I woke up around 2AM. One of the kids was moaning – I’m a very light sleeper. I started to doze off again when my DD (thankfully on the bottom bunk) hurled all over. Yuck! I jumped up, woke her and pushed her towards the bathroom. She made it in there just before she blew again. Unfortunately the toilet seats on the ship like to be in a closed position. Yuck! I opened the lid (Yuck!); she blew one more time. I’m standing there thinking, “Is it virus?” “Is it bad food?” “Was it too much Excitement?” “Do I call the steward?”

My DH and I decided to clean up the mess. Fortunately I’m a borderline obsessive cleaner. I had laundry soap, Lysol, etc. We cleaned up all the mess and some mess that wasn’t ours (I think I mentioned on day 1 the cabin wasn't as clean as I had hoped it would be). Yes, we cleaned all of it - as quietly as possible. I washed the sheets, blankets, bedspread and PJs in hot (surprisingly hot!) water and “Tide with bleach”. We cleaned the carpet, bathroom walls, and floor - first with hot soapy water, then with Lysol. My DS hadn’t moved from the top bunk and actually fell back asleep. My DD showered. We hung the laundry in the shower and around the shower. Thank goodness I had plenty of clothespins. We all climbed into the big bed. Thank goodness we're small people. I lay there wondering what to do. At first I was really angry (too angry, but remember it was now after 3AM and I had just spent an hour in a cleaning frenzy). I was thinking how dare they let people sail on a ship that is still making people sick! We were getting off the ship ASAP and I should sue! I just knew we were all going to get sick and spend the week stuck in our cabin.

As I calmed down I started think about the timeline. I’m an engineer and tend to over-analyze (you all are learning all my faults). I remembered how as I child I was often sick just from excitement (birthdays 7 through 9); my daughter had been very excited about the cruise. It didn’t seem like we had been onboard long enough for her to pick up anything and for it to incubate (it was a total of 14 hours from the time we stepped on the ship until she vomited) – plus we had been so careful about washing our hands. It could have been bad food – which fit the timeline better. We had all eaten basically the same food, but I know contamination can differ greatly from one serving to the next.

I decided to see how she did the rest of the night and make a decision in the morning. If it was the Norwalk virus, she would run a fever, continue to vomit or at the least get the runs. We had Key West the next day, still in the US and not too far from home if we decided to leave. As long as we stayed in the cabin we weren’t a threat to anyone else if it was the virus. As I lay there I heard a commotion in a cabin around us (it sounded like above). It was the unmistakable sound of someone being sick (several times), people talking and then cleaning equipment (maybe a carpet cleaner?).

OK, what would you do?

dia, you could take a look at my report, and it's a lot like yours! All the way down to "do we just clean this up, or report it?"

tdk lisa - Isn't it terrible! Fortunately my DD turned out not to be sick - thank goodness. I liked your report. I'm going to post the rest on mine on the same thread (not this one) too.

You sound alot like me. I would have ran it through my head all night long also. I am dissappointed that your cabin was not immaculate. I am an obsessive cleaner and hoped Disney would be immaculately clean. Glad you DD did not have a virus just a case of "over excitement" .

I was very disappointed in the cleanliness. The small shelf in the dresser next to the closet was really dusty (more than a weeks worth). I think I'm the only one that had ever cleaned the wall tile behind the sink (where the toothpaste and soap splashes). I found a number of suspicious spots on the floor that looked like previous "spillage" - not ours because they were dried hard like glue! Yuck! When we arrived I cleaned off all the knobs, pulls, phone and table surfaces with my trusty Lysol. There was quite a bit of black dirt on my cloth. I had to rinse serveral times in the process. My family thinks I'm a nut. But I do this same process every time we check into a hotel.

I'm sure a lot depends on the steward. Our was as sweet and friendly as you could wish for, and I know they're strapped for time, but I think the cabin could have been kept cleaner.

Funny you should mention the room not being the cleanest! I mentioned the same thing when we cruised in December and I got strange looks...like I was a super clean freak or something. But when I walked into the room it smelled like urine and the toilet had a BIG stain in it...the room steward was able to scrub this out after it was pointed out...so I know it just wasn't cleaned right. We also saw a lot of "litter" strewn through out the ship and CM walking by it and ignoring it. I think Disney is slipping with their little cleaning because they are so worried about the bigger picture. JMHO

I think if you luck into a good cleaning room steward, you get clean. Ours was very nice and extremely helpful, just not a "cleaner". We did tip her a little above the recoomended because she was very friendly and kept our ice bucket full (which is important to me!) I had my can of Lysol so we were fine!;)

Oh, my! What an awful first night of the cruise for you!! I'm glad to hear your daughter didn't have the virus, but I can just imagine how concerned you were about it. You mentioned your room not being as clean as you expected, we had a little of that as well but not like you did. I first noticed hair on the bathroom floor, and knew it wasn't either of ours. :( But that evening it was gone so she must have cleaned the floor then. I imagine they can get a bit overwhelmed trying to clean all of the rooms after people depart from them, before new ones move in, and probably some require "more cleaning" than others. :) You said she kept your ice bucket full, that's one of the important things to me, too, and she didn't keep ours full as often as I would have liked. Some days she didn't bring any until 2:00 - 3:00 in the afternoon. :( We did tip her more than the recommended amount though, as we never had to wait for her to finish cleaning the room. Each morning/evening when we came back to the room she had already been in there and "done her thing." :)
Looking forward to the rest of your report. :D
