I woke up around 2AM. One of the kids was moaning Im a very light sleeper. I started to doze off again when my DD (thankfully on the bottom bunk) hurled all over. Yuck! I jumped up, woke her and pushed her towards the bathroom. She made it in there just before she blew again. Unfortunately the toilet seats on the ship like to be in a closed position. Yuck! I opened the lid (Yuck!); she blew one more time. Im standing there thinking, Is it virus? Is it bad food? Was it too much Excitement? Do I call the steward?
My DH and I decided to clean up the mess. Fortunately Im a borderline obsessive cleaner. I had laundry soap, Lysol, etc. We cleaned up all the mess and some mess that wasnt ours (I think I mentioned on day 1 the cabin wasn't as clean as I had hoped it would be). Yes, we cleaned all of it - as quietly as possible. I washed the sheets, blankets, bedspread and PJs in hot (surprisingly hot!) water and Tide with bleach. We cleaned the carpet, bathroom walls, and floor - first with hot soapy water, then with Lysol. My DS hadnt moved from the top bunk and actually fell back asleep. My DD showered. We hung the laundry in the shower and around the shower. Thank goodness I had plenty of clothespins. We all climbed into the big bed. Thank goodness we're small people. I lay there wondering what to do. At first I was really angry (too angry, but remember it was now after 3AM and I had just spent an hour in a cleaning frenzy). I was thinking how dare they let people sail on a ship that is still making people sick! We were getting off the ship ASAP and I should sue! I just knew we were all going to get sick and spend the week stuck in our cabin.
As I calmed down I started think about the timeline. Im an engineer and tend to over-analyze (you all are learning all my faults). I remembered how as I child I was often sick just from excitement (birthdays 7 through 9); my daughter had been very excited about the cruise. It didnt seem like we had been onboard long enough for her to pick up anything and for it to incubate (it was a total of 14 hours from the time we stepped on the ship until she vomited) plus we had been so careful about washing our hands. It could have been bad food which fit the timeline better. We had all eaten basically the same food, but I know contamination can differ greatly from one serving to the next.
I decided to see how she did the rest of the night and make a decision in the morning. If it was the Norwalk virus, she would run a fever, continue to vomit or at the least get the runs. We had Key West the next day, still in the US and not too far from home if we decided to leave. As long as we stayed in the cabin we werent a threat to anyone else if it was the virus. As I lay there I heard a commotion in a cabin around us (it sounded like above). It was the unmistakable sound of someone being sick (several times), people talking and then cleaning equipment (maybe a carpet cleaner?).
OK, what would you do?
