It was at this point that she called me a B***H. This is when my husband got between us and pushed me back. He knew it was about to get out of hand. The lady behind us started trying to calm me down saying that she had been cussing out other passengers and CM's and that she was not worth the effort because it was only going end badly. As this point the woman was then yelling about how big a B***h I was and going on and on about it. This is when I learned that she had been saying obcenities to the Bingo CM's when they did not call the right numbers. I have to say that I did not hear this first hand as I sat as far away as I could but another lady join the conversation to confirm that she had cussed at the CM's during Bingo and several other passengers throughout the cruise, including the first womans husband for an infraction that he did not even know he commited.

Since this was the last sea day and the second to the last day on the ship, I was able to avoid her the rest of the cruise. This type of behavior, unfortunately, is never addressed on the cruise because the staff cannot do or say anything about it and other passengers usually let it slide as it does turn ugly like it did in the last encounter.

So this is my story and I hope that you did not find it too boring. Please note that this did not spoil my trip. I have many many many more magical stories that far out weigh the bad and only typed this out because it was requested. I was only using this as an example of the entitlement mentality that was displayed by other passengers that was just over the top.

Wow .... just ... wow.

Not only did this woman not have any pixie dust, I think she ate Tinkerbell. :sad2:

Oh.My.God!!!!! :lmao::lmao::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Ok, just shared your posts with DH and he asked if I mentioned that she hated sea days and that she thought the food sucks on DCL. He heard her telling other passengers this information.

I said no this was the first I heard this one. What the H*** is she doing on the cruise then? Especially one that is 14 days long with 8 sea days. What a wack a doodle.

nick262,

I can only hope that even though the CM's didn't react or make any obvious challenges towards this "Lady's" behavior on the cruise, but that she has a mark against her name for it now, after the cruise finished, and massive kudos to you, your husband and DD for being the adult's in those situation's.
Hopefully she will be black listed from sailing on future DCL cruises.

And thank you for fully explaining the event's.
That woman is truly horrible, disrespectful, aggressive and I'm glad you have your patience, and not mine!

Ex Techie :)

We've encountered some weirdos, but the reverse of what is being reported here...it was like "platinum jealousy." We were cruising shortly after the various CC levels were introduced--I think December when the levels started in late October 2009. We went to Parrot Cay for the embarkation lunch, and my DD was wearing her lanyard. The intent wasn't to show off, but simply because it is a convenient place to put one's stuff! She had gone to the buffet line for something when an older woman got extremely ugly with her--things about how she must have taken "mostly short cruises," (no, ma'am, I've only been on the Wonder once), her mother must be a TA (no), and just plain obnoxious. DD commented that a CM was trying to swap out an empty dish and the woman wouldn't get out of his way either. The same woman saw me later in the cruise and was equally hateful.

First of all, my cruising history is between me and DCL and is frankly no one else's business. Secondly, if the woman wants a platinum lanyard, cruise 11 times! Thirdly, if someone has an issue, don't take it out on a teen! Fortunately mine was mature enough and had enough manners to handle it.

Nut cases come in all varieties--first time cruisers and 25th time cruisers. Maybe we should all relax and chill out a bit! And keep the darn kids out of the adult areas! :goodvibes

Would a policy and several sign's like this help? ;)

Ok here goes:

1st encounter:

This person must be very unhappy; I am sorry for her. Life can be so much fun.

Do NOT let her control your life. She is not worth remembering, talking about, or getting upset over during the confrontations. Cruises on Disney are a blast; let the jerks cuss, cut in line, reserve deck chairs, save seats, ignore dress codes, whatever. They must live with themselves; the 99% of your cruise which is away from this is a delight, let the 1% encountering them stay at 1%.

Your memory of the cruise should not include her; her memory certainly doesn't include you!

Ah :) Now it make sense. This woman went to Guest Services to complain. We were waiting there and she was ranting and raving at the CM there. She really gave it to this poor CM. We then went to the desk and my spouse commended the CM on keeping her cool. Turns out this woman is the daughter of a well known movie star. She is a frequent guest, but is always an issue. I saw her later on Deck 9 involved in a VERY loud cell phone conversation about (No I'm not kidding) constipation and getting bran. It was inane, and I couldn't believe her. The bear lady I think just liked the attention. This one however had serious issues.
