Disney ladies...can we talk hot flashes???

I decided not to use any medication for menopause. I find both caffeine and alcohol trigger hot flashes. The best thing I have done is cut both my caffeine and liquor consumption. Also, I highly recommend that you install a ceiling fan in your bedroom if you don't already have one. We have a remote-controlled fan over our bed, and it has helped enormously with hot flashes at night. I don't have to get out of bed to turn it on!

I carry a folded fan, and drink ice water to cool down.
I need to buy a herbal cool thing........

Like others, I have found certain foods and drinks trigger my flashes; high sugar, caffeine and carbs. I cut down on those which I found helped. But, what I found to be the greatest help was when I started adding exercise to my life. I was walking 1 mile plus every other day for about 30 minutes (using my treadmill), while increasing my speed and incline over time. I know this is what helped the most because when hurricane Sandy hit, our lives changed for a long time (no electric and such), and so did my dedication to exercise. Low an behold, the hot flashes are back, strong as ever.

I have been taking evening primrose oil and could not believe how much it helped in my PMS symptoms. I had no cramping which NEVER happens. It is supposed to also help with menopause symptoms. I would definitely try it. I used the Barleans brand.

Hope this questions isn't too racy for the Disboards but any suggestions for "lady" dryness? I don't get hot flashes and am too scared to take estrogen in any form!

Has anyone had a good experience with over the counter medications/vitamins/etc....I'm burning up!

Any suggestions appreciated!

Tried *wild yam cream* at the suggestion of my SIL. Didn't do a thing for me, was just very yucky when applied.

It was HRT all the way for me - helped tremendously, and gave me back my life. No longer need it now - yippee ;)

Didn't feel like the risk outweighed the benefit and *need* for me. Was on low dosage, and GYN said it was low risk. Would definitely do it again.

*Replens* with applicator from over the counter is great - my gyn recommended it.

I must be the last person in North America that said to heck with this and did hormone replacement therapy. menopause can go on for years - everyone is different, some people have mild symptoms, some have severe (mine were severe), and I saw no good reason for being miserable for years, then I'd get hit by a bus anyway.

Me, too. Increased my dosage back in the summer because what I was on wasn't doing enough. I was completely miserable before. Life is much better now.

My Dr. Recommended OTC Remifemin. I purchase mine from Amazon after reading the reviews.

It is suppose to take two weeks to start working, but I went from absolutely miserable 5-7x a day flashes to none in less than 24 hours!:cool1:
