Just got to say, I LOVE Ireland! The people are always so nice, the country is beautiful in a rocky/green sort of way, there is a ton of historic culture available... I love it. Though you guys wont make it if you are on a cruise, everyone should visit the cliffs of moher, the giant's causeway, and particularly Blarney Castle someday!

Some other minor things to check out in Dublin that may be of interest to tourists are:
the Ha'penny Bridge

Just a note on this. If anyone does use the Hapenny Bridge to cross the river, please do not put a padlock on it. This has become a tourist "thing" over the last 2 years, where tourists lock a metal padlock onto bridges. The Hapenny Bridge is 200 years old this year and has survived a civil war , yet these metal locks are destroying the bridge. Our beautiful and historical bridge is NOT the place to lock a padlock!

I use the bridge on a regular basis and it just upsets me soo much to see this. Tourists think its "cute" but they have no idea it is very wrong. 200 years of history being destroyed all because of selfish tourists

I am glad you told us this. On many of the travel shows they show viewers how to make it special by placing a lock to signify your love for one another. We poor souls here in the USA are just doing what the travel shows say to do...now I WON"T!!! And I will pass this information along. Shame on those travel shows for encouraging this. We have wooden covered bridges here in the Pennsylvania Dutch country. They are fragile and when the streams flood, they are wiped out forever. Recently came upon one in Lancaster PA on our way to a birthday party and I was able to show this to my grandchildren. We drove over it and on the way home they begged to do it again! I was so surprised that they actually were interested in the history. Our Amish still ride horse and buggy over these bridges. What a wonderful world we have! I can't wait to see Ireland!

Yes please pass it on. It sounds like you will love my city, its like a living museum, some streets and buildings go right back to the original Viking settlement in the 9th century

The ashore time for Dublin is 8:15am. Do you think we could make it to the Book of Kells exhibit by 9:00am? I'm thinking I should book 10am to be safe. We want to see so much that day, getting an early start is a must! We will most likely take a taxi there.

ok, never been on a cruise, so not sure about timings. When it says ashore time what does that mean? Im not sure how long it will take you to leave the ship, get through the port arrivals and moving in a taxi. I would book 10am just in case. Some one else on the main cruise chat thread is booking 9.30am , if thats a help? Maybe you could link up and arrange transport together??

That depends on what kind of food you like and what your budget is. Some places you need to book in advance, some places you can do a walk in.

It will be two adults traveling and it has been 10 years since I was in Dublin and the first time for hubby. The best way to get from Trinity is by bus, route 40 http://www.dublinbus.ie/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/40-/
It is direct from near Trinity to Guinness Store House. Im not sure about the fare, as I use a travel card, but I would say around €2 per person per journey. I would have about €10 in €1 coins, as the bus drivers dont give change or accept notes. On the way back, get off at High Street, St. Audeon's Church stop, which is the one before Christchurch, then walk back down and over the bridge , continue onto Church Street, up the road, over the tram tracks, past St Michans Church, then turn left at Marys Lane

The boat will dock at Alexandra Dock, which is basically the end of the docklands. There is nothing much in that area, its the main Dublin port. There is a miltiplex cinema and concert venue near the port buildings, but other than that its all warehouses and docklands buildings. There is a very good tram line from the port area, which goes right to the main shopping area and city centre called Luas. https://www.luas.ie/luas-red-line-stops/ The stop nearest the port is called The Point and the city centre stop is either Abbey Street or Jervis Street
You can also get bus route 53 to the city centre from the port http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/53/
You could also get a taxi from the port to the city centre

Once in the city centre there a huge amount of things to do and see. If you give me some idea of things you might be interested in , I can help you further

You are welcome I would go direct to Grafton Street after getting off the ship and you will be at Disney Store for 9am. Thats a very good time to be there, as it can get very crowded and especially with everyone from the ship in town that day. It will take about 10 minutes approx to walk from Disney Store to Trinity College and The Book of Kells.

ok, there are two grocery stores I go to which are near The Disney Store on Grafton Street

1. Marks and Spencer Food Hall on Grafton Street. This is a UK chain and is more a high end grocery store, I go here for only certain items, the more expensive or special items.

2. Dunnes Stores Food Hall, in St Stephens Green Shopping Centre, at the top of Grafton Street. This is the regular every day grocery store, the chain which the majority of Irish people shop at. The unit in St Stephens Green Shopping Centre is just a medium sized unit as it is a city centre shop. The really big ones are located in the shopping centres in the suburbs.

Since we'll be there overnight, can you pass on the name of a favorite pub with trad music? I've heard that O'Donoghues is good, and starts the music fairly early, which sounds good to me since I normally have to get up at 4:45 am. Is the food there fairly good, or should we try to get a bite nearby before arriving there for a pint.

um not sure which pub you have been advised about as there are a number of pubs by that name. Do you have a street address as its not one I am familiar with. Connelly Station is on the north side of the city, about 15 minutes walk from Dublins main shopping and restaurant / bar areas. Its not really a nice area after dark and there are not really that nice places to eat or bars to go to in that area.

I would advise to get a taxi from where you are staying to Temple Bar area. Temple Bar area is the main tourist bar area, think Bourbon Street in New Orleans or Times Square in New York. If you want music and food Oliver St John Gogarty is the main bar in that area. Its a very tourist area, not really a locals area but its the easiest place to direct you to as you are staying over at Connelly area.
